Elizabeth Pim in Dublin on 21 Nov 1766. Elizabeth was the daughter of John and
Katherine Pim. He took the additional name Coates on the death in 1770 of Hosea
Coates, banker from who he inherited his estates. His partnership came to a close on the
death of Patrick Lawless in 1779. His bank in Thomas Street closed in 1793. John Dawson
Coates, died at Dawson’s Court, near Blackrock on Sunday 7 May 1797 and was buried at
the Friends burial ground near St Stephen’s Green. He left his estate in Booterstown
including Dawson Court to his wife for her lifetime and then to be passed to his two
daughters Elizabeth and Anna. His wife Elizabeth died 18 Jul 1812 at Blackrock and was
buried at Killaam, Edenderry.
1 John Dawson born 6 Jul 1769 in Dublin died at Lyons, France on 26 Nov 1791 and
was buried at Stephen’s Green.
2 Elizabeth Dawson Coates 22 Sep 1771 at Dublin. She married William Duckett, a
wealthy landowner of Co Carlow, on 10 Sep 1790. William was the son of Jonas
Duckett and Hannah Alloway of Duckett's Grove.
1 Elizabeth Duckett died young.
2 Elizabeth Dawson Duckett married William Richard Stewart on 18 Jun 1843.
William of Stewarts Lodge Co Carlow was High Sheriff in 1820. Elizabeth
died 4 Mar 1893.
3 John Dawson Duckett eldest son born 10 Aug 1791 was a magistrate in 1819.
He married his first Cousin Sarah Summers Hutchinson on 16 Mar 1819.
Sarah was the daughter of William Hutchinson of Timoney Park, Co Tipperary.
John died 27 Sep 1866 at Duckett's Grove and was interred in the family vault
at Newtown.
1 William Duckett only son born circa 1822 was high sheriff for Carlow in
1854 and Queen’s County in 1881. He married Anna Maria Morony on
16 Jan 1868. Maria died 12 May 1894. No issue found.
He secondly married Marie Georgina Cumming on 19 Nov 1895 at 37
Raglan Road by special licence. Marie of 37 Raglan Road was the daughter
of Rev Robert Gordon Cumming, late captain 58th Regt, and the widow of
Theophilus Thompson of Forde Lodge, Co Cavan. She was nearly 30 years
younger than her husband and had two daughters, Olive and Maud, by her
first marriage. They honeymooned in Co Wicklow. William died 22 Jun 1908
and left 94K in personal estate. Maria became the heir to Duckett's Grove.
She and her surviving daughter Olive Thompson continued to live at
Duckett's Grove for some years. Maria was litigious and would prefer to
take a case to court rather than pay employees and trades people. Maria
was a supporter of the Adelaide Hospital and had a ward dedicated to her in
1909 after she donated them £1250. When she discovered that they cared
for Roman Catholic soldiers during the war she no longer funded them.
Olive married Captain Edward Stamer O’Grady on 12 Jun 1916 at Armagh
after a 10 year engagement, having been her mother's constant companion,
and moved to Uckfield in Sussex. Marie left Duckett's Grove and moved
between London and De Windesore, 14 Raglan Road. She frequently rented
out De Windesore including to the Cornwall family in 1922. Maria died
9 Mar 1937 at St Patricks Hospital, late of Raglan Road and was buried at
Mount Jerome. She left 150K in personal estate and the Rev Robert
Northridge of Cross Avenue was one of the executors. Later it was
reassessed at 100k as she had spent 50K in legal fees fighting against the
use of the new book of common prayer. In the later part of her life she lived
in squalor with the house stuffed the gills with furniture and rubbish. The
house on Raglan road was put up for sale prior to her death and the
auctioneers were brought in to prepare the contents for auction. They
discovered jewellery, money, cheques hidden in numerous locations
wrapped in bits of fabric or newspaper. She left everything to strictly
Protestant and Evangelical charities and her daughter Olive was cut off
without even an angry shilling. Olive contested the Will and the eccentricities
of Maria came to light and it was noted that she had been put under the care
of the court in 1935. From convictions that people were standing upside
down to taunt her, to the nuns next door trying to poison her, to blowing a
whistle in a restaurant to gain attention so that she could advise other
diners as to her ‘race going’ daughter and her own charitable donations. It
was clear to the court that Maria was suffering from religious mania and
some type of delusional insanity and an earlier Will was probated. It is
thought the Olive received 30K of the estate and the balance was left to
charity. Oliver died in 1957 and left 44K in personal estate.
4 William Duckett born 3 Jan 1763 of Russellstown Park, Co Carlow, High Sheriff in

3 Anna Dawson married William Hutchinson of Timoney, County Tipperary on
10 Jun 1791, at the Quaker meeting house, Dublin. William was the son of James
and Christina Hutchinson.
