Magee Family of Parsons Green, Kilmacud, County Dublin
William Snell Magee of Parson’s Green was a Dublin merchant and one of the partners in the
firm of William and Robert Magee. They operated from 40 Sackville Street and auctioned
tobacco, hemp, linen and wine. He was also a director of Bank of Ireland between 1810 and
1833 and a member of the Ouzel Galley.
Mr Magee purchased the house, then known as "Parson's Green" in 1791 and lived there for
nearly 60 years. He married Frances Diana Croker-King. She was the daughter of Samuel Croker
(later known as Croker-King), who it was said had saved the life of a young boy who would later
become the Duke of Wellington. Samuel was a founder member of the Royal College of
Surgeons in 1780 and was a consultant surgeon to the Rotunda Lying in Hospital in 1784. Three
of William Magee’s daughters married in Stillorgan and lived locally.
His grandson, also called William Snell Magee immigrated to Australia to Ballarat in the Victoria
district. By the end of 1852, some 90,000 people had flocked to Victoria in search of gold. An
unusual and interesting memorial is to be found at Stillorgan Graveyard.

departed this life trusting solely on the merits of her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on 1st

The final resting place of the Magee family has not be identified to-date.

Susanna McGee of Ormond Quay. William a Merchant of 40 Sackville Place was a Director of Bank
of Ireland and a member of the Ouzel Galley. William purchased Parsons Green in 1794.

3 Robert Magee eldest son of Ormond Quay baptised 14.10.1790 at St Mary’s married Janet
(Jessy) Prentice daughter of Richard Prentice of Princes Street, Edinburgh on 26.07.1825 at
Edinburgh. Jessy died in Dublin 18.05.1826. Robert died 29.07.1846 at Parsons Green.
4 Samuel Magee (Rev) of Ormond Quay baptised 06.10.1791 at St Mary’s was for 49 years the
Vicar of the Parish of Rathmoylon in County Meath. Samuel died 14.02.1873 aged 82 years
at 6 Upper Prince Edward, Blackrock. Margaret his wife died on 04.01.1881 at 12 Clarinda
Park North. Margaret was the beloved Aunt of William Snell Magee of Ballarat. Samuel
married Margaret Frood eldest daughter of Major James N Frood at Oakhill, Cavan circa
March 1818.
5 William Magee of Ormond Quay baptised 14.01.1793 at St Mary’s.
6 Charles Magee of Bachelors Walk baptised 06.04.1794 at St Mary’s married Margaret Crozier
youngest daughter of George Crozier of Banbridge on the 01.02.1822 at Seapatrick Church.
Margaret was the sister of Captain F R M Crozier of the HMS Terror on the Franklin Expedition.
Charles was a JP and lived at Bellvue, Kilmacud Road from 1858 to 1860 before moving to 5
Sydney Avenue, Blackrock.
1 Francis Magee born circa 1825 married Isabella Stewart in January 1853.
2 William Snell Magee born circa 1829 moved to Ballarat and became Governor of
Melbourne Jail. He married Selina Kelly in 1856 and the had issue. He died
10.11.1884 at Melbourne and Selina died 19.11.1902.
3 Jane Crozier Magee only daughter was married from Bellevue Dundrum, the home of
her father to Francis Clarke MD son of Richard Clarke of Sydney Ave on 11.04.1860 at
Taney Church. Jane died 3 May 1907 at Rosenberg, Glenageary.
7 Susanna Magee of Lower Ormond Quay baptised 01.08.1795 at St Mary's.
8 Frances Diana Magee born circa 1799 died at Rosenberg, Silchester Road, Kingstown
on 16 Mar 1890 aged 91 years and was buried at Deansgrange.
9 Rebecca Magee born June 1803 at Sackville Street, 3rd daughter of the late William Snell
Magee married John James Hamilton a widower of Chelsea, London on 04.01.1848 at Stillorgan
Church. Rev Samuel Magee brother of the bride performed the ceremony. John worked for
the Inland Revenue at Somerset House. He was a parish nominator for Booterstown Church
(SS Philip & James) and was also on the committee for the enlargement and improvement of
Booterstown Church. He donated 200 pounds towards the building of a Glebe House. He
died late of Hebert Lodge at Lisdoonvarna on 23 Jul 1872 aged 70. Rebecca died 19 Apr 1887
aged 83 years at Herbert Lodge, Sydney Avenue, Blackrock and was buried at Deansgrange.
10 Mary Magee born circa 1805 youngest daughter married Captain Thomas Paul Williamson late
93rd Highlanders and son of the late Rev Thomas Williamson on 19.04.1842 at Stillorgan
Church. Thomas died on 19.12.1844 at Ventnor, Isle of Wight aged 48 years. Mary, last
surviving child of William Snell Magee died at her residence Rosenberg, Sylchester Road,
Kingstown on 30.10.1893 aged 88 years and was buried at Deansgrange.
Frances Diana Magee, Rebecca Hamilton and Mary Williamson died at Rosenberg as did their niece
Elizabeth Isabella Magee. Elizabeth acted as execator for each of her aunts.
Elizabeth Isabella Magee was born circa 1826 in County Dublin and died a spinster on 10.07.1905 aged
79 years and was buried at Mount Jerome. She left 12K in personal estate and Jane Crozier Clarke was
her executor.
