Bryan Stapleton born circa 1747 admitted Kings Inns and sworn in as an attorney in Nov 1768
to the court of the exchequer. He married Frances Fitzgerald of Carlow on 23 Aug 1780, ML.
Frances was the widow of Stephen Fitzgerald with two sons under ten years. She was the
daughter of John Hovenden of Gurteen and his wife Mary Fitzgerald. Her sister Lanceletta
married John Tubbs. Bryan was an attorney of No 42 Golden Lane, Dublin in 1779 and 52
King Street, Stephen’s Green by 1783. His sister Sarah married Counsellor Jonathan Gregg at
Ennis in January 1789. He died 28 Jul 1799 and was buried in Stillorgan. His house at
Williamstown, Blackrock was put up for sale after his death. Frances died on 6 Feb 1804 and
was buried in Stillorgan. Within days her daughter Mary died as had her brother in law John
Tubbs.
1 Hovenden Stapleton first son born circa 1782 graduated Trinity and was admitted
Kings Inns. He had a colliery at Toulerton in Queen’s County in 1818. He married
Henrietta Harrisson at Clontarf on 9 Feb 1810. Hovenden of Towlerton, Queen’s
County was a JP and had to leave Towlerton for his personal safety in 1832. Hovenden
died 29 Apr 1838 at Buckingham Street. Henrietta died at 11 Buckingham Street on
11 Apr 1863 aged 75.
1 Ellen Stapleton born circa 1811 died at Tolerton Lodge, Queen’s County in
October 1828.
2 Letitia Stapleton youngest daughter born circa 1826. She married Frederick
George Deverell, a civil engineer on 11 Sep 1847 at St Thomas’ Church. Frederick
was the son of William Deverell and later surveyor of Cavan. They had seven
children. George died 8 Dec 1890 and was buried at Deansgrange. Letitia died
8 Jun 1911 at 2 Leinster Villas, Glenageary and was buried with her husband.
1 Susan Eva Grome Deverell born 23 Sep 1870 in Cork died a spinster and
was buried at Deansgrange.
2 Mary Stapleton born 1784 died 6 Feb 1804 at Holles Street and was buried in Stillorgan.
3 Letitia Stapleton married Henry Dawson in 1807.
