James McCullagh born circa 1782, son of William McCullagh was a Wine Merchant. He married Jane
Torrens daughter of Andrew Torrens of 14 Granby Place at St George’s Church on 13.10.1812. James
traded as Henry, Parker & McCullagh until 1824 when the partnership was dissolved and traded as
Henry & McCullagh thereafter of 69 Abbey Street. Jane was a niece of Sir Robert Richard Torrens
from Cork, a politician and land reformer, who was knighted after originating a system for
registering land title. Jane was a governess of the Lock Penitentiary and James was secretary of the
Charitable Association raising money for the Bethesda and was on the City Grand Jury.
1 William Torrens McCullagh eldest son born 13.10.1813 was baptised at St Mary's Dublin on
24.11.1813. He was educated at Trinity and graduated in 1833 and was called to the Irish Bar
in 1836. He graduated LLB in 1842 and was called to the English Bar 1855. William married
Margaret Henrietta Gray daughter of John Gray of Claremorris, Mayo in 1836. William was
one of the founder members of the Anti-Corn Law League founded in 1838. In 1846 he was
private secretary to Henry Labouchere, Chief Secretary to Ireland and in 1863 he adopted the
additional surname Torrens. He published a number of works including 'The life and times of
Sir James Graham' in 1863. Margaret died on 21.01.1873 at 49 St Georges Road and is buried at
Mount Jerome.

William married secondly Emily Harrison widow of Thomas Russell of Leamington and 3rd
daughter of late William Harrison of Leamington on 05.01.1878 at St Peter’s, Eaton Square,
London. William was knocked down by a hansom cab in London on 25.04.1894 and died from
his injuries the following day 26.04.1894 at 23 Bryanston Square, close to Baker Street, the
residence of his daughter.

of the firm of James McCullagh, Wine Merchants of Abbey Street married Anna Catherine Smyth
daughter of Robert Smyth and Rachel Webber of Stephens Green on 23.08.1839 at St Anne's
Church, Dublin. Andrew died on 26.08.1902 aged 87 years late of Rockbrae, Bray and 34 Lower
Abbey Street. Anna Catherine died 30.10.1908 aged 91 years at Rockbrae and they are buried at
St Patricks Church, Enniskerry. Probate to Rachel Marsh.

Catherine died on 07.02.1936 aged 81 years at the Adelaide Hospital of St John’s, Newtown Park.
