John Crampton born circa 1732 an apothecary married Anne Verner of Church Hill, Armagh on
16 Jun 1764.
1 Philip Crampton born 7 Jun 1877 at William Street, Dublin. He was indentured to the
surgeon Solomon Richards and began his medical studies in 1791. In 1798 he passed
the exams for surgeon's mate and that same year he received his Letters Testimonial
from the Royal College of Surgeons. Three days later Crampton was appointed
surgeon to the Meath Hospital, a position he held for the next 60 years. He married
Selina Cannon on 10 May 1800 (ML). Selina was the daughter of Patrick Hamilton
Cannon, an army officer. They lived at 14 Merrion Square and they had at least six
children. On 9 Apr 1834 Selina was reading in the drawing room when her dress
caught fire she was badly burned. Despite attention by her husband and other
medical professions from the city, she died the following day. Philip became Surgeon
General and was created baronet in 1839. Philip died 10 June 1858 at 14 Merrion
Square, Dublin, and was buried at Mount Jerome cemetery. The funeral bier was too
big to fit through the gate (he had requested to be buried in a coffin lined with Roman
concrete), so the main gates had to be opened and the hearse had to drive to the burial
spot. Philip retained the full possession of his great mental powers and extraordinary
physical power until just a few days before his death. He left 40K in personal estate,
each of his daughters to receive 5K. The College of Surgeons placed a marble bust of
the late Sir Philip Crampton among the memorials of distinguished members of their
body. In August 1862 a drinking fountain was erected at Brunswick Street in his
memory. The sculptor was Joseph Robinson Kirk.
1 Anne Marie Crampton born circa 1804 married Eugene Le Clerc, MD, Asst
surgeon of the Limerick militia 17 May 1851 at St Peter’s Church.
2 John Fiennes Twisleton Crampton born 13 Aug 1805 was a talented amateur
artist. He became a diplomat and was minister to the United States from
1852 to 1856 and Minister to Russia from 1858 to 1860. He married Victorie
Balfe at St Petersburg on 31 Mar 1860. Victorie was a celebrated vocalist and
the daughter of the Irish composer Michael William Balfe. They were divorced
in 1863, and there was no issue from the marriage. He became the 2nd Bart on
the death of his father and died 5 Dec 1886. He was buried at St Patrick’s
Enniskerry. He left over 104K in personal estate which he left to is two surviving
sisters. Victorie by her second marriage became Duchess of Frias.
3 Josiah Crampton born circa 1809 took holy orders. He married his cousin
Elizabeth Crampton, daughter of the Rev Josiah Crampton. He was an amateur
astronomer and died in 1883.
1 Dorothea Henrietta Crampton married William Gore of the 13th Light
Dragoons on 13 Sep 1860 at Florence Court Church.
4 Selina Catherine Crampton born circa 1813 was an amateur painter and died a
spinster in 1893 at Bushy Park, Enniskerry. Her nephew the Rev W F Boyle the
informant. She left 42K in personal estate.
5 Charlotte Twisleton Crampton third daughter born circa 1816 died at Glenbrook,
Enniskerry on 23 Oct 1869.
6 Adelaide Crampton youngest daughter married Henry Prittie Jephson of the Royal
Irish Fusiliers at St Peter’s Church on 14 Sep 1840. Henry died in 1866 and Adelaide
died in 1892, both were buried at St Patrick's, Enniskerry.
1 Adelaide Jephson born 21 Aug 1841 at Merrion Square, the residence of
Philip Crampton.
2 Henry Lorenzo Jephson born 29 Aug 1844 at Merrion Square.
died in 1914 and was buried at Enniskerry.
1 Adelaide Jephson married Captain Grenville Fortescue in 1912. He
was killed in action in 1915.
2 Rev Josiah Crampton, rector of Castle Connell, county Limerick.
1 Elizabeth Crampton married her cousin Josiah Crampton in 1833.
2 Katherine Sarah Crampton youngest daughter married the Rev William A
Neville at Raheny Church on 31 Dec 1845. W A was the eldest son of Brent N
Neville of Gardiner’s Place and Ashbrook Co Dublin.
3 Belissa Crampton married John Smyly in 1796.
1 Josiah Smyly born circa 1804 was a surgeon and died in 1864.
