William son of William trained as a miller with Samuel Kidd in London. He took over the mill with
his brother Richard in 1874 and operated as W P & R Odlum in Maryborough. He married Emma
Harriett Poole, daughter of William Podger on 29 Nov 1881 at All Souls Church, Langham. They had
seven children and lived at The Elms in Portarlington, then Ashfield before settling at Huntington,
Portarlington. Their Dublin Residence was 37 Kildare Street. William died 23 Nov 1922 at Huntington.
Emma died 27 Sep 1939 at Togher House, Monasterevan. Probate was in London and she left 11K.
1 Mirabel Eileen Odlum born in September 1882 at Portarlington married the Very Rev George
Frederick Graham, son of Reverend George Richards Graham and Emily Mary Page on
21 Apr 1904. Mirabel died at De Vesci Terrace, Dun Laoghaire on 18 Jun 1971.
2 William Claude Odlum born 1884 attended Charterhouse school and trained as a miller at Naas
mills. He married Doris Barnet in Birmingham Cathedral in 1913. He was also a Director the
Bank of Ireland and of the Grand Canal Company.
3 Algernon Ashley Odlum born 1 Jan 1886 at Portarlington attended Charterhouse school and
joined the family business in 1902. He married Dorothy Chippie Eadie, daughter of Albert Eadie
of Rigby Hall, Bromsgrove at Bromsgrove Parish Church in January 1912. The couple lived in
Kilnacourt, Portarlington. Algernon was a director of the Irish Wallboard Company and of
Comhlucht Siuicre Eireann Teo. Algernon died 6 May 1953 at Mountmellick.
1 Peter Desmond Odlum born 24 Aug 1914 at Portarlington. He was a director of the Dublin
Port Milling company in 1948 and retired in 1966. He was a president of the Irish Flour
Millers Association and was commodore of the Royal Irish Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire.
He was a parishioner of St Brigid’s in Stillorgan and moved to Priory Lodge in 1962. The
renovation of Stillorgan Rectory in 1986 was largely due his generosity.
2 Joan 'Bunty'* Odlum born 16 Jun 1917 at Portarlington married John Seton Pringle at St
Paul's Church Portarlington on 7 Sep 1938. John was the son of James Alexander
Pringle. Bunty died on 27 Jan 1950 at the Royal City of Dublin Hospital.
4 Violet Irene Odlum born 31 Aug 1888 at Portarlington married Frederick Falkiner Standish
Smithwick, Chaplin to HM Forces and son of Standish Porle Smithwick, chancellor of Kildare
Cathedral and Caroline Anna Grant Webb on 16 Sep 1908 at St Anne’s Church Dublin. Fred was
an international rugby player and won two caps for Ireland in 1898. The couple had four children.
Violet died 10 Jan 1922 at 30 Leeson Street. Fred secondly married Adelaide Florence Millar,
daughter of Fitzadam Millar, of Monkstown in October 1923. Fred died in 1962.

2 Patricia Adelaide Smithwick, second daughter married William James Sherlock of Caterham,
Surrey in June 1936 at St Mary’s parish church, Nenagh.
3 John Standish de Chair Smithwick born 28 Sep 1915 joined the army and attained the rank
of Major.
5 Flora Gwendoline Odlum born 27 Oct 1889 at Portarlington.
6 Sybil Gertrude Odlum born 19 Nov 1893 attended the French School in Bray and Trinity and
became a medical doctor. She married Gerald Richard Vivian Panton in 1919 and they lived
Hawkstone House. Fareham, Hampshire.
7 Muriel Vere Odlum born circa 21 Nov 1895 attended the French School in Bray and Trinity and
became a medical doctor. She married Ninian Falkiner, MD of Greenogue, Terenure and son of
Henry Baldwin Falkiner, solicitor on 5 Jan 1924 at the Parish church of Lea, Mountmellick. They
lived at Hollyville on Newtownpark Avenue and Ninian would go on to be The Master of the
Rotunda.
