Mills and Mills King of Dawson Court
Dr Daniel Mills King born circa 1740 married Christina Thompson. He was possibly the son of
Daniel Mills of Rathdrum who died in 1779. He was a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians
in 1799. He lived at Kingston in Rathdrum and was elected President and fellow, King and
Queen’s College of Physicians in 1807. Daniel Mills, a medical doctor served as High Sheriff of
County Wicklow in 1816, had taken the name ‘Mills King’ after an inheritance in 1811 from
Thomas King of Kingston. He was the executor de bonis non of the estate of Thomas King of
Kingston near Rathdrum who died in 1811. Daniel received shares in the Silver Lead Mines of
Glenmalure from Thomas King. Dr Daniel Mills King died a widower on 14 Sep 1818 at
Kingston and left 7.5K in personal estate. His son Daniel Mills and Rev John Lyna were the
executors.
1 Daniel Mills or Daniel Mills King born circa 1778 was the second son. He was a member
of the Glenmalure Lead Mine Company in 1822. He was living at 19 Charlemont Street
in 1848. He died 8 May 1869 ages 71 at James’s Place Cross Avenue, late of
Williamstown Avenue left £200 in personal estate. Executor was John of 35 Carysfort
Avenue, his son.
1 Michael Mills born circa 1825 son of Daniel Mills/Mills King. He was resident at
19 Charlemont and married Matilda Edmonds on 17 Jun 1848 at St Peter’s,
Dublin. Matilda was the daughter of James Edmonds, an attorney of 19
Charlemont Street (and possiby wife Ellen Matilda White). Michael was of the
City of Dublin Steam Company. He lived at 3 St James’ Place in 1870 and later
at Dawson Court (1873-1883). Matilda died at Dawson’s Court on 1 Mar 1883
aged 57 and was buried at Deansgrange. Informant was her aunt Malvina
Geoghegan. Michael Mills-King died at Rosemont Avoca Avenue on
24 Feb 1901 and was buried with his wife and son.
1 James Mills eldest son born 31 Jul 1849 at 36 Lower Camden Street,
Dublin worked at the Public Records Office and was a member of the
Royal Irish Academy. He lived at Annamore orAvonmore, Blackrock. He
married Emily Kate Smith at Booterstown Parish Church on 6 Jul 1887.
Emily was the daughter of Captain Thomas J Smith, 33rd Regt.
2 John Edward (Jack) Mills died a bachelor on 5 Dec 1887 at Annamore,
Sydney Avenue Blackrock aged 27 and was buried at Deansgrange with
his mother.
3 Mary (Cissie) Mills born circa 1851 died a spinster on 17 Mar 1939 at 16
Waltham Terrace, Blackrock aged 88 and was buried at Deangrange.
4 Michael Thomas Mills born 29 Sep 1853 at 12 De Grey Terrace,
Haddington Road.
5 Ellen Matilda (Nellie) Mills-King, second daughter born circa 1856 was living
with her sister Mary at Waltham Terrace in 1911. She died 19 Feb 1941 at
The Rectory, Killanully, Carrigaline, Cork.
6 Adeline Mills King, youngest daughter born circa 1858 in Co Dublin married
Rev Alexander Irwin of Mallow at Booterstown Church on 2 Sep 1880.
Alexander was the third son of the Rev Alexander Staples Irwin of
Tamlaght, Co Londonderry and his wife Mary Olivia Hardcastle.
Alexander was later a Canon. Adeline died a widow on18 Aug 1944 aged
86 at The Rectory, Killanully, Carrigaline, Cork. They had one child.
1 Alexander Eric Hardcastle Irwin born 29 Aug 1881 at Dawson
Court. He married Alicia Elizabeth Worthington Craig on
26 Jun 1939 at Marmullane Church, Cork. Alicia was the daughter
of Henry Brown Craig of Marmullane House, Passage West.
2 Thomas Mills King lived at Kingston and was appointed a magistrate of Wicklow in
1827 and was a captain in the Wicklow Regiment of Militia. He was secretary to the
Conservative Club, Rathdrum in 1836. He attended Castle Macadam Church and
was Bankrupt by 1841. He died 14 Jan 1847 at Heytesbury Street.
3 Joseph Mills of Grove House Wicklow.
4 John Scott Mills 4th son educated at Dundalk admitted Kings Inn 1826 and Freeman of
the City of Dublin in 1831. He lived firstly at Denzille Street and by 1841 at 13 Upper
Merrion Street. He married Maria Medina Wall at Clontarf Church on 11 Apr 1831.
Maria was the eldest daughter of the late Colonel Wilkinson and Mrs Anne Wall nee
Carter of Donaraile. Maria died at 7 Upper Merrion Street on 15 Feb 1846. He was living
at Baggot Street and insolvent in 1850. His name was removed from the roll of solicitors
in 1862 after a case of fraud was proven against him.
1 William John Mills eldest son born 12 Dec 1831 at Denzille Street baptised at St
Peter’s died 13 Feb 1843 at 13 Upper Merrion Street.
2 Thomas Arthur Mills born 25 April 1834 at Denzille Street baptised at St Peter’s.
5 Malvina Mills only surviving daughter married William Wilson on 1 Jul 1863 at
Booterstown Church. William worked at the Legacy and Succession Duty office in Dublin.
