Fitzgerald-Arnott Family of Ardmore, Stillorgan and Dunardagh, Blackrock
John Arnott born 26 Jul 1814 at Auchtermuchty, Fife, Scotland, the son of John Arnott and Elizabeth
Paton. His first business failed but by 1852, he was a partner in the successful Arnott Cannock & Co
in Cork. He married Margaret Jane (Mary) McKinlay on 20 Jan 1852 at Lansdowns Crescent, Glasgow.
Mary was the daughter of John McKinley, solicitor of Sterling. On the day he married, he gifted £100
to Cork charities, a gift that he frequently repeated. He held the office of Mayor of Cork between
1859 and 1861 and was MP for Kinsale between 1859 and 1863 and JP for Cork. He was Knighted in
1859. He had a number of ships including The Sapphire which went down on her maiden voyage in
1860. His brother in law John McKinlay was onboard but none of the crew or passengers were found.
Mary died in July 1866. He was an entrepreneur and founder of the Arnott's department chain. He
acquired the Irish Times and The Northern Whig newspapers.
1 Rosina Arnott born circa 1852 married Captain William Johnson on 30 Oct 1872 at St Fin Barr's
Cathedral and died 25 Dec 1926.
2 John Alexander Arnott born 16 Nov 1853 at Villa Nova, Cork became the 2nd Baronet on the
death of his father. He married Caroline Sydney Williams, eldest daughter of Sir Frederick
Martin Williams, MP, of Tregullow, Cornwall at St Paul's Church, Clifton, Bristol on 27 Sep 1881.
The family lived at Woodlands, Cork, and 12 Merrion Square, Dublin. John died in 1940.
3 David Taylor Arnott born 1855 married Ethel Marion Napier Bell, daughter of Captain Frederic
John Bell, in 1890. Ethel died from Typhoid on 21 Nov 1893 aged 30 at St John's Wood. He was
London Correspondent for the Irish Times and secondly married Blanche Emma Girdwood,
daughter of John Girdwood, on 11 Dec 1895 at Christ Church, Lancaster Gate. He died on
22 Jul 1915 aged 60 on the Isle of Wight.
4 Mangerton William Arnott born 1856 married Eliza Mary Arnott, daughter of Thomas Arnott, on
10 Nov 1886. He died at Youghal on 16 Dec 1901 aged 45.
5 Margaret Jane Arnott born 1859 married Lieutenant Francis Augustus St Maur Shiel on
28 Sep 1880 at St Luke's Church, Cork. She secondly married Major Harry Wetherell Rowden,
son of Edward Wetherell Rowden and Mary Ann Cooper on 6 Aug 1892. She died on
5 August 1936 aged 77.
Sir John secondly married Emily Jane Fitzgerald, third daughter of Reverend Edward Loftus Fitzgerald on
7 Nov 1872 at St Mary's Church, Youghal. John became 1st Baronet Arnott of Woodlands, Shandon, Cork
in 1896 and died at Woodlands, Shandon on 28 Mar 1898 aged 83. Emily assumed by royal licence the
additional of Fitzgerald in 1902. Lady Emily and her family were living in Ardmore (UCD) in 1901/2
before moving to Dunardagh circa 1903. Lady Arnott became one of the first JP's in Ireland in 1920, together
with Elizabeth Palles, Lady (Margaret) Dockrell, and Lady (Oswaldina) Redmond of Gortmore. Emily died
2 Oct 1938 aged 85 at The Strand, Youghal and was interred in the family vault at Douglas Church with her
husband.
6 Captain Loftus Percival Arnott born 07.11.1873 at Woodlands of the 3rd Battalion, Leinster
Regiment. Lofus died unmarried on 02.12.1956 aged 83 years at 53 Sydney Parade Avenue,
Ballsbridge.
7 Emmeline Louisa Arnott born 27.10.1874 at Woodlands, Upper Glanmire married Captain
Godfrey Herbert Bloomfield of New Park, Waterford son of Fitzmaurice Gustavus Bloomfield
on 16.09.1896 at St Luke’s Parish Church. New Park House was destroyed by fire in 1932
and Godfrey went to live at Ballymena. Godfrey died on 21.11.1946 of Lisnafillon House,
Gracehill, Antrim and Emmeline died on 10.08.1966 and is buried at the Abbey Kilculliheen,
Ferrybank, Waterford.
1 Captain Fitzmaurice John Commerell Bloomfield born 04.09.1897 at Newpark House.
In 1938 Fitzmaurice survived crashing a Miles Hawk 2 seater plane near Exeter and
ended up in an Exeter nursing home encased in plaster.

3 Kathleen Lily Ives Bloomfield born 22.03.1901 at Newpark House.
4 Dorothy Sophia Caldwell Bloomfield born 25.07.1903 at Newpark House.
8 Jessie Alexandra Arnott born 09.10.1875 at Woodlands married Lieutenant General Sir
William Pulteney son of Rev Richard Thomas Pulteney on 17.10.1917 at the Church of the
Annunciation in the Parish of St Marylebone, London. William died on 14.05.1941 at Pines
Hill, Stanstead and Jessie died 16.01.1971 of Ivy Hall Nursing Home, Crowborough.
9 Lily Eleanor Arnott born 02.02.1878 at Woodlands married Arthur Edward Rogers son of Lt
Col John Thornton Rogers of Queenstown son of John Thornton Rogers on 12.08.1902 at St
Luke’s Parish Church. In 1911 the family were living at Patrickswell, Tipperary. Arthur died
on 01.01.1950 and Lily died on 12.12.1967 aged 89 years both of Angle House, Seal,
Wildernesse, Sevenoaks, Kent.

10 Florence Geraldine Arnott born 05.08.1879 at Woodlands married Major Henry Herbert
Ronald White of the 60th Rifles son of Major General Henry George White on 24.06.1906 at
All Saints Church, Knightsbridge. Henry died on 12.03.1939 at 6500 Yucca Street, Los Angeles,
USA late of 10 Bury Street, St James, London. Florence died on 26.07.1958 of Cronkbane, 20
Somerset Road, Douglas, Isle of Man.
1 John Maxwell White born 12.07.1909 at Lougheske.
11 Lieutenant Cecil John Maxwell Arnott born 04.08.1882 at Woodlands of the 3rd Battlion,
Leinster Regiment. Cecil died unmarried on 31.08.1954 aged 72 years of the Cottage,
Clonsilla. Dublin.
12 Mary Louisa Mabel Arnott youngest daughter born 05.05.1886 at Woodlands married Captain
Sir Francis Hugh Brooke 2nd Bart son of George Frederick Brooke on 05.05.1915 at St
George’s Church, Hanover Square, London. Sir Francis died on 04.11.1954 aged 71 years
and Lady Mary died on 12.02.1982 both of Pickering Forest, Celbridge, Kildare.

Dunardagh, Blackrock.
