Richard Jolly of Newtown Park & Kilmacud
Richard Jolly born circa 1860 son of Daniel Jolly, car owner/dairyman of Kilmacud, Stillorgan and his
wife Hesther Massey. He married Dora Binns of Millview House, Donnybrook, only surviving daughter
of Charles Binns a dairy farmer at St Mary's Donnybrook on 27 Jul 1887. Dora died on 30 Jul 1888 in
child birth aged 21 at Donnybrook.
1 Dora Jolly born 30 Jul 1888 at Donnybrook and of Glen Albyn Lodge married Samuel
Flynn, a stoker in the Royal Navy living on the HMS Irresistible at Devonport and son of George
Flynn, a gardener at Stillorgan Parish Church on 23 Dec 1912. Dora was boarding at the
Bethseda Orphanage and Boarding school in 1901 and with her grandparents the Binns at
Donnybrook in 1911.
Richard Jolly, secondly married Elizabeth (Lizzy) Hill born circa 1866 on 20 Sep 1888 at Dublin City
Registrar's Office. His mother Essie died 12 Dec 1898 aged 63 at Kilmacud and was buried at
Stillorgan. Richard died suddenly on Christmas Day and was buried at Stillorgan graveyard on
27 Dec 1905 aged 46. Elizabeth died 22 Aug 1937 at Kilmacud Road.
2 Essie Jolly born 15 Feb 1890 born Newtown Park was working as a parlourmaid at Glenart in
1911.
3 Richard (Dick) Jolly born circa 1893 was a motor driver from 5 Kilmacud Road. He married
Mary O'Hara, daughter of Dominic O'Hara. Mary was living at Lucern, Stillorgan Park when
they married at St John the Baptist RC Church, Blackrock on 30 Jan 1924. Richard was
living at The Convalescent Home gatelodge in 1937. Possible death for Richard, a chauffeur at
Rosney Cottage, Glenageary on 11 Jul 1948. (Informant his wife Mary).
4 John Jolley born 24 Apr 1894 at Stradbrook was working as a gardener at Obelisk Park in
1911 and at Whitecross when he married Gertrude Campbell, a domestic at Avonmore at
Stillorgan Parish Church on 1 Feb 1928. Their daughter Elizabeth Sydney Victoria was born at
5 Kilmacud Road and was named after two of Gertrude's siblings.
Gertrude was born on 29 Jul 1895 at Newtown Park to Thomas Campbell (a domestic servant/
butler) and Catherine Robinson. Gertrude, her mother and her seven siblings were living at
Swan's Nest, Kilbarrack in 1901 and her father was working for the Law family at Kilbarrack
House. Her mother died in 1904 and Gertrude and her sister Victoria were at Kirwan House,
The Female Orphan House in Glasnevin by 1911, though their father was alive and still
working for the Law family.
5 Daniel Jolly 2 Apr 1896 born at Stradbrook died 7 Apr 1896 at Belmont Cottage, Stradbrook
and was buried at Deansgrange.
6 Elizabeth Jane (Janey) Jolly born 6 Apr 1898 at Stillorgan baptised at St Brigid's, of 5 Kilmacud
Road married Edward Ivan Morgan son of John Morgan, a gardener, at St Brigid's Church
Stillorgan on 28 Apr 1926.
7 Thomas Jolly born 7 Jul 1901, baptised at Stillorgan Parish Church. A gardener he married
Laura Maud Sealy, a nurse at Avonmore, Stillorgan at St Brigid's Church Stillorgan on
15 Jun 1927. He was living at 5 Kilmacud Road in 1927 at the time of his marriage. Laura born
25 Apr 1903 at Rosslare was the daughter of Richard Sealy and Mary Kells. Her father was a
farmer and she grew up at Bearlough, Rosslare strand.
