Sinclair of Charleville, Newtownpark Avenue
William Sinclair (St Clair) born circa 1737 in Co Tyrone son of Robert St Clair. He was of
Ardgrea, Co Donegal and married Isabella Young. Isabella was the daughter of Thomas
Young of Lough Eske, Co Donegal. They were both deceased by 1792.
1 Rebecca Sinclair married John Decluzeau 17 Feb 1785 (ML).
2 James Sinclair eldest son born circa 1769 in Donegal. He was educated at
Trinity and admitted Kings Inns. He married Dorothea Law in 1805.
Dorothea was the daughter and heiress of Rev Samuel Law. James was a
magistrate for 50 years and resigned in 1843. He was president of the
Strabane Farming Society. Dorothea died 6 Nov 1864 aged 76. James died
18 Feb 1865 at Holyhill in his 96th year. He left 9K in personal estate.
1 William Sinclair eldest son born 17 Apr 1810 in Co Tyrone was educated
at Trinity and admitted Kings Inns. He was called to the Irish Bar in 1835.
he married Sarah Strode on 11 Dec 1839 at Tunbridge Wells. Sarah was
the daughter of James Cranbourne Strode, formerly of Shernfold Park,
Sussex. They lived Bonnyglen, Inver, Co Donegal.
1 James Montgomery Sinclair married Mary Everina Barton at
Pettigo Church on 29 Jan 1868. Mary was the daughter of Lieut
Col Hugh W Barton of Waterfoot, Co Fermanagh.
2 James Sinclair second son married Katherine Alexander on 4 Jun 1862 at
Aghadoey Parish Church. Katarine was the fourth daughter of the Rev
Robert Alexander, prebendary of Aghadoey.
3 Rebecca Sinclair born circa 1815 married her cousin James Sinclair on
8 Jul 1847 at Leckpatrick Church, Co Tyrone.
3 Thomas Sinclair second son born 6 Aug 1773 educated Trinity and admitted
Kings Inn. He married Alicia Young on 11 1801 (ML). Alicia was daughter of
Thomas Young of Lough Eske. Thomas, a barrister died in 1808.
1 Elizabeth Sinclair born circa 1802 died a spinster at Hyde Park,
London on 13 Jun 1876.
2 James Sinclair born circa 1803 joined HM Bombay Artillery. He served
in the expedition to the Persian Gulf under Sir William Kier Grant in
1819, he was present at various affairs with the Wahhabies, at the
siege and capture of Rus-el-Khyma and was engaged under Sir
Charles Napier in Lower Sindh in 1842 to 1843. He married his cousin
Rebecca Sinclair on 8 Jul 1847 at Leckpatrick Church, Co Tyrone.
Rebecca was the daughter of James Sinclair of Holyhill. Colonel James
died at Charleville, Newtownpark Avenue on 29 May 1861. Rebecca
died at Rosslyn, Alma Road, Monkstown on 18 Aug 1902 aged 87.
1 Alicia Elizabeth Sinclair only child born 29 Sep 1849 baptised at
Ahmednagar, in India. She married widower Thomas Wilson Fair
on 27 Aug 1903 at Inver Parish Church. Thomas was a shipping
official and the son of John Fair of Cartron, Ballina, Co Mayo.
Alfred R Sinclair R Col a witness. Alicia died 27 Apr 1905 at
Rosslyn, Alma Road. Thomas, a manager of the British & Irish
Steam Packet Company secondly married Violet Isabell Boyce on
8 Sep 1908 at St John’s Church, Sandymount. Violet was the
daughter of Joseph Wallace Boyce, MD of St Kilda, Blackrock.
Thomas died on 15 Apr 1919 at 77 Wellington Road, Donnybrook
aged 82.
