Peter Rooney born circa 1836 in County Wicklow married Bridget Ryan. He was a labourer
and worked at Fern Hill as a labourer from 1864 to 1876. They were still living in Sandyford
in 1895. In 1901 he was living in Stillorgan with his wife Bridget and working as a bricklayers
labourer. They had John Shannon, a labourer who he worked with in Fern Hill was living
with them as a boarder. Bridget died at Barnacullia on 16 Apr 1906 and Peter died
29 Sep 1906 also at Barnacullia.
1 Peter Rooney born circa 1863 in Co Dublin. He was a coachman working at Hollyville
and married Catherine Coleman on 23 Jul 1895 at Booterstown Church. Catherine
was living at Anavilla, Newtownpark and the daughter of Peter & Elizabeth Coleman.
Her father was a herd and Kate worked as a seamstress. Kate died at 2 Anavilla Ave
on 27 Dec 1903 aged 30 and was buried at Deansgrange. Her mother Elizabeth the
informant. Peter died a widower at St Patrick's House, Dublin late of St Helen's, Lucan
where he worked as a groom on 7 Jun 1945. He was buried at Deansgrange.

8 Bridget Mary Rooney born 28 Feb 1874 at Fern Hill married John Joseph Doyle a grocer of
Barnaculia, Sandyford at Holy Cross Church Dundrum on 27 Feb 1900. John Joseph was the
son of Joseph Doyle, a grocer and Jane Smyth. Joseph’s six day licence as a publican was
renewed later that year. This is presumably the Blue Light Pub which was established around
1870. Its name is thought to have it's origins from the smuggling trade, and local lore has it
that on receiving a signal from the docks, that customs officers had signed off for the evening,
the pub would light an old ship’s blue lantern which would signal that ‘the coast was clear’.
John was also a farmer and stone cutter and died in a quarry rockfall accident at Barnacullia on
28 Aug 1908 in which his nephew Patrick Downes also died.
By 1911 Bridget was a widow with three children and she was living at the pub with her sister in
law Ellen who became the licensee in 1906. By 1913 Messrs D’Arcy and sons, Brewers had a
mortgage on the pub, but Ellen managed to renew the licence.

9 Catherine Mary born 18 Mar 1876 at Fern Hill baptised at Sandyford died at Little Newtown on
1 Apr 1876.
