Roe family of Wexford and Kilkenny
Peter Roe married Mary Hester Gowan
Peter Roe, son of Peter Roe of Co Wexford secondly married Mary Hester Gowan. Mary
was the daughter of Hunter Gowan of Mount Nebo (later Mount St Benedict) in Co
Wexford.
1 Henry Roe eldest son born circa 1745 was a physician of Gorey. He married Ann
Woodroofe in 1877. Ann was the daughter of Richard Woodroofe of Gorey. They
fled to Dublin after the insurgence of 1798 when their house and furniture was
burned down. Henry continued to practice in Dublin at Aungier Street and died
26 May 1815 and was buried in St Peter’s Parish. Ann died in 1830.
1 Peter Roe born 11 Mar 1778 at Gorey entered Trinity in 1793. He joined
the Trinity Yeomanry in 1797. He lived with his uncle Peter Roe at
Fitzwilliam Square whilst attending college. He took Holy orders and was
ordained to the curacy of Kilkenny in 1798 on the nomination of Rev
Edward Pidgeon and ordained priest in 1799. He became incumbent of
St Mary’s Kilkenny seven years later and remained there until his death.
He is credited with initiating the evangelical revival in the Church of
Ireland in the early 19th century and was an early supporter of the
Hibernian Bible Society and the Hibernian Church Missionary Society. He
married Mary Anne Gore in February 1806. Mary Anne was the daughter
of Arthur Gore of Kilkenny. Peter died in Kingstown 23 Apr 1841 and was
buried at St Mary’s, Kilkenny. Mary Anne died 24 Aug 1851 at Tivoli Place,
Kingstown aged 64 and was buried with her husband.
1 Mary Anne Roe born circa 1808 died in the Abergele Train Crash
on 20 Aug 1868.
2 Margaret Roe born circa 1812 died 28 Feb 1825 and was buried at
St Mary’s, Kilkenny.
2 Martha Roe eldest surviving daughter died in August 1855 at Harcourt Street.
