Thomas Trench, second son of the Dean of Kildare the Rev Thomas Trench and cousin
of the Archbishop of Dublin, Richard Chenevix Trench was born circa 1791. He was a
Lieutenant in the Royal Horse Artillery from 1808 to 1818. He married Catherine Croasdaile,
youngest daughter of Richard Croasdaile of Rynn at Rosanalis on 5 June 1826. They lived at
Millicent near Clane. Thomas took the name and arms of Cooke by letters patent in 1850
and became Thomas Trench Cooke. Thomas' sister Frances married George Francis
Pomeroy. Thomas died on 25 Mar 1851 and Caroline and her daughters moved to
Trimleston. Catherine died 4 Feb 1871 at Merrion.
1 Elizabeth Jane Trench born 1 Apr 1827 died 7 Sep 1836.
2 Maria Trench born 19 Apr 1828 in Queens County. She attended Alexandra College
where she studied Latin and was fluent in German. She was an author, mainly
biographies. Her books include Letters and Memorials of Archbishop Trench, The
Life of St Teresa, Story of the Gospels, The story of Dr Pusey's life and a biography of
Charles Lowder. She also produced a translation of the passion play performed every
10 years at Oberammergau in Germany. She lived at Lisaniskea from 1873 until
her death. In 1900 she was a founder member together with the Countess of
Aberdeen, and Hon Sec for Ireland to the Soldiers and Sailors Help Society. The
Countess was a regular visitor to Lisaniskea. Maria died at LisanIskea on 20 Jul 1917
aged 89.
3 Thomas Richard Frederick Trench, eldest son born 18 August 1829, educated at Rugby
and Trinity College, Dublin. He became Thomas Trench Cooke when his father took the
name and arms of Cooke in 1850. Thomas took the additional name Trench in 1858 and
became Thomas Cooke Trench. He married Caroline Elizabeth Heathcote, eldest daughter
of Rt Hon Sir William Heathcote of Herts at Hursley on 17 Aug 1858 at Bath. He was
involved in the restoration of St Brigid’s in Kildare and High Sheriff for Co Kildare. He
manged to buy Millicent by 1867 through the land commission as his father only rented
it. He was left property and land in Westmeath but it was in a dilapidated state so he
rented out Millicent and moved into a cottage on the estate in Co Westmeath with his
wife, organised the land and built labourers cottages, then sold it to Lord Castlemaine
and was back in Millicent by 1876. In 1881 the vestry passed a resolution to build a new
church following a proposal by Thomas Cooke Trench that he would donate the land and
most of the cost for the build. The vestry agreed and construction on the site of St
Michael and All Angels began on the same day, 20 Jun 1881. The church was consecrated on
Michaelmas day 29 Sept 1883 by Bishop Richard Chevenix Trench, Archbishop of Dublin
and 'cousin' of Thomas Cooke Trench. Thomas was a JP and DL and died at Millicent on
25 Nov 1902. He was laid to rest in the Churchyard under the East window of the church he
erected. Caroline moved to Thomas Street in Dublin and died there in Dec 1910 and was
buried with her husband.

5 Catherine Louisa (Kate) Trench, born 10 Mar 1832 as second daughter married Alexander
Richard Kirkpatrick son of William Kirkpatrick of Donacomper, near Celbridge on
29 Aug 1854. Alexander died at Donacomper on 17 Feb 1891 aged 77. Catherine died
15 Oct 1910 at Donacomper.
1 Elizabeth Mary (Mary) Kirkpatrick born circa 1856 married Hayford Douglas Thorold,
a Lieutenant in the 76th Regiment at Leixslip C of I on 26 Dec 1883. Mary died in 1940.
2 William Trench Kirkpatrick born 1 Aug 1857 at Monkstown died a bachelor at
Donacomper on 10 Apr 1941 aged 83.
3 Ivone Kirkpatrick born May 1860 at Pembroke Street joined the South Staffordshire
Regiment. Captain Kirkpatrick married the Hon Mary Frances Hardinge, second daughter
of the late Hon Sir Arthur Hardinge and maid of honour to Queen Victoria at Windsor
Roman Catholic Church on 17 Jul 1894. Ivome died in Essex in 1936.
4 Alexander Thomas Kirkpatrick born 10 Jun 1861 at Donacomper took Holy orders and
died at Priestgarth in Essex in 1933.

7 Louis Kirkpatrick born 7 Jul 1839 at Donacomper.
6 Jane Trench a twin born 3 May 1835 in Queen's County. She lived at Lisaniskea from 1873 until
her death. She was a co-founder of St John’s House of Rest on Merrion Road in 1873 and was
the manager and lady superintendent until 1911. She died 11 Sep 1919 at Lisaniskea.
7 Frances (Fanny) Trench a twin born 3 May 1835 in Queens County. She lived at Lisaniskea from
1873 until her death. She was the Hon Treasurer of St John’s Home of Rest on Merrion Road,
from its foundation. She also, in partnership with Blackrock’s parish priest, set about opening a
small factory where women were taught to weave straw envelopes for wine bottles. She died a
spinster on 7 Feb 1923 aged 87 at Lis an Iskea.
