George Thomas Stokes born 28.12.1843 son of John Stokes a Saddler and Margaret Foster of
Victoria Place, Athlone was educated at Galway Grammar, Queens College, Galway and Trinity
College. Ordained for curacy of Dunkerrin in 1866 and curate of St Patrick’s in Newry in 1867.
In 1869 he became Vicar of All Saints Church, Blackrock and in 1872 married Fanny Puzey
youngest daughter of late Thomas Puzey of Gayhurst Lodge, Surbiton, Surrey. Fanny died in
1880 and was buried at Deansgrange.
1 Frances Alice Stokes eldest daughter born 04.11.1872 at 74 Carysfort Avenue, Blackrock.
Frances married Rev Horace Granville Monroe son of Rt Hon John Monroe on 17.01.1900
at St Ann’s Church, Dublin. In 1911 the family were living at Mortlake, Surrey. They had
a son and two daughters, John George, Elizabeth and Margaret. Horace was appointed
Canon of Southwark in 1922 and Sub Dean of Wimbledon in 1930. Alice died in December
1932 and Horace became depressed. On the advice of doctors he took a holiday. He
travelled onboard the liner Berengaria to Newfoundland with his youngest daughter
Margaret. Half way across the Atlantic, his cabin was found to be empty and the
porthole window wide open. He was presumed drowned.
2 Edith Mary Stokes born 08.01.1874 at Newtown Park, Blackrock. Edith was living with
the Barnard family in Brighton in 1911.
3 George Henry Stokes born 06.06.1875 baptised on 02.07.1875 at All Saints. George died
at Creighton, Natal in 1957.
4 John Frederick Stokes 2nd son born 07.07.1876 at All Saints Vicarage. John a Stock
Broker living with his stepmother Katherine in 1901 and in Leeson Street in 1911. John
married Eva Jane Wilson daughter of William Henry Wilson of Carrickmines House on
26.04.1912 at Tullow Parish Church. The ceremony was performed by the Rev H Monroe,
Vicar of Mortlake. John died on 02.07.1937 aged 61 years at 77 Anglesea Road and Eva
died on 09.05.1955 aged 70 years at 2 Merlyn Drive and they are both buried at
Deansgrange.
5 Harold William Puzey Stokes born 15.01.1878 at All Saints Vicarage. Harold joined the
Royal Army Service Corps and became a Lieutenant-Colonel and received the D.S.O
and Commander of the Order of the British Empire (C.B.E). In 1911 he was in Jamaica
with the Overseas Military.
6 Fanny Eileen Maude Stokes born 05.01.1880 at All Saints Vicarage. Fanny was living
with Katherine in 1901 and died unmarried on 13.07.1932 aged 53 years at Baggot
Street Hospital late of 9 Anglesea Road and was buried in Deansgrange with her
parents.
George secondly married Katherine Isabella Dudgeon 2nd daughter of Henry James Dudgeon
of the Priory, Stillorgan on 03.07.1883 at All Saints Church. He had a deep interest in historical
and antiquarian research with a particular interest in the history of the Irish church and local
history. In 1883 he was appointed professor of ecclesiastical history at TCD and published
Ecclesiastical history and scientific research the same year. In 1887 he was appointed keeper of
Marsh's Library. He remained Vicar of All Saints until his death in 1898. Katherine was
living at 3 Leeson Street in 1901 with Fanny and John and died on 20.01.1938 aged 84 at 9
Anglesea Road and is buried at Deansgrange with her brother Herbert.
7 Henry James Dudgeon Stokes youngest son born 26.10.1884 at the Priory, Blackrock.
Henry obtained honours in Modern History at Trinity in 1905 and became a Lieutenant
in the Royal Army Service Corps. Henry married Josephine Mary Reynolds twin daughter
of Chas Henry Reynolds CIE of 30 Oakwood Court, Kensington in January at Columbo.
Henry died on 15.06.1964 at St Augustines Hospital, Durban.
