Robert Stewart Kennedy born 17 Oct 1803 eldest son of Hugh Kennedy and Grace
Dorothea Hughes. He married Anne Catherine Ward on 5 Sep 1849 at Bangor
Parish church. She had twelve bridesmaids and they spent their honeymoon at
Saintfield House, Co Down - the residence of James Price. Anne was the only daughter
of Michael Edward Ward and Lady Matilda Stewart. They lived at Cultra, Co Down an
estate owned by the Kennedy family since 1691. Robert died 6 Jul 1854 in London and
Cultra House was sold in 1871, further land was sold off in 1880. Anne died at
Kensington on 20 Jun 1904. Her body was repatriated and she was buried at Cultra.
A window was erected in their memory at Holy Trinity Church in 1905.
1 Grace Emily Kennedy born circa 1850 was president of the Glencraig branch
of the Mothers Union. She died a spinster on 13 Oct 1938 at St Catherine's,
Craigavad.
2 Robert John Kennedy eldest son born 24 Dec 1851 at Bangor Castle. He was
educated in Harrow and graduated Oxford in 1874. He married Hon Bertha
Jane Ward on 9 Aug 1883 at Christ Church, Ballyculter near Castleward, Co
Down. Bertha was the third daughter of the Hon Henry William Crosbie Ward,
5th Viscount Bangor and his first wife, the writer Mary King. Robert was
secretary of the British Embassy at Constantinople. His duties saw him posted
to the Ottoman Empire, South America and Central Asia. Bertha was said to
be the "perfect British Embassy wife" and was "the outstanding Ulster
adventuress of the Edwardian age and the first European woman to enter
Khorāsān and Afghanistan." She was a expert horsewoman and completed
over 600 miles of 2K journey on horseback through Persia. In 1902 Berth
laid the foundation stone for a new house at Cultra – Cultra Manor and
rented Ardmore House in 1903. She moved into The Manor House at Cultra in
August 1904. Robert retired in 1912 to Cultra and was High Sheriff of Co Down
in 1915. Bertha was involved in numerous mission services including the
Midnight Mission and Robert a keen yachtsman, was involved with the Red Cross
and commodore of the Cultra Yacht Club. Bertha died 21 Aug 1936 and was
buried in the Pinetum at Cultra Manor. The funeral service was private and a
public memorial service was held at Glencraig. She left 12K in personal estate.
Robert died 11 Nov 1936 at Cultra Manor and was buried with his wife. In
1939 a memorial tablet was installed at Hold Trinity Church Glencraig in their
memory.
1 Mary Grace Enid (Enid) Kennedy born 3 May 1884 moved to Kennedy
Lodge in 1954 having disposed of Cultra Manor and its 136 acres to
the National Museums of Northern Ireland (later the Ulster Folk
Museum). Enid died a spinster in April 1965 at Kennedy Lodge.
2 Bertha Catherine Maud (Maud) Kennedy born 1885 at the British
Embassy, Constantinople. She was educated at Alexandra College,
Dublin and trained as a nurse. She served with the Red Cross in
Salonica during WW1. She was a long distance swimmer and
undertook the swim from The Sherries to Portrush in 1919. She
moved to Kennedy Lodge in 1954 with her sisters. Bertha died a
spinster on 2 Jun 1970 at Kennedy Lodge and left 48K in personal
estate.
3 Matilda Kathleen (Kathleen) Kennedy born 1 Feb 1888 served as a VAD
with Red Cross in Salonica during WW1. She moved to Kennedy Lodge
in 1954 with her sisters. Kathleen died 18 Dec 1960 and left 27K in
personal estate.
4 Lucy Emily Harriette Kennedy born on 8 Jan 1893. She married Sir
Herbert Hall Hall on 6 Oct 1915. Herbert was Vice Consul in Buenos
Aires and later Inspector General of HM Consular establishments.
Herbert died in 1964 and Lucy died on 6 Jan 1969 at age 75 at
Whitehanger Nursing Home, Haslemere, Surrey.
