William Meagher, grandson of William Meagher of Roscrea born circa 1821 was a wine merchant and
grocer of Sheriff Street, later a member of the Grocer's and Vintners' Society. He married Mary Anne
Jones on 21 May 1846, daughter of Matthew Jones, of North Wall. By 1853 he was the proprietor of
a large hotel and spirit stores on the corner of Guild Street, North Wall. He was auditor to the Dublin
Cattle Market Company in 1863. He was appointed a JP, Town Councillor (1869), Home Rule MP for
Co Meath, Alderman (1882) and was Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1884. Whilst he was in office, he opened
a new road from Great Brunswick Street to the Swivel bridge (Butt Bridge) and laid the foundation
stone for the first public baths on this newly named Tara Street. He also formally opened two free
public libraries at Thomas Street and Capel Street. He also opened the third reservoir at Stillorgan.
William died at Lisalea, Blackrock on the 24 Mar 1897. He was buried at Glasnevin (B22) and left 14K
in personal estate. Mary Anne died 1 Apr 1916 at 13 Idrone Terrace, Blackrock aged 92 and left 8K in
personal estate. She was buried with her husband and daughter.
1 Bridget Lucy Meagher only child born circa 1853 married William Henry Finlay on
21 Feb 1867 at St Lawrence O’Toole, Dublin. William was resident at Abbey Street, a clerk in
a counting house and the son of Surgeon Frederick Spencer Finlay. William was based in
New York by 1871.

3 Samuel Joseph Spencer Finlay born 5 Apr 1871 at 6 Castle Avenue, Clontarf.
Bridget secondly married Robert Frederick Finlay at Liverpool in 1899. Robert was secretary
of the Liverpool Science and Technology School. They lived at 7 Kelvin Grove, Princes Park,
Liverpool and were in Toxteth Park, Liverpool in 1911. Bridget died at her mother’s residence
13 Idrone Terrace on 12 Oct 1915 and was buried at Glasnevin.
