Kennedy of Cultra
John Kennedy of Cultra married Elizabeth Cole.
1 Hugh Kennedy born circa 1775 married Grace Dorothea Hughes circa 1800. The family
lived at Cultra Co Down and Hugh was a JP. Grace died shortly after the birth of her
daughter in 1819.
1 John Hughes Kennedy eldest son born circa 1802 joined the 14th Light Dragoons.
He died at Cultra on 26 Dec 1839.
2 Robert Stewart Kennedy born 17 Oct 1803 married Catherine Ward.
3 Thomas Henry Kennedy third son born 18 Jun 1805 at Cultra. He ran the estate at
Cultra and was appointed JP in 1851. He was a member of the Natural History and
Philosophical Society and died 14 Mar 1864 at Cultra.
4 Dorothy Grace Anna eldest daughter born November 1808 at Cultra married Samuel
Price on 20 Jul 1831 at St George's Dublin. Samuel was a captain in the Royal Navy
and the son of Harrington Price of Westhouse, Brighton. Samuel was also the
nephew to the Earl of Strathmore.
5 Arthur Edward Kennedy fourth son born 5 April 1809 at Culta. He joined the 27th
Foot, 11th Regiment. He married Georgina Macartney on 18 May 1839. Georgina
was the third daughter of Joseph Macartney of Farm Hill, Co Down. They had at
least three children. Arthur was appointed Governor of Western Australia in 1854
and Governor of Vancouver Island in 1863. He was knighted in 1867 and in 1872 he
was appointed the 7th Governor of Hong Kong. He died at sea on 3 Jun 1883
travelling from Queensland to England.
6 William Hugh Kennedy born circa 1812 married Georgiana Paget at Reigate, Sussex
in April 1841. Georgiana was the fourth daughter of the Hon Sir Charles Paget and
niece of the Marquis Anglesey. William was in the Royal Navy and attained the
rank of captain. He died 13 Oct 1864.
7 George Augustus Kennedy died young.
8 Elizabeth Selina Kennedy second daughter married the Rev Herbert Kynaston, MA
on 2 Aug 1838 at Marylebone Church. Herbert was the High Master of St Paul's
School and perpetual curate of St Botolph, Aldgate.
9 Frances Matilda Kennedy, third daughter married Frederick Douglas Panter at the
British Ambassador's Chapel, Paris on 24 Sep 1833. Frederick was the eldest son of
S L Panter of Manor House, Middlesex.
10 Grace Maria Kennedy fourth daughter born circa 1812. She married Arthur
Woodgate at St Faith's Church London on 16 Jul 1844. Arthur was the son of the
Rev Stephen Woodgate. Georgina died 9 May 1900.
11 Emily Jane Kennedy born 14 Oct 1819 at Cultra. She married Donald Douglas in
Jersey on 5 Aug 1847. Donald was the youngest son of Sir Kenneth Douglas of
Glenbervie. Emily died in 1886.
Hugh Kennedy secondly married Hon Sophia Low on 11 Jul 1824 at St George's Church,
Dublin. Sophia was the daughter of William Low and the Hon Sophia Hamilton.
