Stephen Woulfe Flanagan born 4 Aug 1816 in Kildare to Terence Flanagan and Joanna Woulfe. His
mother was sister to Arthur Wolfe, 1st Viscount Kilwarden KC Lord Chief Justice of Ireland who had
been assassinated during the Irish rebellion of 1803.
Stephen married Mary Corballis, eldest daughter of John Corballis on 17 Feb 1851 at St Andrews,
Westland Row, Dublin. He was appointed a Poor Law Inspector for Ireland in 1847, he was Secretary
to the Incumbered Estates Commissioners until 1850 when he was appointed commissioner. He was
a Privy Councillor, a judge of the landed estates court and owner of 3,500 acres in Sligo and
Roscommon as well as property in Dublin. Mary died on 8 Jan 1886 and was buried at Glasnevin.
Stephen died 6 Jan 1891 and was buried at Glasnevin Cemetery in the O’Connell circle. He left 23K in
personal estate.
1 John Woulfe Flanagan eldest son born 6 Apr 1852 at 10 Herbert Street, was educated at
Oscott and Balliol College, Oxford He graduated BA in classics in 1876 and was called to the
English bar in 1877. He practised only briefly in England and in 1886 he joined the staff of The
Times in London, a job he retained until his death. He was living at 21 Tedworth Square,
Chelsea in 1891. He married Maria Emily Sheil, daughter of Major General Sir Justin Sheil
and niece of Richard Lalor Sheil on 29 Apr 1880. She was his second cousin, her mother,
Mary, being the daughter of a Stephen Woulfe, a judge. John died in November 1929.

2 Stephen Woulfe Flanagan, second son born 14 Feb 1854 at 10 Herbert Street was educated at
Oscott and Trinity College, Dublin. He married Eleanor Emly Gertrude MacTernan, third
daughter of Hugh MacTernan, J P and D L of Heapstown, County Sligo, and Mount Allen, County
Leitrim on 19 Oct 1898 at Sligo. He was a land agent and JP and lived at Lecarrow Lodge, Boyle,
Roscommon. He died 28 Jan 1940 at Rosemount and Eleanor died 27 Feb 1940 at Rosemount.
1 Stephen Hugo James Woulfe Flanagan born 9 Feb1900 at 10 Holles Street joined the Royal
Indian Army Service Corps and attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He died 19 Dec 1942
and is commemorated on Madras War Cemetery, Chennai.

Kensington on 17 Nov 1892 at St Mary’s Cadogen Street, London. He was a Physician And
Surgeon. By 1911 he had retired and was living at Wapping.

7 James Woulfe Flanagan fourth son born 27 Jan 1864, a resident magistrate at Newry, Co Down,
was shot dead there by assassins on 4 Jun 1922 as he was leaving Sunday mass at the Roman
Catholic Cathedral. He was a staunch Catholic but remained a firm opponent of Irish home rule.

9 Richard John Woulfe Flanagan born 24 Aug 1868 at 20 Fitzwilliam Place, joined the army and
attained the rank of Colonel. He was retired and single living in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent,
England in 1939 with his brother Edward. He died at Tunbridge well on 22 Jun 1955.
10 Frances Mary Flanagan fourth daughter born 21 Sep 1869 at 20 Fitzwilliam Place. She was a
great horsewoman and drowned in Lough Arrow on 4 Jul 1898 when visiting her brother
Stephen at Lecarrow.
11 Edward Martyn Woulfe Flanagan born 14 Sep 1870 joined the army and attained the rank of Lt. Col.
He was retired and single living in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England in 1939 with his brother
Richard.
12 Elizabeth Gertrude Woulfe Flanagan born 26 Oct 1874 died a spinster at Tunbridge Wells on
16 Sep 1939.
