Mitchell Family of Lota
William Mansfield Mitchell eldest son of George Patrick Mitchell, a confectioner born
07.08.1842 in Dublin. He was an architect living at Clapham Villas and married Louisa Hoffe
on 09.07.1868 at St Peter’s Church, Dublin. Louisa born 23.08.1847 England was the daughter
of John and Louisa Hoffe of Fareham, Hampshire and Kenilworth Square. He attended
Wesley College and Nutgrove school in Rathfarnham. A talented architect, he served under
Woodward and Deane before setting up his own practice in 1867. He was in partnership with
John McCurdy before going into partnership with his sons in 1905. He was responsible for
designing many of the commercial buildings still extant in Dublin including Todd Byrnes and
the Metropole Hotel. He also designed the James Weir Home for Nurses with its unusual
loggia in Cork Street and the Masonic Female Orphan School in Ballsbridge. He was a
freemason and a member of the Royal Hibernia Academy. The family lived at Glenart from
1881 to 1887 and then moved to Lota on Cross Avenue where they resided until 1893. He was
President, Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland in 1905. William died 12 Mar 1910 at
Abbeyland, Killiney and Louisa died 13 Nov 1932 aged 82 at Winburn, Glenageary. Both are
buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Louisa Maude Mitchell eldest daughter born 11 May 1869 died 10 Dec 1888 at Lota,
Cross Avenue aged 19 years and was buried at Mount Jerome.
2 Sarah Edith Mitchell born circa 1872 in County Dublin.
3 Laura Gertrude Mitchell born 15 Jul 1873 at 14 Trafalgar Tce., Monkstown married
James Henry Webb 1897.
4 Charles Hoffe Mitchell born 14 Jun 1875 Trafalgar Tce., Monkstown followed in his
father's footsteps and became an architect. He enlisted and served with the 8 Battalion
Royal Irish Fusiliers. He married Mabel Broomfield in November 1919 in London. Mabel
was the daughter of Humphrey John Broomfield of Carlow.
5 Mabel Sophia Mitchell born 25 Feb 1876 died 3 Dec 1876 and was buried at Mount
Jerome.
6 Constance Emily Mitchell born 7 Aug 1878 at 14 Trafalgar Terrace, Monkstown died
29 Dec 1888 aged 10 years at Lota, Blackrock and was buried at Mount Jerome.
7 John Mansfield Mitchell born 1 Sep 1881 at Glenart, Stillorgan. He became an architect
and married Janet Turner Ross in 1912. John died 1957 and Janet died 1964.
8 Winifred Mitchell born 24 Feb 1885 at Glenart, Stillorgan.
