The Martins were a prodigious family who made their money through property, shipping and Timber.
Thomas Sherlock Shannon Martin born circa 1827 son of James Martin. He was a timber merchant of
North Wall in partnership with his brothers Richard Martin of 18 Merrion Square and Charles Martin of 12
Fitzwilliam Square. He married Emma Robertson circa 1855 in Australia.
1 Margaret Fitzgerald Martin born circa 1859 in Australia married Thomas Talbot-Power son of
James Power on 07.05.1884 at the Chapel of His Eminence MacCabe in Rutland Square,
Dublin. They were living at Thornhill in 1911. Lady Margaret died on 10.02.1930 aged 70
years and Sir Thomas died on 06.07.1930 aged 69 years both at their residence Ayesha in Killiney.
2 Mary Theresa Martin baptised 12.04.1861 at Haddington Road, Dublin.
Emma died on 13.12.1862 aged 23 years at Arcachon, Gironde. Thomas married secondly Mary
Cogan baptised circa 1839 daughter of Patrick Owen Cogan and Helena Cogan on 22.08.1864 in
Irishtown, Dublin. They lived at Airfield in Donnybrook initially, they lived at Beaufield, Stillorgan
from 1867 to 1884 . Thomas died 27.11.1887 aged 60 years at Kilmarnock, Ballybrack. He left 46k in
personal estate.
3 Thomas Patrick Martin born 03.07.1865 at 13 Rutland Square married Mary Aloysius Levins
Moore on 16.04.1890 at St Andrews Church Westland Row, Dublin. Thomas died on
17.03.1907 aged 42 years at his residence Green Bank, Monkstown. He shot himself
accidently was the coroner's findings. They had twelve children including Mother Mary
Martin, founder of The Medical Missionaries of Mary.
4 Helena Martin born 11.10.1866 at Thornhill, Stillorgan. Helena joined the Sisters of Charity as
Sister Agnes Aloysius and died 17.04.1937 at 96 Lower Leeson Street.
5 Richard Joseph Martin born 17.10.1867 at Beaufield, Stillorgan. Richard married Agnes Ross-
Todd in 1894 in Bangor, Wales. Richard, late of Eversden, Sandford Road died on 26.09.1925
aged 58 years at 26 Upper Pembroke Street.
1 Richard Ross Martin born 25.07.1895 at 9 Herbert Street.
2 Thomas Fitzgerald Martin born 28.02.1897 at 9 Herbert Street.
3 Ernest Owen Martin born 28.01.1900 at 9 Herbert Street.
4 Agnes Mary Violet Martin born 17.10.1904 at Eversden, Clonskeagh.
6 James Ignatius Shannon Martin born 17.02.1869 at Beaufield, Stillorgan and died there on
17.03.1870.
7 Francis (Frank) Vincent Martin born 16.07.1870 at Beaufield, Stillorgan married Mary Arabella
Murphy on 16.04.1896 at Booterstown. They lived at Northumberland Road, Dublin and
Craigmore, Blackrock.
8 Charles Owen Martin born 24.10.1871 at Beaufield, Stillorgan. Charles a stock broker living
at 28 Clyde Road married Bridget Jane Murphy of Knapton, Monkstown daughter of Sir
James Murphy on 14.09.1910 at St Patrick’s RC Church, Monkstown. Jane died on
22.08.1911 at Abbotsford, Foxrock. Charles a widower died 10.11.1921 aged 50 years at
Carrickshinnagh, Foxrock.
9 Kathleen Mary Ursula Martin born 18.10.1873 at Stillorgan. Kathleen died 17.10.1925 aged
52 years at Carrickshinnagh, Foxrock.
10 Laurence Peter Philip Waldron Martin born 01.05.1875 at Beaufield, Stillorgan. Laurence a
corn merchant married Maria Louisa Johnson in 1908 in Holyhead. Laurence a widower of
19 Palmerston Park married secondly Elizabeth Cullimore daughter of Joseph Albert
Cullimore on 06.02.1929 at St Andrew’s Church, Dublin. He was a director of the Patriotic
Assurance Company and chairman of the Dublin Artisans Dwellings Company. Laurence
died on 18.12.1940 aged 65 years at his residence Holywell House, Dundrum. The
informant was his nephew Thomas S Martin. He left 18k in personal estate.
11 Patrick Owen Martin born 14.12.1876 at Beaufield, Stillorgan and died there on 25.05.1877.
12 Bernard John Algernon Cyril Martin born 15.08.1879. Bernard a timber merchant living at 28
Clyde Road married May Angela Egan of 21 Merrion Square daughter of Edward Egan on
02.09.1908 at St Andrew’s Church, Dublin. Bernard died 01.06.1916 at Arderagh, Eglington
Road, Donnybrook.
