Robert Goodbody born on 9 April 1781, second son of Mark Goodbody and Elizabeth Pim married
Margaret Pim, daughter of Jonathan and Sarah Pim, on 22 Nov 1807 at Mountrath. Robert was a
chandler and lived at Mountmellick. He put his house, tan yard, chandling and soap premises up
for sale in 1820 and moved to Clara where he leased the Brusna Mills. They lived at Charlestown
House, Clara, County Offaly. Robert was a very successful miller and three of his sons joined the
business, (Marcus, Jonathan and Lewis) trading as M J L Goodbody. Margaret died on 28 Sep 1824
aged 49 and was buried at the Society of Friends graveyard at Rosenallis.
1 Marcus Goodbody born 9 Oct 1810 at Mountmellick lived at Obelisk Park and died
31 Dec 1885.
2 Jonathan Goodbody born 16 Dec 1812 at Mountmellick married Lydia Clibborn 9 Feb 1843
at Clonmel Meeting House. The brothers build a new grist mill in 1839, it caught fire in 1840
but was covered by insurance. One of the Mills collapsed in 1851, fortunately nobody was
injured but a large quantity of wheat was destroyed. With his brothers Marcus and Lewis,
Jonathan built a gas works in 1859 and also built a factory for weaving sacks from jute. He
was one of the proposers to have a railway built between Dublin and Galway in 1845 and
he was a supporter of many diverse relief funds from the relief of the sufferers of the Indian
Mutiny to the Lancashire distress fund. By 1890 the factory and the mills were employing
more than 800 people.
He was on the Board of the Tullamore Guardians seldom missing a meeting. Lydia died
16 Jan 1886 at Charlestown House, Clara and was buried at the Friends resting Place. She
was described as a friend to the working class. Jonathan suffered a heart attack on the
Newcastle to Manchester train in his way home from a meeting of the British Association of
Manufacturing Enterprises in England. He died at the Railway Hotel, Darlington on
20 Sept 1889. A daughter and a nephew had accompanied him and were with him when he
died.

7 Jonathan Goodbody born 21 Aug 1854 at Charlestown near Clara, Kings County
was educated at Tottenham Quaker School. He became a stockbroker in
partnership with his cousin Robert Goodbody and was living at Pembroke House
in 1883. He married Ellen Pim, daughter of Frederic Pim and Hannah Beale of
Blackrock Lodge at the Friends Meeting House in Monkstown on 19 Mar 1889.
Jonatham was a governor of the Richmond Hospital. Ellen was a supporter
of the Dublin Prison Gate Mission and was Hon Sec for the District Nursing
Association. Jonathan died 21 Mar 1944 at Pembroke House and Ellen Pim
Goodbody died 23 Feb 1947 aged 79 at Pembroke House. Both were buried at
Temple Hill. Jonathan left 55K in personal estate.
1 Owen Frederick Goodbody born 6 Nov 1890 at Pembroke Lodge educated at
Bootham School, York and graduated Trinity with an engineering degree.
Second Lieut Goodbody of the Royal Engineers died a bachelor on
20 Oct 1915 of enteric fever at 15 General Hospital in Alexandria, Egypt.
He was buried at Chatby Military and War Memorial Cemetery.
2 Denis Goodbody born 19 Jun 1892 at Pembroke Lodge. He worked as a
chauffeur with the Ambulance Unit of the Redcross in France & Belgium during
WW1. He passed his First Aid Exam in March 1917 with the British Red Cross
Society and the Order of St John.
Denis was a stockbroker and married Oliver Charlotte Wilkinson, daughter of
Miles Gerard Wilkinson of Lyndhurst, Glenageary at St Paul’s Church of Ireland,
Glenageary on 24 Aug 1921. Denis of Firlands, Glenageary died 23 Nov 1971.
Olive Charlotte, died 14 Sep 1987 and both were buried at Temple Hill.
3 Marjorie Ellen Goodbody born 29 May 1894 at Pembroke Lodge was a VAD
during WW1. She also worked at Uffeculme Hospital Military & Adelaide during
influenza epidemic. She did 2 days duty at the "Leinster" disaster site. She was a
member of the British Red Cross Society & the Order of St John's Joint War
Committee, Leinster, Munster & Connaught. She also worked at Uffculme FAU
(Friends Ambulance Unit) Hospital, Moor Green, Birmingham. Marjorie Ellen of
25 Eaton Square, Monkstown died a spinster on 6 Oct 1975.
4 Lydia Kathleen Goodbody, second daughter born 26 Mar 1897 at Pembroke
Lodge. L. Kathleen Goodbody graduated Trinity in 1916 and died unmarried of
Eaton Square on 14 Mar 1973.
5 Barclay Clibborn Goodbody born 17 May 1900 at Pembroke Lodge was a farmer
and married Grace Winthrop Mary Cooper daughter of Robert Cooper of Gable
House, Monasterevin at St John’s Church Monasterevin, Co Kildare on
19 Apr 1929. In 1939 is was looking for a job as a farm manager. He moved to
Kent where is also farmed he married a second time in 1939 and died at Sussex.
6 Rachel Constance Goodbody, youngest daughter born 1 Dec 1904 at Pembroke
Lodge. Late of Pembroke House she died unmarried at Elpis Hospital on
14 May 1936.
3 Thomas Pim Goodbody born 16 Apr 1814 died 22 Oct 1890.
4 Robert James Goodbody born 23 Dec 1815 died 25 Nov 1893.
5 Richard Goodbody born 30 Sep 1817 died at Dame Street on 5 Oct 1835.
6 Lewis Frederic Goodbody born 1 Oct 1819 married Rebecca Clibborn in 1851 and they lived at
Drayton Villa in Clara, Co Offaly. Rebecca died in 1855. Lewis secondly married Catherine Ellis in
1862. Lewis died 15 Aug 1887 at Matlock, Bath and was buried at the Friend's burial ground in Clara.
Robert secondly married Jane Pim, daughter of James Pim on 4 Feb 1829. Robert died on 25 Jan 1860 aged 79
and was buried at Rosenalis with his first wife.
