Huet family of South Hill
Walter Edward Huet, a dental surgeon died at Abbey Yard, Newry on 5 Apr 1890 aged 37.
Arthur Henry Huet Arthur born circa 1874 son of Walter Edward Huet a dental surgeon
and Matilda (Maud) Wilson Benner was baptised 18 Dec 1874 at Kendal, Westmorland.
The family were in Newry by 1878. One of 6 brothers he first began business in the
linen trade In Co Down. The story goes is that he visited Harvey Du Cros to sell him
linen as liners for tyres and that Harvey was so impressed with him, that he offered
him a job with Dunlop. He was commercial manager at Dunlop from 1899 and living in
Rathmines. He married Sophie Fairbrother on 22 Aug 1901 at Clontarf Parish Church.
Sophia was the daughter of John Fairbrother and was resident at St Lawrence Road,
Clontarf. Arthur was a manager of a cycle company living at Stillorgan Park in 1911 and
four of their six children had survived. Later he was a director of Dunlop Rubber
Company. They lived at Kerrimure from 1907 to 1910 and at the Grange until 1915
when Arthur was promoted, and in 1924 he was managing director of the Company and
they lived at Moorlands, Greystones. Arthur resigned from his position as MD of the
Dunlop Rubber Co (Ireland) Ltd and they moved to South Hill circa 1930. He was a
director of the Huet Motor Co, who became agents for Rolls Royce and was the
chairman towards the end of his life. The company was based at Clanwilliam House on
Mount Street Bridge and they also held franchises for Austin Rover, BMW and Volvo.
Arthur was president of the Irish Motor Traders Association. They put South Hill House
up for sale in 1942 and moved to Shrewsbury Road. Sophie died 19 Nov 1944 and was
buried at Deansgrange with her children Doreen and Henry. Arthur died at 8
Shrewsbury Road on 19 May 1951 and was buried with his wife. He left 35K in personal
estate.
1 Arthur Percival Huet born 12 March 1903 at St Lawrence Road, Clontarf married
Phyllis Nesta Taylor on 11 Jun 1929 at Bray Parish Church. Phyllis was the
daughter of Wentworth Taylor, MD. Arthur was a rep for the Dunlop Motor Co and
was resident at Seapoint Avenue. Arthur was an agent for the Rhode car and
started a motor sales company in 1930 with CW Fisher and traded as A P Huet &
Fisher at Clanwilliam House initially and later as Huet Motors. They lived at
Pembroke Lodge, Bray. His son Christopher would keep the family name in the
public memory trading as Christopher Huet Ltd at Windmill Lane.
2 Walter Desmond Huet (twin) born 30 Apr 1907 at Kerriemuir, Stillorgan died
18 Aug 1907.
3 Henry Dermot Huet (twin) born 30 Apr 1907 at Kerriemuir, Stillorgan married Daisy
Kesteven Lumley at Centenary Church, Stephen’s Green on 18 Sep 1936. Daisy was
the daughter of W H Lumley of the Haven, Sandycove. They lived at St Helen’s Wood,
Stillorgan Henry died 30 May 1974 at 52 Stillorgan Grove and was buried at
Deansgrange.
4 Muriel Elizabeth Sophie Huet born 6 April 1910 at Kerriemuir, Stillorgan. She married
John Herbert Taylor Stephenson at SS Philip and James Booterstown on 14 Sep 1935.
John was the only son of Herbert Holmes Stephenson of Osborne Park, Belfast.
5 Doreen Mary Huet (twin) born 13 June 1908 at Kerriemuir, Stillorgan died on
17 Jul 1908.
6 Kathleen Margaret Huet (twin) born 13 June 1908 at Kerriemuir, Stillorgan. She married
Alfred Walker (Terry) Hodgins on 14 Aug 1937 at SS Philip & James, Booterstown.
7 Sarah Ethel (Sadie) Huet born 31 March 1915 at The Grange, Kill ‘O the Grange. She
married William Denis Mitchell on 30 Aug 1941 at SS Philip & James. William was the
son of R N Mitchell of Therberton, Merrion.
