George Mitchell born 23 Jul 1857 at 66 Leinster Road, Rathmines, son of George Mitchell, a
tobacco and wine merchant. George was a tobacco and wine merchant and married Anne
McGlashan on 07.10.1884 at Rathfarnham Church. Annie was the daughter of Edward
McGlashan of Dunedin, New Zealand. The family lived at Ardlui from 1893 to 1925. Annie
died suddenly on 27.10.1902 aged 41 at 5 Hertford Street, Mayfair, London aged 41 years.
1 George Douglas Mitchell born 12.07.1885 eldest son married Maria Doig on 15.09.1914
at St Paul’s Church, Los Angeles.
2 Alan Gordon Mitchell born 09.03.1887 at Islington, Rathgar. In 1911 he was a farm
student living with the Selwood family at Villars Farm Meysey Hampton Fairford. He died
on 08.10.1933, aged 46 years at Sun Haven Sandbanks, Bournemouth late of the Stud farm,
Hamwood, Dunboyne. He left 27k in personal estate, probate to John Hugh Wilson.
3 Francis Sydney Mitchell born 25 Jun 1889 at Islington, Rathgar. He attended Park
House School in Newbury. After he took his degree at Trinity College he became a
resident member of the staff of the Royal City of Dublin Hospital, Baggot Street. He
was gazetted a temporary lieutenant in the RAMC on 7 Apr 1915.
He went out to France in July 1915 with the 73rd Field Ambulance, attached to the
24th Division, was present at the Battle of Loos in September, and with the exception
of short leave at the end of January 1916, he remained at The Front, mainly in the
Ypres salient. He was killed on active service on 15 Feb 1916 in France and was
buried in the Military Cemetery on the Menin Road near Ypres.
His Commanding Officer wrote: 'It is with the deepest regret that I have to inform
you that your son was killed in action on February 15th, while temporarily attached to
the 9th Royal Sussex Regt. He is buried in the Military Cemetery, close to the Mill on
the Menin Road, near Ypres. Your son was a most efficient officer, and in his devotion
to duty and disregard of danger carried out the highest traditions of the Corps to
which he belonged.' There is a stained glass window in All Saint's Church, Blackrock
in his memory.
George secondly married Emily Constance (Connie) Wilson on 20.02.1909 at Tullow Church.
Emily born 14.02.1881 was the daughter of William Henry Wilson and Emily Charlotte Hone
of Carrickmines. The premises at 20 Sackville Street were destroyed in 1916 and they moved to
9 D'Olier Street. George died 08.11.1924 at Ardlui and left over 120k in personal estate in both
Ireland and Scotland. Connie died 7 Oct 1936 at Eastbourne, late of the Grey House,
Carrickmines. She left 24k in personal estate, probate to her sister Eva Stokes.
