John Kavanagh of the Athenry Hotel, Galway and of the Prince of Wales Hotel married Anne Marie
O’Neill only daughter of John and Susanna O’Neill of North Wall. John O’Neill died on 10.08.1842 and
Susanna died on 01.08.1856 or 1859 aged 70 years.
Mrs Kavanagh of the Prince of Wales Hotel and Temora, Blackrock gave a donation of £200 for the
erection of a Sacred Heart Altar in St Laurence’s Parochial Church and £10-10-0 to furnish a cell in
the new Convent of St Laurence O’Toole in March 1882.

1 Maria Imelda Kavanagh, eldest daughter born circa 1842 City of Dublin married Edward
Holehan of Capel Street by special licence at St Laurence O'Toole Catholic Church, North
Strand on 09.07.1861. Edward was a hotel keeper and proprietor of The Railway
Refreshment Room at Broadstone. He died 4 Mar 1875 following a fall from his horse
while on a hunt at Collinstown near Mullingar. He was buried at Glasnevin and left 8K in
personal estate.
1 Joseph Michael Holehan born at Dorset Street on 28.09.1863 died at the residence of
his grandfather on North Wall in September 1871 and was buried at Glasnevin.
2 John Henry Patrick Holehan born at Dorset Street on 04.03.1866.
3 Anna Alberta Holehan aka Lily Hackett born 19.03.1869 married Herbert Robinson, a
distiller of The Elms, Coventry at Donnybrook Chapel on 01.09.1897. The reception was
held at Airfield in Donnybrook.
Maria secondly married Michael Charles Hackett, of the Queen's Own Royal Regiment and son
of Walter Hackett at St Mary's Chapel Cathedral, Marlborough Street on 21.04.1879. Maria died
late of Brooklawn, Palmerstown on 04.01.1922.
2 Susan Marie Kavanagh born circa 1845 died 06.05.1847 aged 2 years. 4 others died young.

4 Joseph Mark Kavanagh born 22.08.1847 at the Prince of Wales Hotel, North Wall married
Margaret Hickey daughter of Michael Hickey of Sallypark on 15.06.1868 at the Chapel in
Fairview. Joseph proprietor of the Gravediggers Pub in Glasnevin died on 10.01.1901 aged
55 years and Margaret Mary died on 23.12.1909 both at Prospect Square, Glasnevin.

at St Michan’s married Mary Jane circa 1902. They were living at Main Street, Arklow
in 1911.

Catholic Church. John died circa 1920 and Josephine died on 09.11.1943 aged 69

Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Booterstown .
The family were living in Athenry, Galway in 1901. John died of TB on 29.08.1902 aged 50
years at 67 St Stephens Green. Witness: Achilles Delcambre. In 1911 Maud was living at
Mountjoy Square.
1 John Alexis Michael (Jack) Kennedy youngest son born 12.11.1891 at Temora died
suddenly on 27.06.1904 aged 12 years at St Boniface’s College, Plymouth. The
family were living in Athenry, Galway in 1901.

James S Colahan on 09.09.1896 at the Roman Catholic Chapel in Donnybrook. Dr Colohan a
pioneer of motoring bought the Grand Hotel in 1910. Emilie formerly of Woodville, Blackrock
died on 09.05.1914 aged 48 years late of Grand Hotel, Malahide. John died in 1932 aged 70
years in Maidenhead.
John Kavanagh opened a new Dining Room in 1876 at the Prince of Wales Hotel.
The transfer of the Spirit Licence was granted to Anne Kavanagh of Prospect, Glasnevin in January
1879 following the death of John Kavanagh in November 1878. Licence was confirmed to Margaret
Kavanagh of Prospect Avenue, Glasnevin in October 1901.
Joseph Kavanagh who kept the public house open for bona-fide travellers was fined for selling drink
during prohibited hours on Sunday April 23rd 1899.
