Dr John Fallon Sidney Colohan MD of Athenry, Galway son of James Skerrett Colohan, Bank Manager
and Maria Sydney. He studied medicine in Edinburgh and qualified physician & surgeon in 1892. He
married Emilie Margaret Kavanagh, youngest daughter of John Kavanagh of Prospect Avenue,
Glasnevin and Temora, Blackrock at Donnybrook Chapel on 09.09.1896. Witnesses: Patrick Quinlan
and Lily H Hackett. The reception was held at Airfield, the home of her sister Mrs Hackett (Maria
Imelda Kavanagh). Emilie lost her wedding ring at the reception and although it was later found they
missed the mailboat from Kingstown and had to wait until the following day to go on honeymoon.
The lived at Woodville, Rock Road from 1897 to 1910 when he purchased the Grand Hotel, Malahide
for 10K. He arranged for the hotel to be painted pink in celebration of his favorite drink - pink
champagne. Dr Colohan was a pioneer of motoring and a founder member of the Irish Automobile
Club is thought to be the first owner of a car in Ireland, a 3 HP Benz which he sold in
1902 for £1400. He was a partner in the firm Hutton & Sons, Motor Car builders and by 1911 he had
two cars registered, these were IK 125 and IK 169.
Emilie died in 1914 and John married Julia Carton, widow of John Joseph Cartan and daughter of
Edward Mulchinock in 1915. Julia died in 1917 and left over 12K in person estate, her husband the
main beneficiary. John moved to Dean Cottage, Cookham, Dean, Berks and died 27 August 1932 and
was buried in St Peter's churchyard, Marlow, Berks. He bequeathed over £15,000 to his two servants
Richard MacAllistair, Valet and his valet's sister Maggie MacAllistair, originally from Malahide, Co Dublin.
