Parkes Family of Ardilea, Dundrum
Isaac Parkes born circa 1791 came to Dublin from Birmingham circa 1807. Isaac was apprenticed
to his brother William who was a manufacturer of metal buttons. He went on to work in Bishop
Street, Cork Street and then Glasnevin. One of his last commissions was the Guinness Medal for
the Dublin International Exhibition in 1865. Isaac died 30.11.1870 aged 78 years at his residence
4 Garville Avenue, Rathgar and was buried at Mount Jerome. Mary his wife died 12.01.1878 aged
95 years at Kenilworth House.
John Craig Parkes of the Coombe assisted his father Isaac and held the appointment of Medallist
to the Royal Dublin Society. He went on to open a more profitable wholesale ironmonger’s
business at the Coombe. John married Ellen Biddle daughter of Joseph Biddle in 1845.
This father and son manufactured medals and buttons. The also manufactured tokens for
Taverns that had billiard tables which allowed players to gamble without using money, as
gambling was illegal in licensed premise, the token could then be exchanged for drinks.
John left personal estate valued at just under £114K. The business which was so successful
closed circa 1979 and all that remains is the archway of the original works in The Coombe.

Mount Anville from 1883 to 1892. John died 07.09.1919 aged 71 years at Woodside,
Shrewsbury Road, Dublin and Edith died on 20.04.1926 aged 79 years at 18 Elgin Road,
Ballsbridge.

3 John Parkes born 02.10.1874 of 2 Grosvenor Terrace, Rathmines a Stockbroker. He
succeeded as chairman of JC Parkes after the death of his father in 1919. John
died on 05.03.1937 aged 62 years at 9 St James Terrace, Clonskeagh. Informant:

4 Captain Edward Ernest Parkes 3rd son born 28.10.1875 at Grosvenor Road. Edward
of the Royal Army Medical Corps married Elsie Mary only child of Dr W H Hugall

Square, London.

5 Alfred Edward Parkes youngest son born 09.01.1863 of 111 The Coombe married Margaret
Mary Warden eldest daughter of late Thomas Messenger Warden MRCS and LSA of
Stourport, Worcestershire on 28.07.1892 at St Giles’s Church, Exhall. Alfred died on
14.01.1939 aged 76 years and Margaret died on 15.08.1953 aged 87 years both at 57 Orwell
