John Colclough born 1811 baptised at Freshford on 6 Nov 1811 son of William Colclough
and Elinor Lett of Tubrid, Co Kilkenny. He was indentured to his uncle Richard Colclough,
a coach and buggy builder of Duke Street in 1825 aged 14. He married Mary Jane Austin
on 5 Apr 1836 at St Nicholas. Mary Jane was the daughter of Richard Austin, a paint stainer
of 1 Molesworth Street and John was resident at South Anne Street. He inherited the
coach business at 22 Duke Street on the death of his aunt Jane Colclough nee Shevenels,
the second wife of his uncle Richard of Cullenswood. The coach business was established
in 1801 and his uncle Richard died in 1843. Mary Jane died at 4 South Anne Street after
childbirth in January 1842.

John secondly married Elizabeth Austin on 29 Jun 1842 at St Luke’s Dublin. Elizabeth was the
daughter of the late Richard Austin of Molesworth Street. John expanded the business and took
a lease on 23 Duke Street. They lived at Tower Field House on the Crumlin Road in 1856 and by
1858 they were at Glenville, Donnybrook where Elizabeth died on 28 Feb 1866. She was buried
at Mount Jerome. John died 4 Apr 1869 at 20 Pembroke Road and was buried with his wife.
2 Mary Jane Colclough eldest daughter born 19 Jan 1843 married George Albert Strong on
24 Sep 1866 at St Stephen’s Church. Mary died 12 Jan 1874 at 52 Haddington Road, Dublin
and was buried in Mount Jerome with her parents.
1 John Henry Albert (Harry) Strong born 4 Jul 1867 at 23 Leeson Park Avenue died a
bachelor on 6 Sep 1946 and was buried at Mount Jerome.
2 Florence Elizabeth Strong born 22 Dec 1868 at 23 Leeson Park Avenue died a
spinster on 8 Dec 1964 and was buried at Mount Jerome.
George, a carriage axel maker secondly married Julia (Juey) Bellow in 1875. George died
4 Mar 1915 and Juey died 19 Jun 1929. Both are buried at Mount Jerome.
3 William Alfred Colclough born 27 Jul 1844 died 24 Jan 1845 aged 6 months and
was Interred at Mount Jerome cemetery.
4 Harriet Elizabeth Colclough youngest daughter born circa 1846 married Charles Duncan
on 3 Nov 1869 at St Stephen’s Church. Charles was the eldest surviving son of Peter
Duncan, a land agent of Coolfore, Co Meath. Charles was a house painter and contractor
with business premises at 13 Leeson Street and a residence at 34 Leeson Park Avenue.
Charles died 28 May 1885 at Leeson Park Avenue and was buried at Mount Jerome.
Harriet died 28 Nov 1901 and was buried with her husband.
1 Charles Malcolm Duncan eldest son born3 Sep 1870 at 20 Pembroke Road was
a master painter. He died a bachelor on 12 Nov 1941 aged 71 and was buried at
Mount Jerome.
2 Maude Margaret Duncan only daughter born 21 Jan 1872 died a spinster at the
Mageough Home on 10 Jan 1955.
3 Frederick William Austin Duncan second son born 25 May 1873 was a solicitor and
died 15 Feb 1937 aged 63 and was interred at Vale Churchyard Guernsey.
4 Henry Duncan born 20 Aug 1874.
5 Howard John Duncan born 17 May 1876 at Leeson Park Avenue was a contractor
and died a widower late of Albert Road Sandycove in 1950.
6 Egerton Wright Duncan, fifth son born 4 Mar 1878 at Leeson Park Avenue
took Holy orders and died at Springfield Mass, USA on 14 Dec 1917.

5 Noble Charles Lett Colclough born 24 Sep 1847 was a civil engineer and architect. He
married Helen Constance Grace (Ellen) Path on 22 Aug 1874 at St Nicholas’ Church,
Galway. Ellen was the daughter of Michael Path, a builder of Long Walk, Galway. Noble
died 21 Jun 1880 at the Maison de Santé Hospital in Charlemont Street and was buried in
Mount Jerome cemetery.
1 Gertrude Constance Colclough born 24 Aug 1874 at Longwalk, Galway died a
spinster on 28 Jun 1962 in Galway.
2 Dudley Colclough born circa 1878 living in Galway with his mother in 1911 and
working as a labourer. He died a bachelor at Loughrea on 25 Sep 1938.
3 Helen Mary Colclough born circa 1877 died 12 July 1879 at Westland Row.
6 John Everard Henry Colclough born circa 1849 was a coach builder living at 20 Pembroke
Road. He married Rosetta Phoebe Crofton (a minor) on 22 Jan 1873 at St Peter’s Dublin.
Rosetta was daughter to Mervyn Paget Crofton and Julia Matilda Wilson and they initially
lived at 2 Victoria Place Blackrock. They were at Melrose in Cross Avenue from 1880 to
1882. John was a coach builder, a magistrate, and for a short period a town commissioner
for Blackrock. John and his brother William expanded the business into Lemon Street and
exhibited their carriages in England. John lived at Brookfield Lodge from 1893 to 1895 and
his address was given as 14 Rostrevor Terrace, Orwell Road Rathgar (the residence of James
Ambrose Crofton) in late 1895. Rosetta died on 3 Mar 1911 in Bournemouth, England.
John of Bellagio, Bournemouth secondly married Sarah Anna (Annie) Heron at SS Philip &
James on 26 June 1912. Sarah was the daughter of Robert Finlay Heron of Dawson’s Court.
John died 29 Jun 1931 at Bournemouth and left 7K in personal estate. Sarah a widow living
with her sister in Bournemouth in 1939. Sarah died at a nursing home in Monkstown aged
92 on 24 Jan 1954 late of Dean’s Rath. She was buried with her brothers in Deansgrange.
No issue from either marriage was found.
7 William Austin Colclough born circa 1851 was a coach builder. Of Alma Villas Rathgar he
married Sarah Wilson Crofton 14 Apr 1875 at St Peter’s, Dublin. Sarah was the fourth
daughter of Mervyn Paget Crofton of Harrington Street, a hydraulic engineer. William died
30 Jul 1895 at Cliff House, Dalkey and was buried at Mount Jerome. He left 8K in personal
estate. Sarah and their children were living at Highfield Road in 1901. In his Will he set out
that the said business was to be carried on by the trustees until the youngest of his three
eldest sons should attain the age of twenty-one years and until the arrival of the said
period therein called "the time for distribution". John and William reached 21 by 1902
(Hugh having died before he reached 21). Upon the death of the testator the trade
trustees carried on the business of the testator up to the time for distribution and from
time to time made the annual payments directed by the Will and also set aside the surplus
profits. This sum was invested in securities which only amounted to 5K. The legacies that
William had made amounted to 6k. The Will was then administered by the Court and a
liquidator appointed. Sarah died at 3 Sandycove Avenue on 8 Aug 1908.

Meldon at St Joseph’s Church, Kingstown on 21 Nov 1894. James was the son of
Charles Henry Meldon.

7 Benjamin Howard Colclough born 1 Feb 1887 at Cliff House, Dalkey joined the Merchant
Navy and received a medal for service during WW1. He was unmarried living at 64
Carlton Street, West Hartlepool, Durham in 1921 and died 18 Jun 1936 at Durham.
8 Sarah Matilda Colclough 30 Jun 1888 at Cliff House, third surviving daughter married
Robert Aipin Wright at St Bartholomew’s Church on 20 Feb 1915. Robert was with the
RAMC and the fifth son of Wm McDowell Wright.
9 Frances Dorothy (Mabel) Colclough born 1 Dec 1891 at Cliff House married Michael
D’Alton at Dalkey Parish Church on 9 Jan 1918. Michael was a lieutenant in the Army
Service Corps and the son of Michael D’Alton, solicitor.
10 Frederick Cecil Colclough born 24 Aug 1893. As last surviving son he died a bachelor on
26 Apr 1967 at Monkstown Hospital late of 3 Clarinda Park, Dun Laoghaire and was
buried at Deansgrange.
8 Stedman Colclough born 31 Mar 1853 was an architect and engineer. He married Jane
(Jeannie) McDonnell on 11 Aug 1880 at the Registrar’s Office, Limerick. Jeanie was the
daughter of Patrick McDonnell, a farmer. They were living in Cheetham, Prestwich,
Lancashire in 1881 and were back in Dublin in 1885 where Stedman is listed as living at
Mountpleasant. In 1862 Stedman was listed as a Rate Collector of 57 Dame Street.
Stedman died 15 May 1895 at 60 Rathmines Road.
1 Blanche Evaline Colclough born 5 Apr 1891 at 75 Rathgar Road died a spinster at
Harold's Cross Hospice late of Rathgar Avenue.
2 Vivian Rossborough Colclough born 21 Sep 1893 at 60 Rathmines Road died

11 Howard John Colclough born 2 Feb 1859 was educated at Southport College, Lancashire.
He entered Trinity College Dublin at the age of 16 in 1875, graduated BA 1878 and MA
1881. He took Holy orders, was ordained priest in 1883 and appointed to the curacy of St
Andrew's Dublin. He was rector of St Thomas in Edinburgh from 1895 to 1919 and
subsequently vicar of St George’s Worthing, Chichester from 1919. He married Matilda
McClure on 18 Sep 1883 at Holy Trinity Church, Southport. Matilda was the third daughter
of Samuel McClure of Laurel Mount, Dumfries. Matilda aged 67 died 9 Oct 1923 and was
buried at Broadwater Cemetery in Worthing.

Howard secondly married Evelyn Hephie Cox on 20 Apr 1925 at Emmanuel Church, Maida
Vale. Hepie was the daughter of Alfred Cox, architect and Hephzibah Elizabeth Squirrell of
Southampton. The couple had four children. Hepie Howard retired in 1931 and died
24 Jun 1946 at the Isle of Wight.
