John Walsh of Dundrum Castle was a timber merchant with premises at Sir John
Rogerson’s Quay. He married Sarah Hayes in 1792. He was also the Prussian Consul from
1826 to 1834 and a director of the Dublin & London Steam Ship Company. John died
15 May 1843 at Dundrum Castle and Sarah died 22 Dec 1846 at the same place.
1 Mary Walsh born circa 1795 died a spinster on 29 May at 29 Raglan Road.
2 John Walsh born circa 1809. He and his brother Henry took over their father’s
business but were bankrupt in 1848. He was later a Lloyds agent and receiver
of the droits of admiralty. He was the owner of the paddle steamer tugs
Lioness and challenge which he put up for sale in 1876. He lived at Dundrum
Castle and also had a house at 89 Harcourt Street. He employed the architect
William Fogarty in the 1860’s to make alterations to the castle. He bought 43
acres of land in Dundrum, the estate of the Rev Joseph Carson in 1877. He was
a member of the RHS from 1863 and the RDS from 1878. He was a church
warden in Taney in 1876 and treasurer to the appeal fund for the Adelaide
Hospital in 1878. He died a bachelor on 1 Jun 1881 at Dundrum Castle and left
3K in personal estate.
3 Charles Gustavus second son baptised 6 Apr 1810 at St Catherine’s, Dublin. He
was educated at the Feinaigle School and graduated Trinity. In 1827 he joined the
Indian Army, 14th Native Infantry and attained the rank of Major. He married
Annamaria Sarah Winter at Booterstown Church on 10 Sep 1850. Anna was the
daughter of Samuel Pratt Winter of Waltham Terrace and his wife Frances Rosa
Bomford. He was present at the battle of Ferozeshah where he was wounded and
had a horse shot under him. He was with Jung Bahadoor in command of the
Gurkhas as the siege and capture of Lucknow and subsequently served in China
where he commanded the Sikhs Regiment. When the English and French proceeded
to Peking he remained in command of the troops in Shanghai. Annamaria died at
Prospect House, Milltown on 16 Jan 1857. Charles retired and was gazetted Colonel
in 1862. He moved to Manor House, Dundrum in 1865 where he died in 1866.
1 Mary Elizabeth Albert Walsh born 19 Oct 1851 at Dinapore, India. Mary was
a spinster living in Edinburgh in 1901.
2 Louisa Henrietta Walsh born 30 Oct 1852 at Dinapore, Bengal. She married
John William Sutherland on 21 Apr 1881 at Booterstown Church. John was
resident at Springfield, Dalkey and the son of George Sutherland. Louisa
was resident at Dundrum Castle. Louisa died a widow in April 1934 at
Yapton, Sussex and was survived by five daughters.
3 Anabella Charles (Ella) Walsh third daughter born 5 Oct 1855 married John
Henry Courtney Clarke on 2 Jul 1878 at Taney Church. John was with the 7th
Royal Fusiliers and the son of Courtney Kenny Clarke late of Larch Hill.
Anabella was resident at Dundrum. John later took Holy orders and was
appointed vicar at Tamworth in 1896. John died in 1925 survived by a
widow and seven children.
Charles secondly married Dorothea Elizabeth Mayne youngest daughter of John
Mayne on 31 Dec 1862 at Monkstown Church. They lived at Manor House in
Dundrum and had two children. Charles died 2 Nov 1866 aged 56 at Dundrum and
Dorothea died 21 Jan 1898.
4 Dorothea Helen Mayne Walsh born 5 Leeson Park on 10 Nov 1863. She was
living with her brother John in Berkshire in 1921. Dorothea died a spinster
on 13 Apr 1942 at Sidmouth.
5 John Gustavus Russell Walsh born 5 Dec 1865 at Manor House, Dundrum
attended Sandhurst. He married Frances May Norcott from Doneraile in
Cork at St Bartholemew’s Church on 11 Jun 1874. Frances was the daughter
of Arthur Norcott. He was with the second Battalion, Royal Berkshire
Regiment, Meerut, India in 1911. He was a retired lieutenant Colonel in
1921 living at Hampstead, Lottage, Aldbourne, Berkshire. He died in Devon
in 1944.
4 Frederick William Walsh third son born 1 Oct 1811. He was educated at Trinity and
called to the Irish Bar in 1836. He married Annie Livesay on 18 Oct 1845 at Ballinrobe.
Annie was seventeen years his junior and the daughter of Edward Livesay of
Cosslough. Frederick took silk in 1855 and was a bencher of the King’s Inns in 1871.
He was Hon Sec to the Adelaide Hospital from 1857 to 1879. He was appointed Judge
of the Court of Bankruptcy in 1875 and lived at Dundrum Castle from 1879. He died
on 8 Aug 1885 at 279 Camden Road, London late of the Royal Marine Hotel, Kingstown
and left 2K in personal estate.
1 Florence Amy Walsh only daughter born 18 Dec 1848 at 57 Stephens Green.
She married Henry James Leonard on 8 Jul 1879 at Dundrum Castle by
special licence.
2 Gerald John Walsh died in Dublin in July 1857.
5 Henry Thomas Walsh baptised at St Catherine’s in 1813. He lived at 89 Harcourt
Street and traded from Sir John Roberson’s Quay with his brother John. They
were bankrupt in 1848. Henry died a bachelor on 11 Jun 1878 at Dundrum
Castle having suffered from paralysis for seven years.
6 Fanny Walsh youngest daughter died 25 Oct 1860 at Dundrum Castle.
7 Albert Jasper Walsh seventh son born circa 1815. He was educated at Feinaiglian
School before graduating BA from Trinity College in 1837, and was admitted
licentiate of the RCSI in 1837 and of the Royal College of Physicians, London in 1842.
He was a founder member of the Adelaide Institution and Protestant Hospital in
Bride Street in 1848 and a trustee of the later Adelaide Hospital in Peter Street. He
married Charlotte Maria Clarke on 3 Feb 1874 at Rathfarnham Church. Charlotte
was the daughter of Courtney Kenny Clarke of Larch Hill. She was 20 years his
junior and they had at least two children. He had a practice at 89 Harcourt Street
and moved to Fitzwilliam Square in 1877. He died 24 Jul 1880 at his country
residence, Larch Hill, Whitechurch and was buried at Mount Jerome cemetery. After
her husband’s death, Charlotte went to England with her children. They were living
in Bedfordshire in the early 1890’s. Charlotte moved back to Dublin and was living
at Morehampton Road with her daughter in 1911. Charlotte died 13 Oct 1912 aged
77 years and was buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Frances Sarah Mary Walsh born circa 1876 died a spinster on 23 Feb 1947.
