Adam Millar married Rebecca Chaytor only daughter of William and Mary Chaytor of Clonmel
at Clonmel in July 1838. Her father was Mayor of Clonmel from 1816 to 1833.
1 James Macgregor Millar born 27 Sep 1840 of the firm of Adam Miller & Company, Thomas
Street, lived at Weston, Alma Road Monkstown. He was a member of the University Rowing
Club and it's hon sec for 26 years. He died a bachelor on 30 Apr 1891 while out for a walk on
the Carlisle Pier in Kingstown and was buried at Deansgrange.
2 William Millar, second son born circa 1842 married Mary Alica Geraldine de Courcey, eldest
daughter of Michael William de Courcy at St Stephens by Saltash, Cornwall on 4 Mar 1874.
3 Richard Chaytor Millar third son, born circa 1845 of Adam Millar, tea, wine and spirit
merchant of Thomas Street and Queen’s Park, Monkstown was born circa 1844. He
married Matilda Geraldine Orr, eldest daughter of Alexander Smith Orr and Mary Perrin
and granddaughter of the Rev Mark Perrin on 5 Aug 1873 at the SS Philip & James,
Booterstown. Matilda was a campaigner to petition Trinity to educate women. She also
organised fetes in the grounds of Brooklawn in aid of the Orthopaedic Hospital in
Brunswick Street and was president of the Booterstown branch to run the Gigas Bazaar
in aid of the Royal Hospital Donnybrook. Richard was an architect and civil engineer. In
1869 he registered and patented a portable instrument which he called an Apomecometer
which measured the height of a building or tower. Richard practised on his own until
1874 and then entered into partnership with William J Symes to form the firm of Millar &
Symes. Together they would design many iconic and innovative buildings including the
Central Hotel in Exchequer Street and the Irish Stock Exchange in Anglesea Street. He was
also a director of A Millar and Company. The family moved from Brooklawn to Ervillagh
in Foxrock in 1904. Richard died on 23 Mar 1915 aged 70 years at 33 Marlboro Road and
Matilda died on 1 Jan 1920 aged 76 years at 27 Pembroke Park.
1 Adam Gerald Chaytor (Jack) Millar born 14 Apr 1874 at Gracefield, Waltham Terrace.
An architect, he served his apprenticeship to his father and then worked for the
practice of Richard Caulfield Orpen. He married Margaret Helena Knaggs, daughter
of Samuel Knaggs of Newtown Avenue, Blackrock at SS Philip & James on 16 Mar 1898.
He took over his father’s business and became a fellow of the RIAI in 1914 and served
on the council of the RIAI until 1927. He succeeded his father as architect to the Bank
of Ireland in 1907. Due to the pressure of work for the bank, he became their
employee, leaving his sons in charge of the Millar and Symes practice and retired in
1943. He designed the memorial fountain in Herbert park and also the Thwaites
building on O'Connell Street (now Carrolls Gifts). He was on the committee of the
Dublin Georgian Society Records and was a keen sketcher and water colourist. He was
a founder member of the Dublin Swimming Club. Adam died on 18 Nov 1957 at 4
Temple Gardens, Rathmines aged 83 and was buried at Mount Jerome.

married Dorothy Elizabeth Mary Westropp, daughter of Dr Dudley
Westropp of 10 St James's Terrace, Clonskeagh at St Mary’s Donnybrook
on 17 Jul 1935.
2 Herbert Vivian (Toby) Millar born 5 Feb 1902 married Joyce Margaret
Dunlop at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Booterstown on 6 Sep 1934.
He succeeded his father as architect to the Bank of Ireland in 1943
designing strong rooms and vaults. He was also architect to the Royal
Zoological Society. Herbert died suddenly at his residence Aylesbury,
Adelaide Road, Glenageary on 29 Jun 1958 survived by his wife and five
daughters.

4 Ruth Violet Helen Millar born 19 Dec 1907 at Ivanhoe, Sandford married
Ernest Albert Barrett on 1 Aug 1933 at Christchurch, Leeson Street.
2 MacGregor Millar born 15 May 1876 at Gracefield, Waltham Terrace died on
24 Aug 1876 aged 3 months and was buried at St Brigid’s, Stillorgan.
3 Louis du Puget Millar born 26 Jul 1877 at 3 Eaton Place, Seapoint. He studied
engineering at Trinity College, Dublin graduating in 1899. He served his
apprenticeship at his father’s practice. He married Ethel Annie Lett, daughter
of Lett Sealy Lett, of Cairn Hill Foxrock at Kill Church on 21 Mar 1906. They
moved to California in 1907 where he worked as an architect for Austin Murphy
& Co of Passadena and was drafted in 1918. They returned for a short holiday
in 1919. Louis died 24 Feb 1944 at Kern, Bakersville, California survived by his
only daughter Margaret du Puget Walker who was living in Newcastle.
4 Cecil Roy Orr born 13 Dec 1878 at 3 Eaton Place, Monkstown. He joined the Royal
Army Medical Corps and married Marjorie Adelaide Eileen Nixon, only daughter of
the late Surgeon-Major George Nixon and his wife Adelaide at Ferozepore India in
February 1907. They were based in Sierra Leone, West Africa in 1911. Colonel Miller
died 15 Jul 1958 at Cornwall.
5 Charles Herbert Millar born 15 Feb 1880 at 3 Eaton Place, Seapoint was an electrical
engineer. He registered a patent for 'Millars Rotary Engine' in 1904. He died a
bachelor at Cork on 5 Jan 1948.
6 Mary Geraldine (Donnie) Millar born 24 Apr 1882 at Brooklawn married Robert
Galloway Louis Leonard, barrister at law and son of Hugh Leonard, late of the
Geological Survey on 29 Sep 1904 at SS Philip & James, Booterstown. They were
living at 27 Pembroke Park in 1911.
7 Margaret Isabel (Marjorie) Millar, second daughter born 22 Aug 1884 at Brooklawn,
Merrion Avenue married Alexander Littlewood Fox, a maltster and son of W J A Fox,
a wine merchant at Kill parish church on 31 Jul 1909. They were living at Rathangan,
Kildare in 1911.
8 Edward Sydney Millar born 28 Jan 1886 at Brooklawn married Monica Josephine
Lawless, daughter of Major William Hampden Evans Lawless and Lucy Alethea
Grey, on 15 Dec 1917 at Aldershot, Hampshire, England. Captain Millar died on
13 Jun 1953 aged 67 at the Military Hospital, Voortrekkerhoogte, Pretoria,
Transvaal, South Africa. Monica died in December 1981 aged 88 at Durban,
Natal, South Africa.
9 Dorothy Kathleen Millar born 3 Aug 1890 at Brooklawn and was living at 27 Pembroke
Park when she joined the Redcross to work as a VAD in 1916. She worked at the
Military hospital in Sheffield before going to France in 1917 and was still serving in
1919.
4 Margaret Isabel Millar born circa 1848 died 5 Jul 1884 at Queens Park, Monkstown aged 36
from Scarlatina.
5 Fitzadam Millar born circa 1850 married Georgina Westby on 3 Jun 1875 and they had
ten children. A wine merchant he died 3 Sep 1923 at Stranmore, Temple Road Blackrock
and was buried at Deansgrange.
