William Rodger McTaggart born 07.06.1857 at Kilcoman, Argyll son of Niel McTaggart and
Marion Rodger. He was educated at Queens in Cork and was on the college cycling team.
He held the Benz Dealership for Ireland in 1890. He married Anne Julia Dalton daughter of
Benjamin Dalton on 24.11.1891 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Cork. William had a a bicycle
business at Patrick Street in Cork which was acquired by the Pneumatic Tyre and Cycle
Company Ltd in 1893. They moved to Dublin and William opened a shop at 102 Grafton
Street and at Aungier Street where they manufactured their 'Royal' cycle which became a
favorite of the RIC. They manufactured Ladies and gents bike using Dunlop tyres which sold
for £10. By 1901 he was sole agent for the FN Motor Cycle for England and Ireland. He also
had a purpose build motor garage on South King Street, Dublin which was the largest motor
garage, sale rooms & workshop under one roof in Dublin. They lived at Deepwell, Blackrock
from 1897 to to 1909. In 1906 he set a new record in a Argyll 2 cylinder motor car in the End to
End of Ireland Race (from Mizen Head to Fair Head). He completed the journey in 21 hours,
knocking 7 hours off the previous record. He traded as Argylls Ltd from Grafton Street and also
operated a motor school and motor hire business. The premises at 102 Grafton Street were
badly damaged by a gas explosion next door at Forrest & Son in 1907. McTaggart was the
sole agent for the Sunbeam, Minerva and Hillman motor cars. In 1913 he had his licence
endorsed for speeding on the Stillorgan Road. William died at the Royal City of Dublin Hospital
late of 81 Harcourt Street and was buried with his wife at Deansgrange.
1 Marion Rose McTaggart born 08.12.1892 at Myrtle Hill Terrace, Cork. Marion living
at 56 Pembroke Road in 1911 and died unmarried on 02.11.1967 at Elmhurst,
Glasnevin, Dublin.
2 Jesse McTaggart born 24.03.1894 at 2 Burton Terrace, Sundays Well, Cork. Jesse
was living with her father and sister Marion in 1911 and died unmarried on
20.01.1919 at the Meath Hospital late of 56 Pembroke Road.
3 Anna McTaggart born 27.02.1896 at 25 Rathgar Road, Dublin. Anna aged 15 years
was staying with her uncle David Alexander in 1911 at 2 Galloping Green, Stillorgan.
Anna (Terry) married Henry St George Smith, a medical student at Trinity College
son of St George Alex Smith of Piperstown on 29.01.1920 at the Registrar’s Office,
Dublin and again on 23.09.1921 at St Stephen's Church, Dublin.
4 William Roger McTaggart born 06.08.1897 at Deepwell, Blackrock received a
commission in 1915 in the Mechanical Transport division of the Royal Service
Corps and was wounded in 1916.
5 Neil McTaggart born 23.08.1906 at Deepwell, Blackrock and died 23.08.1906
aged 28 days at same place and is buried at Deansgrange.
