Leary/O'Leary family
John Michael Leary born circa 1863 in Co Cork. He was a light keeper on Tuskar Rock and
lost his right forearm running tests on Tuskar with rocket signals in 1891. He was relieved
from active service and by 1895 he was a stores keeper for Irish Lights in Kingstown. His
brother Alphonsus was also a light keeper with the service. He married Elizabeth Carberry
on 8 Sep 1890 at Wexford RC Church Elizabeth was the daughter of John Carberry of
Michael Street, Wexford. In 1892 he was involved in the presentation made to Captain
Alexander Boxer of Irish Lights. In 1905 he donated a three foot ‘fully rigged ship in a
bottle’ to St Michael’s Church, Kingstown. John died at 22 Musgrave Terrace, Kingstown on
19 Mar 1916 at was buried at Deansgrange. Elizabeth died 12 Mar 1948 aged 82 at
Woodmere, Earlsfort Terrace and her funeral mass was held at University Church, St
Stephen’s Green. She was buried with her husband.
1 John Joseph O’Leary born 24 Oct 1892 at 29 New Bride Street. He was a civil servant
and worked with William Shields who would become a lifelong friend. He married
Sarah Florence McLoughlin on 30 Oct 1920 at Kilmacud Church. Florrie was the
daughter of Michael McLoughlin and Julia Healy and John was resident at Musgrave
Street in Kingstown. He was the managing director of Cahills the printers from 1920.
They were based in 43 Parkgate Street and were government printers. J J separated
from his wife shortly after their marriage. Cahills Printers was the first company in
the country to pay a female employee 1000 pounds per year and most of their
senior management team were women. He was a director of the company that took
over the Theatre Royal in Wexford in 1942, director of the Irish National Assurance
Company, director of the Irish Press and director of the Industrial Credit Company.
He was one of the three who proposed the setting up of Aer Lingus in 1934 and
became one of its directors. The others were Sean Ó h-Uaghaigh and Colonel
Charles Russell. He was a keen yachtsman being twice Commodore of The National
Yacht Club; his yachts included the Nicolette, Windward and Fara. He donated the
Muglin’s Cup (1945) which is still awarded. He was also a patron of the Abbey Theatre,
Dublin and a regular attendee of the Gaiety on a Sunday night. His private secretary
was Mary McDonagh who later joined the staff of the Irish Trades Union Congress.
John was a spokesman for the Irish Employers Federation at various International
Labour Conferences and had a long term relationship with Dr Thekla Beere, the first
woman Secretary of a Government Department. When William Joseph Shields (aka
actor Barry Fitzgerald) died in 1961, J J was remembered in his will. J J died in 1978
and was buried in Deansgrange.
2 Mary Elizabeth (May) O’Leary born circa 1895 in Co Dublin was single in 1948.
3 Michael Alphonsus O’Leary second son born 8 Oct 1896 at Irish Lights Stores, Kingstown
was baptised at St Michael’s, Kingstown. He was involved in the 1916-1922 movement,
sided against the treaty of 1922 and served a number of terms as a political prisoner.
He was later a director C J Fallon Ltd, the school publishers and died unmarried in 1944
at a Leeson Street nursing home late of 24 Earlsfort Terrace.
4 Bridget Kathleen O’Leary born 30 Jan 1899 at Irish Lights Stores, Kingstown died
30 Nov 1899 and was buried at Deansgrange.
5 Hannah Frances (Fanny) O’Leary born 26 Oct 1900 at Irish Light Stores, Kingstown. She
worked at Mannions in Dun Laoghaire and later at Stedalls of Abbey Street. She became
ill in 1927 and moved to Wexford. She died unmarried on 5 Jan 1933 at the home of
her uncle Michael Carbery in Wexford and was buried at Deansgrange.
6 William Joseph O’Leary born 2 Jan 1903 at Irish Lights Stores, Kingstown. He was a
publisher and worked for Cahill’s Printers. He was living at Seafield Avenue, Monkstown
and married Josephine Murphy on 2 Jan 1947 at St Michael’s, Dun Laoghaire. Williams
brother J J acted as best man. They were living at Melbrae on Newtown Avenue,
Blackrock in 1948. Josephine was living at Charlemont Avenue and was the daughter of
Joseph Murphy a director. They were the parents of John O’Leary the golfer who played
on the European Tour throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

8 Eileen O’Leary born circa 1907 died 3 Aug 1925 and was buried at Deansgrange.
9 Agnes Anne O’Leary born 23 Jan 1908 at Irish Lights Stores, Kingstown. She died
unmarried on 29 Apr 1934 and was buried at Deansgrange.
