Barrington family of Eden Park
Richard William Barrington of Eden Park was the son of Daniel Barrington and the grandson of Sir
Joseph Barrington of Limerick who was one of the founders of Barrington’s hospital in Limerick
which played an important role in the improving the lot of the sick during the cholera outbreak in
1832. It provided 60 beds at a time when there was about 12 fatalities a day in Limerick from
the disease.
Joseph Barrington was born in 1764 the son of Matthew Barrington and Jane the daughter of John
Canter of Ballyvara. The family business was clock making. He was made a Baronet by patent in
1831.

1 Matthew Barrington eldest son was born in 21 May 1788. He became a lawyer and
married Charlotte the daughter of William Hartigan of Dublin, medical doctor and
professor of anatomy at Trinity, on 1 Jan 1814 at St Georges Parish Church. Matthew
was the successor to the Baronetcy (2nd Baronet) and was responsible for the
construction of an iron bridge over the River Mulcair, (Mulkear) which was called
'Barrington's Bridge'. He was proposed for parliament but his reply was : 'l shall
continue as a citizen to do all in my power to further the objects which I have always had
at heart - The improvement of my native City - The Employment of its population – and
the relief of its distressed people’. Charlotte died 18 Nov 1858 and Matthew died
31 Mar 1861 age 72 at 32 Upper Pembroke Street, the home of his daughter Josephine.
Both were interred in the family vault at St Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick.
1 William Hartigan Barrington born 4 Oct 1815 married Elizabeth Olivia Darley on
14 Mar 1859 at St Peters, Dublin, Olivia was born at Beaufield Stillorgan and
baptised at Stillorgan on 26 Jan 1834. She was the daughter of Henry Darley and
Maria West of Beaufield, Stillorgan and Wingfield. William became the 3rd Baronet.
On Sir Williams death in 1872 - Glenstal Castle passed to his brother Croker
Barrington.
2 Croker Barrington second son born 2 Jul 1817. He was a barrister, and was head
of the legal firm Messrs Barrington & Son, solicitors to the Great Southern and
Western Railway Company. He married Anna Felicia West, daughter of John Beatty
West of Mount Anville and 80 Stephen's Green on 12 Apr 1845 at St Peter's Church.
Anna was buried under the wreckage of the 1853 train crash at Straffan and her
Croker saved her. Croker became 4th Baronet in 1872. Lady Anna died in June
1873 and Croker died on 4 Jul 1890 at his residence, Glenstal Castle, Murroe.
1 Charles Burton Barrington eldest son was born in 1848 in Limerick. He was
educated at St Columba’s College, Rugby School and Trinity College. An
accomplished rower and rugby player he is credited with being the father of
Irish rugby.
2 Olivia Maria Barrington born circa 1851 married Rev Canon Lewen Burton
Weldon on 13.06.1871 at St Stephen’s Church, Dublin. Olivia died
15 Apr 1921 at Fitzwilliam, Dublin.
3 Mary Anne Barrington (Marian) eldest daughter married Thomas Williams of
Drumcondra Castle at Wicklow Church in September 1841. Marian died in 1858.
4 Charlotte Barrington married Harry Barry, a barrister and died in January 1861.
5 Olivia Barrington, married Hon George Augustus Chichester May in 1853. She died
in 1876. They had ten children, including George Chichester May, General Sir Edward
Sinclair May, and Sir Francis Henry May, Governor of Hong Kong.
6 Josephine Barrington married Hewitt Poole Jellett son of Rev Morgan Jellett on
7 Aug 1859 at Abington Church, Limerick.
7 Henrietta Victorine Barrington married William B Lefanu and died 29 Jul 1899.

of Drumcondra Castle in October 1829 at St Andrew’s Church, Dublin. He was Clerk of
the Crown for the county of Limerick. He died on 5 Feb 1842 at Drumcondra 1842 and
was interred in the family vault at St Marys Cathedral, Limerick. He was land agent to
The Count de Salis and to B Oliver Gascoigne, the Earl of Limerick. Anne Moved to Herbert
Street in Limerick after the death of her husband. She died at 18 Victoria Road, Charlton,
the home of her son on 5 Feb aged 84.

Mackinnon of the 87th Royal Irish Fusiliers on 29 Nov 1866 at Nenagh.

4 Mary Anne Charlotte Barrington second daughter born Feb 1835 married John only son
of John Bayly of Tipperary on 3 Sep 1857 at St Peter’s Church, Dublin.
5 Richard William Barrington second son born circa 1837 married Henrietta Maria
Jane Johnstone, the daughter of John Johnstone of Halleaths, Dumfriarshire, on
30 October 1873. Richard was a partner in the firm of W M Taylor of Francis Street a
Tobacco Merchant with William Frederick and John Eustace Jameson. Richard and
Henrietta lived in Richview, Clonskeagh in 1879. They moved to Eden Park in 1884.
Henrietta was the ‘Hostess with the mostess’, organising parties in the magnificent
ballroom at Eden Park. She was renowned for her Cinderella parties, juvenile parties
and children's parties. She also arranged fairs and cafes in the Mansion House and
famed for her ‘at homes’ with tennis and croquet the games on offer. Henrietta
moved to Shropshire in 1923 and died at Surrey on 21 Mar 1932 and left an estate
of 14K. They had 4 children. Richard died at Llandudno on 15 Oct 1900 aged 63.
1 John Lawrence Barrington born 1877. A bachelor, died of pneumonia at
Ross’s Hotel on 31 Oct 1918 and was buried at Taney, Dundrum.
2 Richard Irving Williams Barrington born 21 May 1892 was a tobacco
merchant married Constance Elizabeth Mary Manders, the daughter of Harry
Manders of Carlisle Tce, Malahide at Christchurch, Kingstown on 6 Apr 1922.
He died at Strawberry Hill in Dalkey on 20 Nov 1928.
3 Alice Henrietta Barrington born 3 Aug 1874 at 21 Kildare Street married
William Keswick of Surrey at Taney on 6 Jul 1898. The reception was held at
the Shelbourne and on the lawn at Eden Park. Comment was passed as to the
age of the bride, her husband being nearly 40 years her senior. William, MP
for Epsom died 1912 leaving an estate valued at over 500K. Alice secondly
married Cyril Cameron Pyke on 4 Sep 1915 at St Mary's, Mortlake. Cyril
was a retired Colonial civil servant and the son of Thomas Pyke of Stanhope
Gardens, London. Cyril was a year older than Alice.
4 Helen Lucy Johnstone Barrington on 28 Aug 1879 at Richview. She made her
debut in 1898 and her mother arranged a party at Eden Park. She played for
Dundrum Hockey Club was an international Hockey player for Ireland in 1898.
Her godfather was Sir R Jardine. She married John Molesworth Staples of
Baggot Street the son of the late Major General Staples on 26 Apr 1905 at
Taney Church and moved to 15 Raglan Road

4 Honoria Barrington married Thomas Lloyd of Limerick in 1827 and died in 1828.
5 Croker Barrington Lieutenant in the Royal Navy.

9 Joseph Barrington youngest son born circa 1803 died October 1833 age 30 at Barrington’s

Corpus Christie College, Oxford at St Peters in February 1838.
11 Mary Ann Barrington died 1829.
