Council hopes that GRAVEYARDS will help boost tourism in Ireland
Leitrim County Council will kickstart work on creating a map of their old cemeteries this year, so people can easily find where their relatives are buried.
While our tourism board work hard to utilise assets like our rich history, beautiful scenery and diverse culture, Leitrim is getting a little help from beyond the grave.
Independent Councillor Enda Stenson claimed that people trying to trace their roots is a booming business and could be a shot in the arm for the county.
He explained yesterday: “As in a lot of counties in Ireland, Leitrim has a number of old graveyards.
“It’s not just that headstones might be faded but some don’t even really have a marker.
“Then you have people coming here from places like England or America who are looking for where their family are buried and nobody can tell them.
“They very much have to rely on local knowledge.” Read more
