leaving 3K in personal estate and Elizabeth died aged 67 at Aberdelgie, Seapoint on 9 Dec 1879.
1 Samuel Semple born circa 1838 went to England and was living at 113 Lewisham High Road in
London from 1871 to 1881 with his wife Mary Jane Loxley, widow of Henry Loxley from
Berkshire whom he married on 18 Sep 1869 at St John’s Church, Lewisham in Kent.
2 Joseph Mercer Semple, youngest born circa 1841 married Elizabeth Jane Downes, daughter of
James Downes, a baker from Monkstown at the Scots Church, Kingstown on 26 Dec 1870. A
tea, wine and grocery merchant of Seapoint House, he applied for a retail wine licence in 1867
but was turned down. He was an agent for India Pale Ale (IPA) in 1880, an agent for the Irish
Times in 1886, the Daily Express in 1887 and an agent for Breadalbane Highland Whiskey in
1889. With his brother in law Alex Downes they rented out apartments on Seapoint Avenue
at Aberdelgie and Alma Road.
Joseph helped in what became known as the Seapoint Tragedy. The wife of James O’Connor,
editor of the Irish Nation, and four of their children were poisoned after eating mussels collected
from a rock pool behind their house at Seapoint Tce. Joseph went in search of doctors to help
them but he was too late, he attended their funerals at Glasnevin some days later. Joseph died
aged 51 at Seapoint House on 30 Jul 1892 with his wife in attendance and without a will. In
November that year the business premises which had living accommodation and the house were
put up for sale. Elizabeth died at Monkstown Hospital on 10 Oct 1906 and was buried at
Deansgrange.

3 Wilhelmina Victoria Louisa Semple born 12 Jul 1878 at Seapoint House. Wilhelmina was
living at 14 Sandford Avenue when she married Joseph Arthur Ince, a bookkeeper from
46 Lonsdale Street in Belfast and son of Henry Ince, a farmer on 28 Sep 1904 at Sandford
Parish Church. They moved to Belfast where Joseph worked as a commercial traveller
and grocer.

4 Samuel Semple born 1 Jan 1880 at Seapoint House joined the Royal Navy and was a chief
petty officer based in England and the eldest son when he married Susan Lydia Jolley at
Carlow Methodist Church on 10 Nov 1906. Susan a laundress, living in Carlow and
youngest daughter of Daniel Jolly, a laundry owner from Williams Terrace, Stillorgan. The
Jolly family had moved to Dublin Road, Carlow after the death of their father. In 1911 the
Semple family were living in Longford.

5 Frederick Joseph Semple born 6 May 1881 at Seapoint House died at Seapoint House on
26 Jun 1884 from Scarlatina and was buried at Deansgrange.
6 Charles Windsor Semple born 21 Jul 1882 died 24 Jun 1884 from Scarlatina and was buried
at Deansgrange.
7 Infant son died 3 Jan 1885 and was buried at Deansgrange.
8 Arthur Jackson Semple (a twin) born 30 Nov 1886 died 17 Jan 1887 and was buried at
Deansgrange.
9 William Ronald Semple youngest son, born 30 Nov 1886 at Seapoint House joined the army
and was with the Army Services Corps. He married Ada Hatchell, a domestic servant living
at Hungerford Lodge, South Hill Avenue, Blackrock and daughter of John Hatchell, a
coachman at SS Philip and James on 6 Sep 1916. He was a retired nursing orderly and died
late of 6 Georges Place, Blackrock at St Columcille's Hospital on 26 Jun 1958 at was buried at
Deansgrange. Ada died aged 91 at 6 Georges Place, Blackrock aged 91 on 10 Jan 1976. (Also
buried in the grave is Georgina Keady, sister of Ada).
10 Josephine Elizabeth Semple born 7 May 1873 at Seapoint House. She was living at 27
Chelmsford Park, Ranelagh and married John Jolly, son of Samuel Jolly a farmer of Merville
Stillorgan on 25 Apr 1894 at Leeson Park. They moved to Newtown Park and John farmed
and was a Dairy proprietor.

3 Rebecca Semple born circa 1846 in County Dublin married James David Newel of Blackrock and son
of James Newel of Newtownmountkennedy at Monkstown Church on 11 Jul 1872. James worked for
a wine merchant and then moved to Newtownmountkennedy, Co Wicklow where he took over his
father’s grocery business. He in turn passed the business to his son to run, and became a farmer.
Rebecca died 14 Nov 1903 aged 57 and James died 1 May 1937 aged 62.
