The Monahan family of Stillorgan Park House
Michael Monahan of Heathlawn, Portumna married Mary Bloomfield, daughter of
Stephen Bloomfield of Eyres Court, Galway.
1 James Henry Monahan eldest son born circa 1803 graduated Trinity entered
Gray’s Inn and was called to the Irish bar in 1828. He married Frances (Fanny)
Harrington, daughter of Nicholas Harrington of Dublin on 16 Jun 1832. He was
appointed Solicitor General in 1846 and elected member for Galway in 1846. In
1847 he was appointed Attorney General for Ireland and was chief justice of the
Common Pleas in 1850. Fanny died 21 Mar 1855 at 5 Fitzwilliam Square and was
buried at Glasnevin. He was elected to the Senate in 1860. He retired in 1878
and died at his residence at 5 Fitzwilliam Square on 8 Dec 1878 and left 16K in
personal estate. He was buried with his wife and he was survived by two sons
and four daughters.
1 James Henry Monahan, eldest son called to the Irish bar 1856, QC 1868
lived at 29 Fitzwilliam Square. He married Fanny, second daughter of Francis
O’Beirne of Jamestown Lodge, Leitrim on 2 Apr 1856.
2 Henry James Monahan born circa 1836 was Registrar of the consolidated Nisi Prius
Court. He married Mary O'Brien, daughter of James O'Brien on 29 Apr 1867 at St
Kevin's Church. They lived at Stillorgan Park House from 1882. They had nine
children of whom six were still alive in 1911. Henry died 22 Sep 1911 leaving nearly
3K in personal effects.
1 Edith Mary Margaret Monahan born 17 Jan 1869 at 40 Lower Leeson Street
joined a religious order. She died at the Convent of the Sacred Heart on
12 Nov 1945 at St Charles Square, London.
2 Maud Mary Frances Josephine born 10 Aug 1870 at 40 Lower Leeson Street.
3 Henry James Monahan born 26 Oct 1871 at 40 Leeson Street was a barrister.
He died a bachelor on 19 Jun 1955 at Cultra, Marlborough Road, Glenageary.
4 Emily Clara Mary Josephine Monahan born 9 Mar 1873.
5 George John Monahan born 28 Dec 1874 at 40 Lower Leeson Street worked for
the Indian Civil Service. George married Helen Margaret and died 7 Aug 1938
at Stillorgan Park.
6 Beatrice Mary Josephine Monahan born 11 Mar 1877 at 40 Lower Leeson
Street.
7 Mary Agnes Josephine Alphonsa (May) Monahan born 2 Aug 1880 at 40 Lower
Leeson Street was a keen cyclist and died a spinster, late of Stillorgan Park at
97 Lower Leeson Street on 6 May 1934 and left 10K in personal estate.
3 Fanny Monahan eldest daughter married Alfred Wilson Trevelyan at Dublin in
February 1860. They had six daughters. Sir Alfred died in 1891 and Lady Trevelyan
died 4 Dec 1907.
4 Ellen Monahan second daughter married Hugh O'Beirne at St Andrew's on
26 Jan 1858. Hugh was of Jamestown Lodge, Co Leitrim.
5 Mary Monahan third daughter married Charles Edward Martin at the Catholic University
Chapel on Stephen's Green in April 1872. Charles was the son of James Martin, JP
a builder of Cappagh and proprietor of John Martin & Son of North Quay. In 1863 Charles
formed T & C Martin which became the largest timber merchants in Dublin. Charles died
on 13 Oct 1907 at his home, Montrose in Donnybrook and left 341K in personal estate.
6 Julia Monahan youngest daughter born circa 1846 in Dublin married John Nolan
Ferrall on 9 Aug 1869. Julia was resident at Vevay House, Bray with her parents.
