Traverstown and his wife Margaret Wogan in 1704 are listed in the fifth report of the Deputy Keeper
under Fine 98.

The Empress Maria Theresa, by Letter Patent, dated at Vienna 25 Apr 1777, granted the title of Counts and
Countesses of the German Empire to Richard D’Alton, a Privy Councillor, Chamberlain, a Major General,
and Knight of the Military Order of Maria Theresa; his eldest brother Christopher D’Alton (then styled Baron
Rathconrath, in the county of Westmeath); his brother James D’Alton, a colonel in the Imperial Service; his
sister Elizabeth, wife of Edward Nugent of Balinacor, Co Westmeath, his cousin Edward D’Alton, of
Grenanstown, Co Tipperary, Chamberlain, Colonel of Clairfait’s Regiment of Foot, in the Imperial Service;
and the said Edward’s brother, Christopher D’Alton Major of the Saxon Grenadier Guards, & Co., and to the
heirs, both male and female, of each and every of them lawfully begotten. Permission to use these titles
granted by George III.

1 Judith Dalton daughter of Peter D’Alton of Grenanstown born circa 1709 married Thomas
Tancred on 3 Apr 1731 at York Minster Chester Cathedral. Her marriage settlement was £1100.
Thomas succeeded his father Sir Thomas Tancred in December 1744 and they lived at Cuffnells,
Lyndhurst In the New Forest near Romsey in Hampshire. Judith died at Bath in January 1780 and
Thomas died in April 1784 at Paris aged 77
2 Mary D’Alton married the Hon General Thomas Plunkett, Governor and Commander of Antwerp at
St Michan’s Parish Dublin on 10 May 1756. Thomas was of Castle Plunkett. Mary died 19 Oct 1778
at Flanders and was buried in the mausoleum of the English Monastery. Thomas died aged 63 at
Liege on 20 Jan 1799.

3 Catherine D'Alton born circa 1718 professed in 1740 and took the name Sister Maria Bernarde.
She became the Abbess of Ypres in 1760 and died on 6 Oct 1783.
4 Frances Dalton married Charles Reilly, surgeon of Dublin in 1751. Charles died at Bolton Street in
November 1764 and his Will was proved on 3 Dec 1764. His executor was his brother in law, Peter
Dalton of Grenanstown. Frances was mentioned in the Will of her brother Peter in 1785.

3 Fanny Reilly niece of Michael Connor of Drogheda mentioned in Will of 1785.
5 Peter Dalton of Grenanstown fl 1778 when his sister Mary died and is on the Catholic
Qualification rolls of that year. He died on 2 May 1785. His Will makes no mention of wife or
children.
6 Christopher D’Alton was Colonel Commandant of the Elector of Saxony’s body guards. He was
granted the title of Count in 1777. He died on 8 Oct 1793 at his residence in Richmond near
Ballybough Bridge, Dublin. This house was later purchased by John Claudius Beresford and
it became known as Drumcondra House, later All Hallows College.
7 Edward D’Alton born circa 1737 married Mary M’Carthy, daughter of John M’Carthy of Spring
House Co Tipperary in July 1771. He attained the rank of Lieut General and Chamberlain in the
Emperors Service. He was granted the title of Count in 1777. He was living Lentz, upper Austria
when he made his Will in 1791. Edward was killed at the battle of Hoondscoote, near Dunkirk
on 24 Aug 1793 while commanding the Imperial troops acting with HRH the Duke of York.
His lands at Tullamoylan and Killriffitt outside Nenagh were put up for lease after his death by
Denis M’Carthy of Spring House. Mary was granted a pension of £300 by the Duke of York. Mary,
Countess D’Alton died at Bath 12 Aug 1815 aged 70. There is a plaque in her memory at Bath
Abbey.
1 Mary Frances Colette (Frances) D’Alton, younger daughter born 27 Dec 1773 at Vienna
married Sir Richard Steel of Hampstead (Albert College Park, Glasnevin) at Walcot Church,
Bath on 25 Mar 1798. Richard succeeded to the Baronetcy in 1787 and was Sheriff of
Dublin in 1820. He died at his residence 50 St Stephen's Green on 2 Aug 1850 and his
Will was proved in August 1850. Lady Steel died 18 Jul 1857 at Weymouth and was
buried at Radipole, Dorset and her Will was proved in October 1857.
2 Peter D’Alton eldest son born circa 1775 married Rosalie Barnwall, daughter of Nicholas
Barnewall, 14th Baron Trimleston & his first wife Maria Henrietta D’Aguin on 3 Dec 1795.
Peter joined the Light Dragoons and attained the rank of Captain. He was High Sheriff of
Co Tipperary in 1840. He succeeded as Count of the Roman Empire on the death of his
father in 1793. He was insolvent in 1849 and living in Sandymount. He died 23 Mar 1851
at Kildare Street aged 75. Rosalie Countess D’Alton died in Florence on 2 Feb 1864 aged
92 having outlived two of her three children. Peter had a fourth child from a relationship
with Bridget Mary Williams.
1 Edward Nicholas Thomas D’Alton born circa 1798. It was reported that he married
Margaret Mary Gertrude Cane, daughter of Patrick Cane on 28 Jan 1860 at St Mary’s
Church, Nenagh. This marriage was later denied in the newspapers. He succeeded
his father as Count D’Alton in 1851 and inherited the Grenanstown estate. He was
appointed DL in 1862 and High Sheriff in 1866. He travelled frequently between
Italy, Germany and Ireland and when in Dublin stayed at the Hibernia Hotel. His
death was announced by the Irish Times in 1870 but later reported as being a hoax.
He was the owner of 1375 acres at Grenanstown in 1876.
He died at the Norfold Hotel in Brighton on 3 Sep 1877 aged 79 leaving 14K in
personal estate with a bequest of £100, each to the sisters of Mercy in Nenagh and
Rev Edmond O’Leary PP to be distributed to the poor of the parish.

2 Richard D’Alton, second son was living in France in 1851. He died 22 Sep 1856 at
Toulouse.
3 Henrietta D’Alton married Major-General Henry Eustace, of Corbally and brother
of the Dowager Trimleston in 1819. He was with the Royal Engineers and was
appointed Lieut Gen in 1830. He died on 5 Oct 1844 at Geneva and Henrietta died
at Pisa in May 1857.
1 Rosalie Eustace, only daughter married Marquis of Ricci Parracianni of
Rome on 15 Aug 1853 at Florence by the Archbishop of Florence.
2 Henry Eustace, eldest son lived in Italy. He married Albertina Foschi,
widow of Count Foschi and daughter of the late Lieut Gen Marquess
Paulucci at the Church of Santa Maria de Corboli near Florence in
October 1861. Henry had lands and Corbally, Co Meath and succeeded to
the lands at Grennanstown. He died late of Grennanstown 12 Aug 1898
and left 6K in personal estate in Ireland.
1 Henrietta Albertina Maria Francesca Eustace died late of
Grennanstown and Nice, France on 19 Aug 1920.
4 Peter D’Alton Williams born 8 Oct 1822 in Co Tipperary son of Bridget Mary William
was illegitimate but acknowledged by his father. He attended St Stanislaus College
at Tullabeg, studied medicine in Dublin and worked at St Vincent’s Hospital on
Stephens Green. He was a poet and patriot and was involved the Young Ireland
Party. He was a contributor to the “Nation” newspaper under the non de plume
‘Shamrock’ and then with friend Kevin O’Doherty started the “Irish Tribune”
newspaper. They were engaged in the attempted insurrection of 1848 and were
arrested and tried, O’Doherty was convicted and transported to Australia, while
Peter was acquitted. He went to Edinburgh to finish his studies and took his degree
and then moved to Mobile in the US in 1851 taking up a position at Mobile College.
He moved to New Orleans and married schoolteacher, Elizabeth M Connolly circa
1856. He died 5 Jul 1862 from consumption at Thibodeaux Louisiana. Elizabeth
died in 1917.

3 Albert Thomas Christopher D’Alton born 1 Apr 1776 joined the 15th Regiment of the Light
Dragoons as cornet in 1801. He attained the rank of Major in the 90th Light Infantry and
retired in 1822. He married Anne Charles, daughter of Charles Charles of St Vincent on
22 Apr 1813 on the Island of St Vincent and was residing in Conduit Street, London in
1818. Anne died at Kingston near Portsmouth on the 24 Aug 1827 aged 41 and was
buried at Portsea. Albert died at Cheltenham 23 May 1839 and was buried at Holy Trinity
Churchyard in Cheltenham with his daughter Anne.

6 Frances Elizabeth D’Alton, only surviving daughter married the Rev George Law
Harkness at St Andrews, Clifton, Bristol on 14 Nov 1849.
1 Henry D’Alton Harkness born 10 Mar 1859 was a Captain in the 41st Regiment.
He succeeded to the lands at Grenanstown.

4 Ann D’Alton born circa 1778 married Warren Hastings Rowland Jackson of Castleview, Co
Cork in March 1804. Anne Died at Weston-super-Mare in November 1845 aged 67. Warren
died at London 29 Oct 1851 aged 71.
