John Mayne born circa 1773 of Latton, county Monaghan third son of Edward and Helen
Mayne. He was a captain in the 9th Dragoons. He married Theodosia Colburn on
20 Jan 1800 at St Peters. Theodosia was the only child of John Colburn of Dublin. They
had five children of whom two died as infants. Theodosia died at Violet Hall, Bray in
January 1810.
1 Maria Catherine Colbourn Mayne eldest daughter born circa 1795. She married
Thomas Edward Beatty Esq an MD, and widower on 12 Sep 1827 at St Anne’s
Church, Dublin. Thomas was the son of John Beatty, MD, and Mary Betagh and
was a founder member of the Royal City of Dublin Hospital, Baggot Street. Thomas
died 3 May 1872 at 62 Lower Mount Street, Dublin, the home of his nephew Dr
John Guinness Beatty. Maria died on 15 Nov at 6 Laira Terrace, Plymouth and
was buried at Plympton St Maurice, Devon. No issue found.
2 Edward Colborn Mayne eldest son born circa 1801 in Galway married Elizabeth
Bolton on 14 Apr 1828 at St Peter’s Church, Dublin. He was a captain with the
95th Regiment of Foot and Elizabeth was the daughter of John Bolton of Maine,
Co Louth. They had at least six children. He emigrated to Australia in 1836. He
lost his pastoral licence in 1846 and returned to Ireland where he died
18 May 1850.
1 Charles Edward Mayne youngest son married Charlotte Emily Henrietta
Sweetman on 27 Mar 1862 at St Mary’s, Bryanston Square. Charlotte
was the daughter of William A Sweetman of Brook Villa, Herefordshire.
2 Mary Sidney Mayne second daughter married John Joseph Knox Fletcher
on 14 Jun 1855 at Taney Church. Mary was living at Runnymede and John
was the son of Joseph John Fletcher and was vicar at Killiskey, Co Wicklow.
3 William Colburn Mayne born 22 Jul 1808 in Dublin. He was educated at
Feinaiglien School, graduated Trinity College, Dublin. He was gazetted ensign in
the fifth Northumberland Regiment (Northumberland Fusiliers). He then
attended Sandhurst Royal Military College and received a captaincy. He married
Mary Ellen Turner in 1831 and they had at least five children. He retired from the
army in 1838 and emigrated to Australia. He rented the Tongabbie estate, near
Parramatta. He was appointed Crown Lands Commissioner for the district of
Wellington in 1846 and later Inspector-General of Police for the colony. He was
appointed Auditor-General for the colony in 1856 and was first Agent-General for
New South Wales in London from 1864 to 1871. In 1867 he went to France as
chief of the New South Wales Commission for the Paris Exhibition. William died
on 31 Aug 1902 at Viewbank, Cheltenham-road, Burwood, Australia.
John secondly married his cousin Dorothea Mayne on 29 May 1813 in Dublin. Dorothea
was the daughter the Hon Justice Edward Mayne and Sarah Fiddes. Dorothea’s father
was one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas and later removed to The Court of
the King's Bench. They lived at Platanus, Sussex Road (opposite Mespil House) from 1821
to 1835 and were at Runnymede by 1843. They had at least 5 children. Dorothea died
at Runnymede on 4 Oct 1851. John died at Runnymede on 9 Mar 1855. After his death
his vast collection of silver of put up for sale.
4 Dawson Mayne born 26 Jan 1817 at the residence of his grandfather in Stillorgan.
He attended Trinity College was appointed to the HEIC Civil Service and later a
judge of the Zillah Court. He married his cousin Sarah Kate Mayne at St Peter’s
Church, Dublin in July 1853. Sarah was the youngest daughter of John Mayne,
barrister and his wife Anna. He died from dysentery on 23 Nov 1858 at
Tuticorien, Presidency of Madras. Sarah died 28 Feb 1882 at 40 Elgin Road, the
residence of her brother Edward Graves Mayne. No issue found. Sarah was
buried at Mount Jerome.
5 Helen Mayne born circa 1819 died a spinster at Bellevue, Bray 26 Jan 1880 late of
Brookville, Monkstown. She left 6K in personal estate.
6 Robert Mayne born circa 1821 baptised at St Peter’s Dublin joined the Madras
Native Infantry in 1841. He married Elizabeth Maunsell on 10 Jun 1851 at Taney
Church. Elizabeth was the daughter of Robert Maunsell of Merrion Square and
Ballawley Park, Taney and his wife Anne Lloyd. They had three children born in
India. Elizabeth died circa 1879. He died a widower on 1 Jan 1905 at Vellore,
Madras.
7 John Colburn Mayne born 22 Dec 1825 attended Grace Hill Academy, Ballymena.
He was a cadet in the Madras cavalry in 1843. He died a bachelor on
12 Sep 1859 in India. He left his estate in Co Fermanagh to his brother Dawson
and sister Dorothea.
8 Dorothea Elizabeth Mayne youngest daughter born circa 1829 married widower,
Charles Gustavus Walsh on 31 Dec 1862 at Monkstown Church. Charles was a
Colonel (retired) HM’s Indian Forces and the son of John Walsh of Dundrum Castle.
They lived at the Manor House in Dundrum and had two children. Charles died
2 Nov 1866 aged 56 at Dundrum and Dorothea died 21 Jan 1898.
