Stanford family of Blackrock and Dundrum
William Stanford was a woollen merchant at 33 Lower Sackville Street, Dublin, and held property in Co
Cavan. He married Sarah McMullen, daughter of James McMullen, King's Counsel in 1800. Sarah died
in 1846.
1 William Henry Stanford, born circa 1801 at Dublin. William was educated at Trinity College
Dublin and graduated BA in 1827 and took Holy orders and graduated MA in 1839. He was
ordained Deacon by the Bishop of Kildare on 25 Feb 1827, and Priest by the Bishop of Meath on
10 Jun 1827. He was Curate of Slane until November 1829, and Curate of Maynooth from that
date until May 1832. He married Esther Katharyn Peter in St. Ann's Church, Dublin, on
1 Oct 1833. Esther was the daughter of David Peter of Stephen’s Green. He was Curate at
Birmingham and of St Mary's, Lancaster. He returned to Ireland, and was appointed Curate of
Bray by the Hon Rev William Plunket, then Rector of that parish. He was Curate of Stottesdon,
Hereford in 1835. In 1836, on the nomination of Archdeacon Torrens, he was appointed second
Curate of Taney with Rev Schoales, and after the resignation of the latter in the following year he
had sole charge of the parish. The family lived at Rosebank before moving to Frankfort Cottage
between Windy Arbour and Dundrum in 1848. He was appointed the first chaplain to the
Criminal Lunatic Asylum (Central Mental Hospital, Dundrum) by the Lord Lieutenant on
26 Nov 1850. He held Taney until it was disunited from the corps of the Archdeaconry in 1851,
and succeeded the Rev Bredin as Rector of Rincurran, Cork. He was presented with an
illuminated address and a purse of on his departure from the parish. He held Rincurran until his
death on 22 Feb 1856 at Rincurran. Esther died at Bushfield Avenue, Rathgar on 8 Mar 1863.
1 William Henry Nassau Stanford eldest son born circa 1834 baptised at St Ann’s, Dublin.
He graduated MB from Trinity. He married Merelina Frances Tindal on 3 Jul 1866 at
Donnybrook parish Church. Marelina was the daughter of the Rev Nicholas Tindal, Vicar
of Sandhurst, Gloucester and was living at Rathmines at the time of her marriage. They
lived at The Cottage, Shankhill. William a surgeon and medical practitioner died at
Strandvilla, Bray 13 Nov 1871.
2 Bedell Stanford second son born circa 1837 baptised at Taney on 27 Aug 1837. He
graduated MA from Trinity and married Phoebe Thompson, daughter of Andrew Thompson
on 29 Sep 1868 at St Peter’s, Dublin. Phoebe was born in Co Fermanagh and was the
daughter of Andrew Thompson and was living at 26 Burlington Road, Dublin at the time of
her marriage. He took Holy orders and was ordained priest in 1868, curate of Castlerahan
1867-1869, Saint Luke’s Dublin 1869 -1882 and was assistant Chaplin at the Old Molyneux
Chapel for 1882. He was Curate of Saint Paul’s from 1886 to 1894. Beldell, last surviving
son died at 31 Garville Avenue, Rathgar on 4 Sep 1896.

3 Bedell Stanford born 23 Feb 1873 was educated at Charles Benson’s School,
Rathmines and graduated Trinity College BA in 1896, MA 1899 and was priested in
1899. He was a Freeman of the city by birth. He was Curate of St Kevin’s, Dublin
1897-1901 and Molyneux Chapel 1901-1904. He married Susan Jackson on
19 Jul 1902. Susan was the daughter of Thomas Jackson, a Timber Merchants
manager and was living at 14 Grantham Street. He was appointed curate of Coleraine
from 1904 to 1906 and appointed Rector of Carnlough in 1906 and then rector of
Holy Trinity Church Belfast from 1909 to 1915. He returned south in 1915 and was
curate of Waterford in 1915 and Cashel in 1922. His heath failed in 1931 and he
resigned and returned to Waterford to live. He was a keen musician and cousin to
Charles Villiers Stanford, Composer and Professor of Music. He died 5 Mar 1945 at
Cathedral Square in Waterford and his funeral was held at Christ Church. He was
buried in the Vault beneath St Michan’s Church.

2 Adela Constance Stanford born 29 Jun 1903 at Hume Street, parent residing at
31 Dartmouth Square married William Henry Joseph Bosanquet on 12 Jun 1945
at University Church, Dublin. William was the son of John Bosanquet, a farmer
and was living at Lake View Roseduff, Co Waterford.
3 Helen Maud Stanford 7 Aug 1906 at Drumourne, Larne, Antrim married Frank
Thompson Hewson at Brentford in 1934.
4 William Bedell Stanford born 16 Jan 1910, Senator and Greek Scholar died
30 Dec 1984. Regius professor of Greek in Trinity in 1940, a post that he held for
forty years till his retirement in 1980. He married Dorothy Isobel Wright on
21 Mar 1935 at St Anne’s Church Dublin. Dorothy was the daughter of James
Philips Evans Wright, a chemist and was living at Fitzwilliam Square at the time of
her marriage. William was appointed chancellor of the University of Dublin in
1981. He received an honorary doctorate from Queen’s University, Belfast shortly
before his death.
5 Marjory Kathleen Stanford born 31 Jul 1912 at Broomhill Avenue, Belfast.
6 Eileen May Stanford born 8 May 1914 at Belfast married Maurice Henry de Clerc
on 17 Jun 1939 at The Cathedral Waterford. Maurice was a botanist and the son of
Robert Maurice de Clerc, a retired medical practitioner.
3 Charles Edward Stuart Stanford, youngest son born circa 1838 married Fannie Box at St Stephen’s
Church Dublin on 19 Oct 1876. Fannie was the daughter of William Riddlesdale Box of St James’s
Terrace, Clonskeagh. Fanny died 4 Nov 1883 at 59 Upper Leeson Street. Charles an insurance
agent died 7 Dec 1887 at 19 Kildare Street.
4 Adelaide Esther Katharyne Stanford married John Hatchell Cooper on 1 July 1873 at St Mary’s
Church, Donnybrook. John was the son of the Rev Austin Cooper and was living at Dromore Co
Galway at the time if his marriage. Adelaide died at Killabolagh, Armagh on 24 Jul 1889.

5 Virginia Paulina Stanford 22 Aug 1840 at Rosebank near Dundrum, baptised at Taney Church. She
married Samuel Cooper, at St Peter’s Church, Dublin on 5 Sep 1872. Samuel was a clerk in the
Church Temporalities Office and the son of the Rev Austin Cooper. Samuel died 20 Mar 1892 at
51 Highfield Road, Rathgar.
2 Charles Stuart Stanford born circa 1805 married Pamela Louisa Campbell daughter of Guy
Campbell on 20 Jul 1841. He was curate of Glasnevin and was made a Canon of Christchurch in
1843. Charles was discharged as Vice Regal Chaplin by Lord Carlisle for proselytising. Charles
edited Plato’s Phaedo, 'Xenophon’s Anabasis' and was the editor of the Christian Examiner and
the Dublin University Magazine. He was rector of St Michan's from 1845 to 1854 before being
appointed as rector at St Thomas', Dublin. The family lived at Qui Si Sana in Blackrock in 1857/8.
Pamela died at 14 Merrion Square North on 1 Feb 1859 and was buried at Stillorgan graveyard.
1 Guy Howard Stanford born November 1842 baptised at Glasnevin married Julia Warner,
daughter of Chares Warner at Upton, Province of Quebec, Canada on 8 Nov 1873.
2 Pamela Charlotte Augusta Stanford, eldest daughter born 4 Jun 1844 at 2 Mespil
Parade died 10 May 1868 at Calais while returning to Ireland from Hyères, a southerly
resort and spa on the French Riviera. She was buried at Stillorgan graveyard.
3 Mary P G Stanford born circa 1847, living at Park Cottage, Thames Ditton, Kingston,
Surrey with three of her siblings in 1881. Sarah Mary Genevieve Stanford died a
spinster at Thames Ditton in 1908 and was buried at St Nicholas'.
4 Geraldine Harriette Campbell Stanford born circa 1848 married Charles James
Napier Fitzgerald third son of Sir Edward Fitzgerald Campbell at St Nicholas' Church,
Thames Ditton on 18 Feb 1889.
5 Lucy Frances Félicité Stanford born 27 Aug 1852 at Blackrock married Reginald Bean
Anderson, eldest son of Col Patrick Charles Anderson of the Royal Bengal Artillery at
Thames Ditton Parish Church on 22 Jan 1890.
6 Charles Edward Fitzgerald Stanford born circa 1855 at Blackrock was a preparatory
schoolmaster, living with his step mother Agnes at Friary Cottage, Culvers Close, St Michael,
Winchester, Hampshire in 1891. By 1901 he was Headmaster of Rottingdean Private
School, Lewes, Sussex.
7 Emily Helen Stanford, youngest daughter born circa 1857 married Edward Fitzgerald
Frederick, 2nd son of Sir Edward Fitzgerald Campbell on 4 Feb 1889 at St Nicholas'
Church, Thames Ditton.
Charles secondly married Agnes Fayle, third surviving daughter of the Rev Richard Fayle at
Torquay on 19 Jun 1866. Charles died 14 Jul 1873 at Surbiton, Surrey aged 65. Agnes died
7 Jun 1908 and both were buried at St Nicholas, Thames Ditton.
3 John James Stanford born circa 1810 married Mary Henn circa 1851. John was Examiner to the
Court of Chancery in Ireland and Clerk of the Crown for County Meath. Mary died in 1892 aged 75.
1 Charles Villiers Stanford born 30 Sep 1852 was a composer. He married Jennie Wetton in 1878.
He was a Professor of Music at Cambridge and composed in the region of 200 works including
seven symphonies. Jennie died in 1921 aged 65. Charles died on 29 Mar 1924 in London.
1 Geraldine Mary born circa 1883 died in 1956.
2 Guy Desmond Stanford born circa 1885 married Gwendolyn Dalrymple and died in 1953.
