Nolan Ferrall of Rockville, & Sydenham Road, Dundrum
Patrick Nolan, son of John Nolan of Logboy born circa 1801. He was a solicitor of Inn's
Quay, Dublin and married Rosa Ferrall on 26 Jun 1830 at the Pro Cathedral in a double
wedding. Rosa was the daughter of the late Richard Ferrall of Corker, Co Roscommon.
On the same day her sister Bridget Louisa married Edmund Taaffe. Rosa was one of
the heirs to her uncle John Ferrall of Ballyglass, Co Roscommon. Other heirs were her
brother Daniel Ferrall, and her sisters Bridget Taaffe and Julia Anne Comnee. Patrick
bought the 1393 acre Logboy estate of Edmond John Nolan, and John Nolan in trust
for his son when it was for sale through the Encumbered Courts in 1852 for £6750.
Rose died 14 Apr 1853 at Fitzwilliam Street. Patrick on 12 Oct 1875 and was buried at
Glasnevin.
1 John Nolan of Logboy only son born circa 1832 was educated at Stonyhurst
College and graduated Trinity. He assumed the additional surname Ferrall
before 1853. John Nolan Ferrall also acquired other lands, which included
part of the Ferrall estate in Co Roscommon through his mother as well as
the estate of Lord Oranmore and Browne in the parish of Knock. He was
appointed a JP by 1855 and high sheriff in 1858. He married Julia Monaghan
at Holy Redeemer Church in Bray on 9 Aug 1869. John was resident at Logboy,
Ballyhaunis and was a landowner. Julia was the daughter of Rt Hon James
Henry Monahan, Chief Justice of Ireland. In 1876 John Nolan Ferrall owned
9731 acres in county Mayo. In 1881, his bailiff Luke Dillon was murdered and
the family left Lugboy to live in Dublin. By 1882 John was an absentee landlord
and was known as the most stubborn rackrenter in the country. In 1883 he
met with 200 or so of his 360 tenants in the Commercial Hotel, Ballyhaunis and
refused to accept less than he was due and issued ejection notices to those
who owed £20 or more. He yielded in 1887 and allowed a 15% reduction and
paid the legal fees. John died 15 Apr 1895 at 1 Sydenham Road, Dundrum and
was buried at Glasnevin. He left 25K in personal estate. Julia lived at Rockville
Dundrum from 1901 until 1914. Julia died 5 May 1918 at St Helen’s, Highfield
Road, Rathgar.
1 John Cecil Nolan Ferrall born circa 1876 in France took a BA at RUI.
He lived at Rockville Dundrum from 1911 to 1914 and at St Helen’s,
Highfield Road, Rathgar by 1918. He was secretary to the Agricultural
Wages Board of Ireland. He was a JP by 1909 and Hon Treasurer for
the Irish Automobile Club by 1923. He later lived in Belfast and
returned to live in Dublin in 1935. He died a bachelor on 12 Jun 1948
at a Monkstown nursing home late of Coliemore Road, Dalkey. He was
buried at Glasnevin. He left 19K in personal estate.
2 Henry James Nolan Ferrall born circa 1878 was with the Connaught
Rangers from 1899. He attained the rank of major and was wounded in
1915. He was stationed at Jullundur, India in 1920 and had retired by
1930 when he was appointed to the advisory committee of the Ministry
of Pensions. He died a bachelor on 29 Dec 1947 at 1 Coliemore Villas,
Coliemore Road, Dalkey, Co Dublin and was buried at Glasnevin. He left
19K in personal estate.
3 Rose Frances Mary Nolan Ferrall born 11 Feb 1882 at 1 Fortview Terrace,
Bray, Co Wicklow took at BA at RUI. She played with Killiney Ladies
Hockey club in 1906. She lived with her brothers in Belfast and returned
to Dublin in 1935. Rose died a spinster on 11 Jun 1961 at 11 Brighton
Vale, Monkstown and was buried at Glasnevin.
