Hercules Henry Dickinson born 14 Sep 1827 baptised at St Peter’s Dublin. He was the
son of Charles Dickinson and Elizabeth Russell. His father was vicar of St Ann's, Dublin
from 1833 to 1842 and Bishop of Meath from 1840 to 1842. Hercules was educated
at Dr Fynn's School in Harcourt Street and at Trinity College Dublin. He graduated in
1850 and took Holy orders. He was appointed Vicar of St Annes by Richard Whatley in
1855. Bishop Whately was a close friend of his father. It was during his incumbency
that the graveyard was closed (1857), a new school building built (1858), the proposal
of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners for the repairing and re-fronting of the Church
agreed (1858) and the redesign of the interior (1860). He was a promoter of higher
education for women, he worked in partnership with Archbishop Richard Trench in
the foundation of Alexandra College in Dublin in 1866. He was warden and chaplain
to Alexandra College until his retirement. In 1865 he was appointed sub-dean at the
Chapel Royal, Dublin Castle, and Dean in 1868. As Dean, he became chaplain to the
Lord Lieutenant and the viceregal household. He later served as treasurer and
precentor of St Patrick's Cathedral. He married Mary Harriet Kennedy on 2 Oct 1867
at St Anne’s Dublin. Mary was the daughter of Evory Kennedy, obstetrician and ex
Master of the Rotunda Hospital, and his wife Alicia Hamilton. They had at nine children
of whom 6 survived in 1911. Hercules died at his home in Baldonnell, Co Dublin on
17 May 1905, his son Page the informant. He was buried at Mount Jerome. Mary
Mabel died 29 Jun 1916 at 40 Marlboro Road, Donnybrook, and was buried with her
husband. There is a memorial to Hercules in St Anne’s Church, Dublin.
1 Charles Dickinson born 16 Jul 1869 at Upper Castle Yard, Deanery House,
baptised at St Peters. He graduated Trinity college and represented the
college in athletics. In 1891/2 he won the Quarter-mile Championship of
Ireland, the 220 Yards Championship of Ireland in 1892 and in the same year
won the English Quarter mile Championship. Charles was a land agent and
served his apprenticeship with Messrs J R Stewart & Son of Leinster Street,
Dublin. By 1901 he was an assistant examiner with the Landed Estates Court.
He married Margaret Olive Rawson on 30 Apr 1901 at Carlow Parish Church.
Olive was from Barrowville, Carlow, and the daughter of Surgeon Lieutenant
Colonel Edward Albert Rawson MD, and his wife Agnes Cuthbert Johnstone. In
1911 they were living in Kimmage and Charles was a Fellow of the Surveyors
Institute. By 1918 they were living at Ashurst, Mount Merrion Avenue where they
remained until 1923. Charles died 21 Jun 1926 at Greystones and was buried at
Redford Cemetery, Greystones. Charles of Moyne, Greystones, Co Wicklow, and
South Frederick Street, Dublin left 13K in personal estate. Olive died on
30 Aug 1943 in Milton House, Monifieth, Angus, Scotland. Her remains were
repatriated and she was buried in Redford Cemetery with her husband.
1 Elizabeth Olive (Betty) Dickinson born circa 1902 in Co Down married
Captain Bertram Upton Sinclair Cripps on 29 Dec 1921 at SS Philip &
James, Booterstown. Bertram was based at Richmond Barracks with the
2nd Battalion, Royal Welsh Regiment and the son of the late Percy Howard
Cripps, JP of Windford Manor, Somerset. The wedding reception was held
at Ashurst and the couple honeymooned in Switzerland.
2 Edward Mark Norman Charles Dickinson born circa 1903 in Co Down
married Anne Joyce Owen. Edward died in Guernsey in 1974. Anne died in
1978 and was buried at Redford Cemetery.
2 Harold Evory Dickinson second son born 26 Jun 1872 at Dublin Castle was called to
the Irish Bar in 1909 but never practiced. He married Florence Broderick at
Johannesburg on 24 Jan 1903. Florence was the daughter of Major E G Broderick of
Brighton. He was living in Ashfield Demesne, Beagh, Galway in 1911 and was a land
agent and receiver. He enlisted during WW1 and later was a Divisional
Commissioner of the R I C. As an ex captain in the British Army he died 27 Jul 1924
at Greystones, his brother Cyril the informant.

3 Mary Mabel Dickinson born 27 Jan 1875 at Dublin Castle baptised at St Annes.
4 Cyril Henry Dickinson third son born 15 July 1876 at Dublin Castle baptised at St
Annes. He attended Trinity and represented them at athletics in 1897/8. He played
hockey for Three Rock Rovers. He was an examiner in the Judges Land Court. He
married Aileen Seymore Duckett-Steuart on 12 Aug 1902 at St Anne’s Church.
Aileen was the daughter of Captain C E H Duckett Steuart of Steuarts Lodge, Co
Carlow. He volunteered with Red Cross during WW1 and was a chauffeur based in
Italy with the British Ambulance Unit. He was living at Braeside in Greystones in
1924. Aileen ran the Golf Hotel in Greystones from 1926 and in 1933 she rebranded
as The Burnaby House Hotel. Cyril died on 2 Feb 1955 at Chagford, Devon. Aileen a
retired hotel proprietor died 7 May 1958 at Greystones and was buried at Redford
Cemetery.
1 Basil Seymour Dickinson born 24 Aug 1912 at St Ronan’s Clondalkin. He
married Nancy M Willcocks in London on 2 Aug 1941. Nancy was the
daughter of Lt-Commander A E Willcocks. Basil died in Southampton in
1976.
5 Frank Selwyn Dickinson born 27 April 1878 at St Anne’s Vicarage baptised at St
Annes. He attended Haileybury School and Trinity College Dublin. He volunteered
in 1899 and served in the Boer war with the Canadian Contingent. He went to
British Columbia with Edward Pomeroy Colley and died in 1947.

7 Page Lawrence Dickinson fifth son born 8 Sep 1881 at St Anne’s Vicarage baptised
at St Annes. In 1901 he was on the Irish Cycling team. He was apprentice and later
partner to Richard Caulfield Orpen and in 1911 living with his mother at Marlboro
Road he was president of the Architectural Association of Ireland. He exhibited
sketches at the Water Colour Society of Ireland's exhibitions in 1906 and 1908, at
the Irish International Exhibition in 1907 and at the Royal Hibernian Academy in
1907. He married Joan Fitzgerald-Creagh on 12 Jun 1912 at Sandford Church. Joan
was the daughter of the late Capt Augustine Fitzgerald-Creagh, of Cahirbane, Co
Clare. The couple honeymooned in Wicklow and Wexford. In 1915 he enlisted as a
member of Dublin University Officer Training Corps and became a captain in the
Mechanical Transport division. As an architect he worked as an author and journalist
and was co-author, with Thomas Sadleir, of Georgian Mansions in Ireland in 1911
and “The Dublin of Yesterday in 1929. He mainly worked in England after the war.
Joan died 9 Jul 1952 at Penzance, Cornwall. He died a widower at Sugar Loaf
Cottage, the house of his daughter in Kilmancanogue on 1 Oct 1958 and was buried
at Greystones.
