Peter Rooney born circa 1836 in County Wicklow married Bridget Ryan. He was a labourer at Fernhill
in 1874 and in 1901 he was living with his wife Bridget at Stillorgan and working as a bricklayers
labourer. They had John Shannon, a labourer living with them as a boarder. Bridget died at
Barnacullia on 16 Apr 1906 and Peter died 29 Sep 1906 also at Barnacullia.
1 Bridget Mary Rooney born 28 Feb 1874 at Fern Hill married John Joseph Doyle a grocer of
Barnaculia, Sandyford at Holy Cross Church Dundrum on 27 Feb 1900. John Joseph was the
son of Joseph Doyle, a grocer and Jane Smyth. Joseph’s six day licence as a publican was
renewed later that year. This is presumably the Blue Light Pub which was established around
1870. Its name is thought to have it's origins from the smuggling trade, and local lore has it
that on receiving a signal from the docks, that customs officers had signed off for the evening,
the pub would light an old ship’s blue lantern which would signal that ‘the coast was clear’.
John was also a farmer and stone cutter and died in a quarry rockfall accident at Barnacullia on
28 Aug 1908 in which his nephew Patrick Downes also died.
By 1911 Bridget was a widow with three children and she was living at the pub with her sister in
law Ellen who became the licensee in 1906. By 1913 Messrs D’Arcy and sons, Brewers had a
mortgage on the pub, but Ellen managed to renew the licence.
1 Bridget Doyle born 17 Aug 1900 at Barnacullia.
2 Joseph Doyle born 4 Aug 1902 at Barnacullia.
3 Jane Mary (Janet) Doyle born 2 Jul 1904 at Barnacullia
Bridget secondly married Edward Ryan, a stone cutter from Barnacullia and son of Christopher
Ryan, a harness maker at Sandford RC Church on 20 Nov 1911.
4 Christopher Ryan born 31 Oct 1912 at Barnaculia.
