A former Fine Gael TD is trying to establish links between his family and US President-elect Donald Trump's controversial chief strategist who said he likes being compared to Satan.
The family of James Bannon, who was a TD for nine years, have tasked genealogists with establishing if they have ancestral connections with Stephen Bannon - the right-wing commentator who steered Mr Trump to victory.
The Longford-Westmeath politician believes Mr Bannon could be a descendant of his great uncle who emigrated to the United States in the last century.
Mr Bannon confirmed his family were seeking to establish if there were links with Mr Trump's key adviser but said he was reluctant to comment until the genealogy work is completed.
He said there are a "lot of good Irish Catholic Bannons in America" and there is "a lot of Bannons in Longford and they are all related".
Bannon's appointment to Mr Trump's White House transition team sent shockwaves through the US political establishment.
Mr Bannon is the CEO of alt-right website Breitbart which produces divisive articles on immigration.
In an interview last week, he said he likes being compared to Satan as it shows liberals and the media do not understand the rise of Trump.
