Hugh O'Callaghan of Culloville, Co Armagh born circa 1788. He was possibly the son of
James O'Callaghan of Culloville whose murder was attempted in 1810. Hugh was
appointed a magistrate in 1828 for Armagh, Monaghan and Louth. Hugh married Eliza
Waldron on 22 Feb 1830 in Dublin. Eliza was the eldest daughter of Patrick Waldron of
Inn’s Quay, and Rathgar House, Dublin and his wife Mary Skinner. Culloville was suffering
agrarian tension in the 1830's. He put up Culloville, Crossmaglen with 115 acres for let in
1833 and they moved to Landscape in Dublin, a property owned by Eliza’s father. He was
appointed a commissioner of peace for County Dublin in 1836. During the night of the
big wind of 1839, 23 elm trees when blown down on his property. He granted a 30 to
40% unsolicited abatement to his tenants in 1849 and forgave all arrears. He was a DL by
1854. The family lived at Rosemount in Booterstown from 1843 to 1864. Hugh died
14 May 1860 at Rosemount Booterstown and was buried at Glasnevin. He left £100 for
the relief of the poor of Upper Creggan, Armagh and £30 for the poor of the parish of
Booterstown. Eliza died 30 Nov 1893 at Rathgar and was buried at Glasnevin. She left
£500 in personal estate and her son Frederick was her executor.
1 Owen Francis O’Callaghan eldest son born February 1831 at Lower Fitzwilliam
Street was baptised at St Andrews. He was called to the bar in 1848. He died
at the Baths of Lucca in Tuscany on 29 Jun 1855.
2 Edward O’Callaghan born 8 Mar 1832 at Culloville, Co Armagh, baptised at St
Michan’s on 25 March 1832.
3 Frederick Edward O’Callaghan third son born 17 Nov 1834 baptised at
Rathfarnham. He graduated Trinity College and was called to the bar in 1859. He
was the owner of Greenmount in Clonsilla in 1868 and put it up for sale in 1886.
He worked for the land commission was appointed land commissioner in 1887.
He died a bachelor on 17 May 1898 at St Stephen’s Green Club and was buried at
Glasnevin. He left 3K in personal estate and probate was to his brother Hugh.
4 Mary Josephine O’Callaghan eldest daughter baptised at Rathfarnham in 1833.
She married widower Henry Hodgens on 8 Feb 1866 at Booterstown Church.
Henry lived at Beaufort, Rathfarnham, Co Dublin and had at least five children
from his first marriage. Henry and Mary had three children of whom two survived
in 1911. Henry died 24 Jan 1911 at Beaufort and left 4K in personal estate. Mary
died 3 Dec 1919 at 15 Raglan Road. Beaufort was bought by the Loreto Order in
1925 for use as a domestic college and school.
1 Elizabeth Mary Josephine (Lisa) Hodgens born 26 Nov 1866 at Beaufort. She
married widower Edward Patrick Monk at St Mary’s Haddington Road on
24 Nov 1915. Edward lived at Cavendish House in Rutland Square.
2 Frances Mary Bridget Hodgens born 4 Jul 1868 at Beaufort died
22 Mar 1897 at Beaufort and was buried at Glasnevin.
3 Gertrude Hodgens born 15 Nov 1873 at Beaufort living with her parents in
1901 and fl 1915.
5 Eliza O’Callaghan, second daughter born 4 Dec 1836 at Landscape, Co Dublin
baptised at Rathfarnham. She died a spinster in October 1848 at Rosemount and
was buried at Glasnevin.
6 Louisa Mary O’Callaghan second daughter born 27 Aug 1839 baptised at
Rathfarnham. She married Daniel Francis Murphy of Ballindinis, Co Cork on
11 Jan 1865 at Booterstown Church.
1 Son O'Callaghan born December 1865.
7 Hugh O’Callaghan youngest son born circa 1842 died unmarried on 12 Oct 1906
at 2 Belgrave Villas, Bray and was buried at Glasnevin.
