James Whitney born circa 1856 in Co Wexford. He was the son of Thomas Whitbey and Harriet
Deacon of Gurrawn House, Killane, Co Wexford. James married Fannie Bennett, daughter of George
Bennett on 12.05.1877 at the Presbyterian Church, Kingstown. He was a land steward, dairy farmer
and later proprietor of Frankfort Dairy farm. In 1884 his father died, and his brother John Frederick
took over the farm at Gurrawn. In 1901 the family were living in Kilmallock and by 1909 they were
living at Harlech in Roebuck. They had nine children of whom seven survived in 1911. Frances died
06.04.1928 at Harlech. James died 01.04.1935 at Harlech, he was survived by his brothers, Sir Alfred
Whitney in Melbourne & F Whitney in Meldon, Surrey and by one daughter and four sons.
1 Frances Harriet Whitney eldest daughter born 15.07.1878 at Racefield Lodge, Kingstown
married Henry James Exley eldest son of Edmund Exley of Leixlip on 06.09.1904 at St Mary’s
Church, Dublin.
1 Frances Muriel Exley born 12.07.1907 at 42 Belvedere Place, Dublin was staying with her
grandparents in Roebuck in 1911.
2 George Alfred Whitney born 16.10.1879 at Malahide married Elizabeth Loftus twin daughter of
late John Loftus of Drumherriff House, Dungannon, Tyrone on 14.03.1939 at St Thomas’ Church,
Fosters Avenue, Dublin. They had a least two children and they were living at 5 Harlech Villas
in 1940 and George running a dairy at Harlech. He rented out Harlech house and it was for sale
in 1948.
3 James Arthur (Arthur James) Whitney 2nd son born 17.02.1881 at Shelton, Wicklow. He married
Eveleen (Evelyn) Kirwan at Anglesey, Wales in 1913 and the moved to Morton Street in Clonmel
where Arthur was a cinema proprietor. Arthur was later manager of the Coliseum Picture House
in Waterford but was working in Dublin by 1933. He held a lease on Rockfield House from 1940
to 1942 where he ran a dairy. He died 12.11.1942 at his residence 31 Claude Road, Drumcondra
and was buried at Mount Jerome. Eveleen was buried at Deansgrange.

4 Charlotte Matilda born 10.02.1884 at Shelton, Wicklow living at Roebuck in 1911.
5 Thomas Henry Whitney born 14.02.1885 at Shelton, Wicklow died at Mount Coote on 14.09.1893.
6 Lucy May Whitney born 03.05.1889 at Shelton, Wicklow married Samuel Oliver Williamson of Abbey
Quay, Enniscorthy son of David Williamson on 18.07.1917 at Taney Church. Samuel an architect
died at Harlech on 2 Nov 1918 aged 32. Lucy secondly married Philip Augustus Jeffares, an
engineer and youngest son of the late Isaac Jeffares, New Ross on 21.07.1924 at Taney Church,
Dundrum. They lived at Rosbercon in New Ross where Philip died from flu on 11 Jul 1925 aged
53. Lucy had at least two children and ran Harlech as a nursing home from 1932. In 1945 she
closed the nursing home and leased the house to the Latchman brothers. In 1947 she
obtained a court order to remove them as the house had not been maintained. Packs of dogs
were being kept in the house, doors had been chewed, railings broken and the body of a bus
was parked on the lawn. Lucy died on 27 Jan 1949 at the Royal City of Dublin Hospital late of
The Cottage, Roebuck. She was buried at Mount Jerome.
7 John Frederick Whitney born circa 12.01.1892 Wicklow, married Eileen Sydney Hosford at Taney
Church on 18.07.1917. Eileen was the daughter of Samuel Hosford, a manager at Phoenix and
Standing. John was a dairy farmer and was living at Moorefield Cottage, Roebuck in 1920.
1 John Frederick Hosford Whitney born 07.03.1920 at Grove Avenue, Dublin.
8 Albert Thomas (Bertie) Whitney born 16.12.1896 at Mount Coote, Kilmallock, Limerick living at
Roebuck in 1911. He married Sheila Byrne in 1941 and they lived in Dun Laoghaire.
