George William Parker born circa 1862 in Armagh son of Jeremiah Parker. He married
Sarah Isabella Montgomery on 27 Jul 1892 at Holy Trinity Church, Rathmines. Sarah was
resident at 87 Moyne Road, Rathmines and the youngest daughter of the late James
Montgomery, a merchant of Muclough, Ballyconnell, Co Cavan. George was a tutor and
professor of mathematics. They were living at Zion Road in 1901. They were at Temple
Gardens in 1911 and four of their five children had survived. George died at the Adelaide
Hospital on 28 Jun 1923 late of 58 Kenilworth Square. Sarah died 2 Sep 1948 at 35
Clarinda Park West, Dun Laoghaire.
1 Marjorie Dorothy Parker born 31 Jul 1893 at 48 Grosvenor Square, Rathmines died
1907 at “Montrose”, Temple Gardens from whooping cough.
2 Geoffrey Owen Parker eldest son born 6 May 1895 at 48 Grosvenor Square,
Rathmines. He was educated at St Andrew’s and Trinity College. He served in
WW1 from 1915 to 1918 with a Canadian Regiment and the RAF. On his return he
accepted an appointment as district commissioner in West Africa and served in the
Forestry Department. He died March 1931 at the Gold Coast, West Africa.
3 Cyril Brian Denis Parker born 27 Mar 1898 Rathmines. He was a master at Sandford
College, Ranelagh. He was living at Foxrock and married Cerise Mary Orpen on
19 Jul 1932 at Tullow Church. Cerise was the daughter of Charles St George Orpen
and Cerise Maria "Cherry" Darley of ‘Lisheens’, Carrickmines. Cyril became the
partner of Albert MacDonogh as principal of Avoca School in 1933. The school was
a day and boarding school for boys and it moved to Newtownpark Avenue in 1936.
A new preparatory school for boys and girls was opened the same year and this was
under the charge of Cherry who trained as a Froebel teacher. Cyril was instrumental
in the setting up of the Parents and Teachers Associations in Ireland. Cyril was
patron of the Avoca School Old Boys Society and President of the Avoca School
Hockey Club. In 1962 it was announced that Cyril and Cherry were retiring and that
the school had been acquired by Michael Classon, a staff member, who would be
taking over as owner and principal, and that Eric Classon, his father would be
headmaster. Cyril died 21 Dec 1962 at Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital. His funeral
service was held at All Saint’s Blackrock and he was buried at Deansgrange. He was
survived by his wife and two daughters.
4 Hugh Lionel Parker youngest son born 17 Dec 1899 at 3 Zion Terrace, Rathmines. He
married Helen Henderson Scott on 7 Jan 1942 at Christ Church, Rathgar. Helen was
the daughter of the late Robert M Scott of Cork. Hugh was a bank manager and died
on 13 Feb 1950 at Royal Bank House, Dalkey.
5 Sheelah Muriel Joy Parker born 20 Aug 1908 at Temple Gardens, Rathmines. She won
a silver medal at the Tailteann Arts and Crafts competition for her illustration ‘Dance
of Death’ in 1932. She married Desmond Forrester Mayston on 24 Aug 1935 at St
Philip’s Church Milltown. Desmond was an insurance official and the son of musician
Albert Edward Mayston and Mary Maud Forrester. Sheelah was the author of ‘Juanita
Jones’ and other short stories.
