John Armstrong Rutledge born circa 1872 in Co Tyrone son of John Rutledge was a
commercial traveller in lace ironmongery. He was living at 11 Ashdale Road Terenure and
married Florence Anne Jessie Johnstone on 2 Apr 1909 at the Presbyterian Church in
Limerick. Florence was the daughter of Peter Johnstone, a veterinary surgeon and was
resident at Brunswick Street, Limerick. John became chairman of Rutledge and Thomson,
Corn Exchange Place, wholesale hardware merchants in 1919 and was at one time
chairman of the Irish Commercial Travellers’ Association. Florence died 23 Jan 1946 at
Grosvenor Road and John died 26 Sep 1965 at Grosvenor Road, their son Stanley the
informant. Both are buried at Mount Jerome.
1 David Johnstone Rutledge elder son born circa 1908 in Dublin died in a bathing
accident on 15 Aug 1925 at Ballinacarrig Strand, near Wicklow. His father tried to
save him but he too got into difficulty and was brought ashore unconscious. David
was buried at Mount Jerome.
2 Maureen Elizabeth Rutledge born 29 January 1911 at 2 Fortfield Terrace,
Rathmines died unmarried on 20 Jul 1957 at Dublin Fever Hospital, Clondalkin (Cherry
Orchard) and was buried at Mount Jerome.
3 John Stanley (Stanley) Rutledge born 6 Oct 1913 at 2 Fortfield Terrace was living at
61 Grosvenor Road, Rathgar. He married Olive Margaret (Peggy) Bolton on
6 Sep 1938 at Taney Church. Peggy was the daughter of Samuel Bolton, solicitor of
Trimbleston Lodge, Dundrum. Peggy wore silver lame and the bridesmaids wore
duckegg blue; the gowns were by Miss Croasdaile of Ely Place. The church was
decorated with gladioli and palms and they honeymooned in France. They had a
least three children.
Peggy was a Sylvan Dachshund breeder and won numerous competitions and awards.
She had kennels for 40 dogs at Annefield which she managed herself without help.
She was the hon treasure of the Dachshund club and became hon sec in 1949. Stanley
took part in car trials and Peggy was his co driver. He had a workshop at the back of
the house to rebuild and maintain cars. In 1953 Peggy organised the first ever dog
show at that Mansion House. She was assisted by her friend and fellow dog breeder;
Ursula, wife of Stanley Morgan Huet of The Cottage, Clonskeagh.
In 1955 Stanley was a member of the Leinster Motor Club and won the second trial
that year in a Ford Special. He was a director of Rutledge Thompson who were agents
for Zündapp motorcycles. By 1965 they were living at Ballyedmunduff. Peggy died
30 Dec 1975 aged 60 at “By the Trees”, Ballyedmonduff, Sandyford. She was buried at
Deansgrange.
