Oliver D'Alton of Mount D'Alton
Oliver D’Alton married Catherine O’Reilly daughter of Hugh O’Reilly of Ballinlough. Three of his
sons were given the title of Count of the German Empire in 1777 by Maria Theresa Walburga
Amalia Christina (German: Maria Theresia the only female ruler of the Habsburg dominions
and the last of the House of Habsburg. She was the sovereign of Austria, Hungary, Croatia,
Bohemia, Transylvania, Mantua, Milan, Lodomeria and Galicia, the Austrian Netherlands, and
Parma. By marriage, she was Duchess of Lorraine, Grand Duchess of Tuscany and Holy Roman.
This title was registered by Ulster King of Arms in 1785 and was to their heirs both male and
female, and the heirs of their heirs if lawfully begotten to bear arms. Two of his nephews
(sons of his brother Peter) were also granted the title Count :- Edward D’Alton of Grennanstown
and Christopher D’Alton who died at Richmond in Ballybough in 1793.
1 Richard Dalton, eldest son was a Field Marshal was Knight Chamberlaine and Privy
Councillor of State to his Imperial Majesty and Commander of the Theresian order,
Major General of Regiment and Governor of the Netherlands. He was conferred with
the title of Count in 1777. He died in Treves on 16 Feb 1790 (from an inflammation of
the bowels) and was buried at Luxemburg.
2 Christopher D’Alton, born circa 1725 second son of Oliver D’Alton and Catherine O’Reilly
of Mount Dalton, Loughan. He married Maria Costello, daughter of William and Jane
Costello of Tullaghan, Co Mayo in 1748. He was styled Baron of Rathconrath and was
conferred with the Title of Count in 1777 and granted arms in 1885. Christopher died
circa 1785 and Maria Dowager Countess D’Alton died at Kilmacud in June 1786.
1 Oliver D’Alton born circa 1750. The Rt Hon Oliver D’Alton, Count of the German
Empire married Claire French of Abbey Street only daughter of Dominic French in
June 1786. Oliver died at Mount Dalton in 1799. Probate June 1799.

4 Sophia Josephina D’Alton born circa 1770. Countess Sophia married Robert Dillon
O’Reilly of Kells on 10 May 1794. Robert, Count Dillon O’Reilly, late of Lennox Brook,
Kells died March 1817 aged 78.
1 Eliza Maria only daughter married Henry Samuel Baker, eldest son of H A
Baker of Dublin on 11 Aug 1825 at Moynalty Church.
2 George O’Reilly died 1 Oct 1832 at Cuffe Street.
5 Elizabeth Johanna D’Alton fl 1776. Countess D’Alton married Ignatius Dillon Begg son
of James Begg of Beech Abbey and Miss Dillan, daughter of Patrick Dillon of
Knockeanney, Roscommon on 21 Jan 1801 at Milltown, Westmeath. The family moved
to Mount Dalton, Co Westmeath. Both of Ignatius parents died at Mount Dalton, his
father on the 28 Dec 1808 and his mother on the 29 Dec 1808. Ignatius died in 1813
and Elizabeth died at Lower Gardiner Street in December 1832.
1 James D’Alton Begg born circa 1802 a minor in 1815.
2 C D Begg born circa 1803 of Beech Abbey and Mount D’Alton died at Mount
Dalton in May 1848 aged 43.
3 Maria Josephina Dillon Begg of Molesworth Street born circa 1806 married
Thomas Babington of Stephen’s Green at St Peters Church 2 Jun 1829. Thomas
was a solicitor with offices at 73 Lower Baggot Street. The family lived at
Hollywood in Roebuck from 1850 to 1858. Thomas died 26 Jan 1858 and Maria
died 11 May 1863 aged 57.

2 Mary Elizabeth Babington baptised at Westland Row on 20 Aug 1832.
Mary only daughter died at Baggot Street 25 Apr 1840.
3 Ignatius Thomas D’Alton Babington baptised at Westland Row on
17 Jun 1834.
4 William D’Alton Babington baptised at Westland row on 17 Dec 1835.
He graduated Trinity MA in 1861 and as second and only son was
called to the Irish Bar in 1862. He was a prizewinning yachtsman and
author of Fallacies of Race Theories as Applied to National Characteristics.
He died a bachelor at 4 Roby Place, Kingstown on 19 Nov 1893. He was
buried at Deansgrange.
4 Oliver William Costello Dillon Begg born circa 1811 attended Saint Bridget’s
Seminary in Blanchardstown. Oliver Count D’Alton Begg married Maria Theresa
Nugent, daughter of the late James Nugent of Streamstown House and niece of
the late Edward, Count Nugent of Ballinacor, Co Westmeath on 7 Sep 1846 at
Mullingar. Oliver presented the Parish of Milltown with a gift of 1 acre of land on
17 Dec 1837. Oliver died in May 1848 and was buried at Milltown, Co Meath.
Maria died at 49 Bath Avenue, Dublin on 16 Jan 1892 aged 70.
1 Countess Elizabeth Mary D’Alton Begg only child born 17 Jan 1848 died
22 Jan 1895 at 22 Shelbourne Road and left real estate in the Counties
Westmeath and Cavan to her relative Joseph Michael Plunkett of
Ballybrophy but this was disputed by Eleanor Begg who claimed she was
next of kin but a settlement was reached and the land held by the D’Alton
family for 8 centuries passed to the Plunketts. The title is thought to have
become extinct on her death. She was buried with her cousin William
Babington at Deansgrange.
6 Catherine D’Alton married John O’Connor of Ballycumber House, Kings County. John died
circa 1834.
3 Count James D’Alton, Major General in the Imperial Forces was shipwrecked off the coast
of Essex on his way to Ireland in 1795.
4 Elizabeth D’Alton married Edmund Nugent son of James Nugent and Eleanor D'Alton of Ballincor on
9 Apr 1741. Elizabeth was also conferred with the title Countess in 1785.
5 Thomas D’Alton became a priest.
