John Wynne born circa 1800. He was a Captain in the Royal Horse Artillery. He married Anne Warren at
All Saint’s, Southampton on 31 May 1838. Anne was the third daughter of Rear Admiral Sir Samuel
Warren, CB KCH. John was agent to Viscount Massereen and in charge of the Collon estate. In 1850 he
parted company with the Viscount and was presented with an address by the tenantry thanking him for
his kindness to them and to the fact that no tenant had been evicted. The address was signed by 235 of
the tenantry and by the Parish Minister and Parish Priest. He replied thanking them and that he deplored
the extreme poverty suffered and regretted that it was not in his power to do more. He then worked for
Henry Sydenham Singleton as agent. In 1867 the household furniture etc of Collon House was put up for
auction by John Wynne and Alfred H Wynn took up residency there. John and Anne moved to Roebuck
House in 1868 and renamed it Wynnstay. Ann died at Wynnstay on 24 Nov 1874 and John died
23 Jun 1884 at same place.

3 Warren Richard Colvin Wynn eldest surviving son born 9 Apr 1843 at Collon House, Co Louth.
He married Eleanor Turbett on 30 Jul 1872 at Christ Church, Taney. Eleanor was the seventh
daughter of James Exfam Purefoy Turbett and Sophie Turbett of Owenstown House.
Eleanor died aged 24 on 14 Dec 1873 and a memorial was erected at St Thomas’ Church, Foster
Avenue. Warren secondly married Lucy Parish on 1 Feb 1876 at Stoke C hurch, Guildford. Lucy
was the eldest daughter of Captain Alfred Paris, RNR. Warren entered the service in 1862 and
having served in various locations was appointed adjutant at Gibraltar. On his return he was
posted to the Ordnance Survey. In December 1878 he was called up to the Royal Engineers in
Natal. He died from fever on his birthday 9 Apr 1879 on the banks of the Tungela River a few
days after the relief of Ekowe and was buried at Fort Tendos. He was commanding the
detachment of Royal Engineers attached to Colonel Pearson’s Column. He was survived by his
wife Lucy and three children. A book Widow-making War: Life and Death of a British Officer in
Zululand was produced based on his letters and diaries in 1995.
4 Arthur Singleton Wynne, third son born 5 Mar 1846 in Co Louth was ensign by purchase in
1863. He married Emily Mary Turner in 1886. Emily was the daughter of Charles Colville
Turner of East Gate, Wartrop. He served in the South African War with the 51st Light Infantry
and was mentioned three times in despatches. He was promoted from Military Secretary to
the Secretary of State for War and attained the rank of General. He was appointed keeper of
the Jewel House at the Tower of London by the King, later Governor of the Tower of London.
He retired from the Army in 1913 and died on 6 Feb 1936 in London.
5 Skeffington John Wynne born 1 Jan 1849 at Collon House married Emily Janet Lloyd on
20 Aug 1875 at Llanaber Church, Barmouth, Wales. Emily was the daughter of B C Lloyd and
Skeffington was with the 103rd Fusiliers. Col Skeffington Wynne, late Royal Dublin Fusiliers
died 29 Nov 1913 at Frimley Green, Surrey. Emily died 27 May 1931 at Rushmere, St Andrews
aged 80.
6 Sydenham Henry Wynne born 15 Feb 1851 at Collon House, Co Louth joined the Indian Civil
Service in 1871. In 1879 he was promoted from Acting Head Assistant, to be Vice President
of the Local Fund Board, Trichinopoly Circle. He married Elizabeth Whittaker on 6 Dec 1892 at
St Mary the Virgin, Dover. Eliza was the daughter of Edmund Whittaker. He secondly married
Mary Kate (Mary Kitty) Lee on 4 Mar 1899 at St Mathias’ Church at Kensington. Mary Kitty was
the daughter of James Hall Lee of Halstead, Essex. By 1901 Henry had retired and was living at
Brighton, Sussex. In 1911 they were living at Stanage, Knighton, Radnorshire, Wales. Sydenham
died 28 Dec 1942 in Monaco. Mary died on 15 Jun 1957 in France.
1 Robert Henry Skeffington Wynne only child born 14 Dec 1899 at 46 Earl’s Court
Square, London. He was with the 9th Lancers. He married Alice (Norma) de
Rougemont in 1928 at East Grinstead, Sussex. Norma was the only child of Charles
G de Rougemont of Oakfield, Forrest Row, Sussex. He secondly married Judith A G
Cohen in 1936. Robert died on 20 Sep 1966.
7 Florence Anne Wynne born 7 Oct 1853 at Collon House.
8 Charles Wynne born 18 Apr 1856 at Collon House was a medical doctor. He died 5 Dec 1889
at Tottenham.
9 Frances Octavia Caroline Wynn youngest daughter born 10 Dec 1859 at Collon House, Co
Louth married John Albert Robert son of John Jameson Robertson of Gledswood on
29 Jun 1881 at St Mathias’, Dublin.
