Denis Redmond born circa 1811 was pawnbroker of George Street and 44 Dawson Street. He
married Bridget Emily (Emily) Gorman on 24 Jan 1840 at St Nicholas RC Church and they
moved to Belmont Lodge, Sandford Road. Emily was the daughter of Patrick and Julia Gorman
of Wexford Street, publicans. They had twelve children of whom six survived in 1911. Emily’s
brother James, a publican of Winetavern Street and Delgany died in 1884. He left 124K which
after charitable bequests of 45K, the balance was divided between his Redmond nieces and
nephews. Denis died 4 Feb 1878 at Belmont Lodge, Sandford Road. He was buried at
Goldenbridge and left 8K in personal estate, his widow his executrix. Emily died 9 Mar 1912
at 126 Sandford Road and left 11K in personal estate.
1 Lawrence Redmond eldest born circa 1841 died at Sandford Road on 18 Aug 1854 and
was buried at Goldenbridge.
2 James Redmond born circa 1844. He was a Jesuit priest and teacher at Clongowes. He
served as vice-president of University College Dublin and subsequently as minister
and superior of the Jesuit community at Leeson Street. He died on 7 Feb 1914 and
was buried at Glasnevin.
3 Denis Daniel Redmond born circa 1847 was an oculist and a fellow of the RCSI with
a practice at 14 Harcourt Street. He died a bachelor at 126 Sandford Road on
11 Aug 1892, his brother Laurence the informant.
4 John Patrick Redmond born 1849 baptised at Haddington Road Church. He lived
with his uncle James Gorman and inherited the property at St James’s Park, Delgany
in 1885.
5 Joseph Michael Redmond baptised at Haddington Road 23 Jul 1851.
6 Laurence Redmond born circa 1852 was a jeweller, pawnbroker and clothier of
Gardiner Street. He died a bachelor at 126 Sandford Road on 14 Aug 1943 and was
buried at Goldenbridge.
7 Maria Rose (Rose) Redmond baptised at Haddington Road on 27 May 1853 died
unmarried on 24 May 1933 and was buried at Goldenbridge.
8 L Charles Redmond baptised at Haddington Road on 31 Mar 1855.
9 Charles Redmond baptised 27 Apr 1857 at Haddington Road died 26 Dec 1858 at
Sandford Road and was buried at Goldenbridge.
10 Joseph Michael Redmond born circa 1858. He was educated at what is now
Belvedere College, the Catholic University Medical School, and the Carmichael
School. He trained at Jervis Street, Baggot Street, Meath and Mater Misericordiae
hospital. He was a licentiate of the RCSI in 1876 and midwifery in 1878. He was a
member in 1881, a fellow in 1884 and also studied in London & Brussels. He was
twice elected president of the RCSI. He was resident at Merrion Square and married
Elizabeth Oswaldina Hegarty on 31 Aug 1898 at St Andrews’ Westland Row.
Oswaldina born in Liverpool on 4 Aug 1856 was the widow of Maurice Hegarty
whom she married in 1878. She was the daughter of James Nelson, a merchant of
Battstown, Co Westmeath and Elizabeth McCormick. Her father was founder of
Nelson Line shipping and a co- founder of the Argentina Meat Company. On her
marriage to Joseph she put the Delvin, Westmeath property up for sale. She was a
member of the Women’s National Health Association from its foundation in 1907.
Joseph was knighted in 1911 and in 1913 he was made a Knight Commander of the
Order of St Sepulchre by the Pope. Their town residence was 41 Merrion square
and circa 1906 Joseph purchased Gortmore but may not have moved in straight
away as around then they took many trips to London and the continent taking
Oswald with them. Oswaldina was elected a member of RHS in 1909 and she was
on the managing committee of the Dublin Castle Red Cross Hospital. As a couple
they had no issue but they had numerous friends and Oswaldina kept toy spaniels.
They hosted garden parties, fetes and at homes regularly, with her son and her
Nelson nieces helping out. In 1917 Oswaldina’s car was involved in the accident that
killed Dr Usher, MD Of Dundrum. In 1920 Oswaldina became one of the four
women magistrates appointed after the Sex Disqualification Act 1919 was enacted
along with Lady Emily Arnott, Margaret Dockrell and Elizabeth Pallas.
Joseph died 25 Nov 1921 at his residence at 41 Merrion Sq., Dublin. His funeral
mass was held at St Andrew’s, Westland Row and he was buried in Glasnevin
cemetery. After Joseph’s death Oswaldina moved to St Anne’s in Clonskeagh. She
died on 1 Mar 1941 at her house in Clonskeagh. Her funeral mass was held at the
Church of the Sacred Heart in Donnybrook and she was buried at Glasnevin.
1a Thomas Lawrence Oswald (Oswald) Hegarty born 1882 at Stony Croft,
Liverpool son of Maurice Hegarty and Oswaldina Nelson. He was educated
at Clongowes and Trinity and was brought up at 41 Merrion Square and
Gortmore. He was called to the Irish Bar in 1911. He married Eileen O’Neill
at St Andrew’s, Westland Row on 18 Feb 1914. Eileen was the elder daughter
of Joseph O’Neill of Kinsealy Hall, Malahide. They had their reception in the
Hibernian Hotel and honeymooned in Paris. They were very sociable and
attended many functions with Lady Redmond. They lived at Nutley Park.
Oswald died on 10 Jan 1950. His funeral mass was held at Donnybrook
Church and he was buried at Glasnevin. Eileen died at the Richmond Hospital
late of Nutley Park on 5 Sep 1967. Her funeral mass was held at Our Lady
Queen of Peace, Merrion and was buried with her husband.
1 Maurice Joseph Nelson Hegarty born 11 Dec 1914 at Herbert Street
was a doctor and the assistant medical office for CIE in 1947.
2 Elizabeth Mary Oswaldina (Betty) Hegarty only daughter born
26 Jan 1918 at Herbert Street married Reginald J Leonard on
23 Apr 1941 at Donnybrook Church. Reginald was an architect the
son of Patrick Leonard of St Kevin’s, Dartry.
11 Elizabeth (Bessie) Redmond born circa 1861 died unmarried 26 Feb 1954 at 126
Sandford Road and was buried at Goldenbridge.
12 Francis Redmond born 1862 emigrated in 1888 and died in Manhattan, New York on
8 Apr 1906.
