Records show that Edward Joseph Mason was born circa 1872 in Co Wicklow, son of Edward
Mason, a labourer. However, no birth record has been found for him nor his whereabouts at
the time of the 1901 census. Family lore suggests he had been adopted. He was living and
working at Maria Mount, Inchicore when he married Mary Farrelly on 18 Jun 1903 at the
Congregation Church in Kilmainham. Mary was the daughter of Robert? Farrelly, a labourer
and was resident at 8 Belton Terrace, SCR. They were living in a house owned by
Durham Mathews (son of John Talbot Power of Edermine, Co Wexford) at Seafield,
Booterstown in 1911. They identified as Church of Ireland and four of their five children had
survived. The family lived at Templenacrow, Adamstown, Co Wicklow from circa 1913 and
had returned to Dublin by 1920. Edward was a handyman at St Helen’s from 1919 to 1925.
Mary died aged 36 at St Helen’s on 30 Aug 1920.

gardener living at The Lodge, Hall School, Monkstown when he married Alice Mary
Young at Zion Church, Rathgar on 15 Apr 1947. Mary was living at Bushy Park Road,
Rathgar and her father was William Henry Young.
2 Richard Mason born 18 Oct 1907 at Seafield Lodge, Stillorgan. Richard was a labourer
at Gortmore, Ballinteer when he married Margaret Noctor on 4 Aug 1929 at Foxrock
Church. Margaret was from Deansgrange and the daughter of Thomas Noctor.
3 William Mason born 7 Dec 1908 at Seafield, Booterstown. William was a Private, 2nd
Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers when he married Josephine Agnes Robertson on
27 Dec 1937 at St Werburg’s Church, Dublin. Josephine was living at Ross Road, Dublin
and her father was James Robertson.
4 Child Mason died before 1911.
5 Mary Ellen Mason was born on 31 Aug 1910 at Seafield Lodge, Stillorgan. circa 1910.
6 Albert James Mason born 4 Mar 1913 at Templenacrow, Adamstown, Co Wexford. He
was a gardener in Ballinteer when he married Mary Robinson on 25 Sep 1938 at
Ballybrack Church. Mary was a domestic and living at New Vale, Shankill.
7 Susana Mason born 24 May 1914 at Templenacrow, Adamstown, Co Wexford. She
became a housekeeper for Archbishop John Charles McQuaid in Killiney.
8 Elizabeth Mason born 7 Oct 1915 at Templenacrow, Adamstown, Co Wexford. She
also became a housekeeper for Archbishop John Charles McQuaid in Killiney.
Edward secondly married Mary Ryan on 17 Apr 1922 at the Catholic Church, Donnybrook.
Mary was living at Glenomena, Stillorgan Road and was the daughter of Patrick Ryan, a
gardener. Edward was working as a handyman at St Helen’s, Stillorgan at the time of his
marriage and had fathered at lease eight Children was his previous marriage. He worked at
Roebuck House in 1924 and at Gortmore for the Lefroy family as a gardener from 1929 to 1932.
They lived in a cottage on the Gortmore estate until they moved to 63 Ballinteer Cottages in
1940. Mary died 4 Dec 1948 aged 62 at 63 Ballinteer Cottages. Her funeral mass was held at
Holy Cross Church, Dundrum and she was buried at Deansgrange (plot St Fintan/X1/33). She
was survived by one son, daughters, and her parents. Edward died 7 Feb 1961 at 63 Ballinteer
Cottages, his daughter Margaret the informant. He was buried with his wife.
9 Margaret Mary Mason born 31 Jan 1923 at Holles Street Hospital. She married John
Leslie from Scotland in 1950 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. They returned to live in 63
Ballinteer Cottages. Margaret worked in the catering section of Esso offices, Stillorgan
where The Grange apartments are now. John worked in the HB ice cream factory,
Rathfarnham.
10 Angela Mason born 17 May 1924 at Holles Street Hospital. Angela spent time with
the A T S in Belfast and Berlin. She married Edward (Teddy) Crofton from Dublin in
1950 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. They returned home in 1954 and lived in Kilternan and
Dundrum. Edward worked for Hughes Dairy, Rathfarnham until his retirement.
11 Patrick Mason was born in May 1925 at Holles Street Hospital. He left Ireland circa
1951 and joined the British army. He later emigrated to Australia and joined the
Australian army. He died unmarried in Brisbane.
12 Bridget Ita Mason was born on 10 July 1926 at Holles Street Hospital. She emigrated
to London aged 16, where she trained as a nurse. In 1948 she moved to Newcastle-
upon-Tyne where she married John Evans on 3 Jul 1948. John died in 1949 and Ita
secondly married George Murray. When she died her ashes were spread in the
gardens at Gortmore.
