Durham Matthews born 15.01.1876 in Yorkshire only son of Thomas Bright Matthews and
Phoebe Adeline Simpson of Thorp Arch Hall, Yorkshire. He was educated at Eton College and
was a captain in the 17th Lancers and ADC to Lieut General Sir Baker Russell. He married
Eileen Mareli Talbot-Power only daughter of Sir John Talbot-Power in 1902. They lived at
Invernisk, Killiney in 1910/11 and at Seafield in 1912/3 when he retired. He gave his mother
away when she remarried in 1913. Eileen was very ill and in 1913 Durham purchased
Clonsilla Lodge. He was a racehorse owner and rejoined the 17th Lancers on the outbreak
of war, mentioned in despatches twice and received an OBE. The family lived at Clonsilla
Lodge from 1913 until 1917 when they leased it to Lord and Lady Decies. They were living at
St James's Court London by 1921 and at Lanwades Park, Moulton, Mildenhall in 1939.
Durham died 17.12.1950 at Bolton House, Newmarket and left 7K in personal estate. Eileen
died on 26.05.1974 at Newmarket.
1 John Reginald Durham Matthews born 1903 in Portsmouth. He was educated
at St Anthony's, Eastbourne and Eton. He passed through Sandhurst and was
gazetted to the 17/21st Lancers in 1923 and transferred to the Irish Guards in 1927.
He married Australian born Hilary Madeline Keating, daughter of Francis Ambrose
Keating of 15 Rutland Gate and King’s Beeches, Sunninghill, Berkshire on 6 Dec 1927
at the Brompton Oratory. Captain Jack retired in 1933 but was recalled on the outbreak
of war. Jack and Hilary had one son together before they separated circa 1938. Hilary
married John D Moore at Chelsea in 1939.
John secondly married Phillipa Avril Kennedy on 17.09.1939 in Los Angeles. Phillippa
was the daughter of Major Charles Marshall Courtenay Kennedy and Barbara Francis
Mary Guinness. John died when he was lost at sea on 15.05.1940 aged 36 years on
war service with the Irish Guard on board HMT Chrobry which was carrying troops
near Skanland in Norway. Phillippa later married Wallace Douglas Finlayson, brother of
actor Robert Douglas.
